It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Gwendoline Louise Cheng aka Chan Shui Wan (Moy Moy) on Monday Dec 22.
She leaves behind her 3 children, Peter (Anna), Harry (Maylynn) and Lelin (Kevin); her 7 grandchildren, Susanna, Jason (Jeremy), Natalie, Kurt (Lucy), Ashley, Emily and Melanie; and her 3 great-grandchildren, Ailey, Raelynn and Jacob.
The family would like to thank the staff at Yee Hong Peter K. Kwok Hospice for their care and compassion during Gwendoline’s final days.
We would also like to express our deepest gratitude to the Home Care team, especially Jennifer and Lorna, for their patience, support and excellent standard of care. Special thanks to Dr. Cheung, Jay, Susan and Crystelle.
In lieu of flowers please consider donating to Yee Hong Peter K. Kwok Hospice

I have been privileged to know Harry’s Mom for about a decade, living in the same house. I’m not sure if she was as privileged to know me, as I was constantly in her kitchen emptying her rice pot and eating all that delicious food she made for her family. Throughout it all, she would always smile when she saw me, and, without fail, ask me, right up onto the last time I had seen her, if I had eaten.
Looking back at the times that she had enlisted me to drive her to Mahjong, for me reluctantly or otherwise, it was a small compensation for the kindness she showed to me and everyone around her. Mrs Cheng, as I had come to call her, was always there to raise up her grandchildren, feed them and look after them, and me.🙂
She included us all regardless of if we were family, friend or fool. She was a loving mother to all of us, and she will be greatly missed.
God bless all of her family that she has left behind, and love to you all.
Hugo Lorraine David and Brian
Dear Hugo, thank you for sharing this lovely memory. She was happiest making sure everyone was fed and cared for, and we’re grateful you felt that love too. Please extend our thanks to Lorraine, David, and Brian as well for your family’s support, your words brought us great comfort.
Mrs. Cheng (as we called her) was the universal grandmother. It didn’t matter who you were or how old you were, if you walked into her house she would offer you food. She always set aside two packages of jung (sticky rice) for my husband because she knew it was his favourite, and I had the privilege of making jung with her one day, learning how to fold the square packets with four bamboo leaves. She was good at mah jong; good enough to treat the entire extended family to dim sum on many Sundays on her winnings. She was kind to me when I lived with her and my sister’s family as a university student, and equally kind to my daughter when she lived with them decades later. The earth has lost a generous, caring soul, and although we were lucky enough to enjoy her company for many years, we wish it could have been longer.
Fei Min, Don, Keita and Kirin
Dear Fei Min, Don, Keita, and Kirin, thank you for sharing these beautiful memories. She truly was generous with her love and food, and it means so much to know how deeply her kindness touched your family across generations. We are truly grateful for your thoughtful remembrance. These shared memories help keep her spirit alive in all of us.
Dear Harry, MayLynn, Natalie and Kurt
Please accept our deep condolences on the passing of your Mom/Grandma. She was always very pleasant and we know she will be missed. She was fortunate to have a long life, so please cherish the many memories and love you made together.
May she rest in peace.
Hi MayLynn and Harry,
Whenever I stayed with you Harry’s Mom was always there, quietly in the background making sure everyone was comfortable. I remember her making lopet ban, our father’s favorite, and sending it with you when you visited Calgary. She was so thoughtful. May she rest in peace.
Dear Auntie Ardis, Dan, Asha, and Dexter, Thank you so much for sharing this, it means more than you know.
Poh Poh really did have a quiet way of taking care of everyone, always making sure people felt at home. And yes, her lopet ban was truly the best, no one will ever make it quite like she did. We’re grateful to know it left others with fond memories.
Dear Ardis, Dan, Asha and Dexter
Family was always important to Harry’s Mom and she was always happy to see you. She loved having her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren gather at Christmas, birthdays and all family events. We will always miss her.
Thank you, Auntie Bev and Uncle Franklin, for your thoughtful and caring message. It truly means so much to us during this difficult time. Our Poh Poh was deeply loved, and we will forever cherish the many memories and love we shared with her.
Dear Bev and Franklin
Thank you so much for your kind words, you and your family have always been good to us, supporting us always.
MayLynn
Big Popo,
You made me laugh when you laughed, you made my kid fall in love with you without speaking a word of the same language. You changed peoples lives, and not just the ones you were there to change. I miss you already, I haven’t told Ellis yet because I’m not totally sure how to. But I know you’re there watching us, I hope for once you’re sitting down and someone else (probably Tsa Gung) is feeding you.
All my love,
Asha
Dear Asha, thank you for this heartfelt message. It captures her spirit so well, her laughter, her quiet way of loving, and the way she touched lives far beyond what she ever realized. We miss her deeply, and we truly appreciate knowing she is remembered with such love.
