elevated ns1KF Catholic Cemeteries & Funeral Services – Archdiocese of Toronto (CCFS) is seeking Interns for both of our Funeral Homes, Holy Cross Catholic Funeral Home located in Markham and for Assumption Catholic Funeral Home in Mississauga, devoted to service and providing compassionate care.   

elevated ns1KF With CCFS, our Interns are developed into exceptional funeral professionals that learn the importance of the relationship between the funeral homes and cemetery properties to ensure a cohesive and collegial working environment to allow us to provide superior service to grieving families.  Reporting to the Funeral Home Manager, this position is a 12 month training period aligned with the educational requirements of Humber College and will work closely with a Preceptor and Licenced funeral home staff. 

elevated ns1KF Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Under direct supervision, the Intern will be trained to prepare/embalm decedents, dressing and casketing of human remains, in accordance with the Policy and Procedures outlined by CCFS, and the standards of practice established by the Bereavement Authority of Ontario.
  • Conduct activities such as transfers of the deceased from place of death (residence, nursing homes, hospitals, Coroner’s office, etc.) to our funeral home.
  • Collect and understand the proper paperwork that is necessary to transport, process, embalm, register the death of, and coordinate the final disposition of the deceased.
  • Familiarize with merchandise options, the basics of the sales contracts and the forms that are needed when dealing with the final arrangements and final disposition of the deceased.
  • Witness Pre-Need and At-Need consultations alongside with Funeral Directors and bereaving families to understand the high level of service of family client care.
  • Attend and perform a variety of tasks to assist funeral directors and the Manager to ensure that funeral and cemetery services run effectively. These tasks include:  set up a visitation room, supervise visitations, participate in the church service, experience the coordination necessary to take out the funeral in procession and observe the supervision of the final services and disposition of the deceased.
  • Safely operate funeral vehicles and assist in the coordination of parking lot activity including directing families, assisting with managing parking needs and traffic flow, managing funeral flags, etc.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate and timely client family files as per CCFS policies and procedures.
  • Perform other administrative duties as needed, such as creating memorial tributes for deceased prior to and during funeral services using the various technological applications available.
  • Refer problems and complaints to higher authority as they arise to ensure complete and satisfactory resolution for the client/family.
  • Assist in providing general housekeeping duties including but not limited to: dusting, vacuuming, cleaning washroom, facilities, maintaining family lounge, reception rooms, etc.
  • Work to understand the important relationship between the funeral home and the cemetery property to ensure a cohesive and collegial working environment.
  • Assist in the funeral home’s mission to develop and maintain relationships within the Catholic Community for the purposes of mission fulfillment and market share growth.
  • Maintain an understanding of the Catholic faith as they pertain to funeral and burial practices.

elevated ns1KF Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

  • Currently enrolled in Funeral Services Education Program
  • Previous work experience in a funeral home and/or minimum of 1 year of job-related and customer service experience
  • Committed to provide superior customer service by working effectively, independently and as part of a team
  • Physically able to comfortably lift a minimum of 80 lbs., bend, stoop, reach, etc.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and both verbal and written communication skills
  • Computer literate and ability to learn various software applications
  • Strong organizational skills, ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously and works well under pressure. Exceptional attention to detail and consistently high level of accuracy when performing administrative tasks
  • Understanding of the Catholic faith, beliefs, traditions and practices pertaining to funerals, funeral mass and burials is preferred
  • A valid and clear Ontario Class G Driver’s License
  • A clear Police Clearance Record is a required

  • Shifts range from 8 to 10 hours with rotation, 7 days per week
