elevated DBV9p Obituary
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our wonderful Mom Valentina Palazzo (nee DiGiuseppe) in her 96th year, surrounded by the love of her family. Loving wife of her late husband Michael; cherished mother of Valli (Steve), Lynn (Larry), and Mike (Kim); devoted and caring Nonni of the late Christopher, Stephanie (Justin), Michael (Stefany), Robert, and Olivia; proudest great-grandmother of Sophia, Jaxon, and Brielle. Pre-deceased by her dear parents Francesco and Giulietta (nee Cacchione), and brothers Peter and Nicky. Survived by her loving sister Lidia (the late Nick), and sisters-in-law Anna, Diane, and Mary (the late Gino).  She will be dearly missed by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and many extended family and friends.

elevated DBV9p Born the eldest child in the small village of Fossacesia, Italy, Val grew up working on the family farm. Her education was cut short at Grade 4 as she was needed to help the family at home. As a young teenager, Val and her family lived through the turmoil of World War II.  After the war, her family emigrated from Italy to Canada, where they lived with relatives, and Val faced the formidable task of learning English and adapting to Canadian culture.  She helped to support the family by working as a seamstress at Cooke’s Clothing Co. Within a short time, through a family friend of her aunt, she met her beloved husband, Mike. Together they proudly raised a family of three, where she took on the traditional role of homemaker and loving mother. Family and extended family were an important aspect of their lives, as witnessed by the many parties where Val showcased her talent of making great Italian food (especially pizza!) and her love of music and dancing (especially the tarantella!).

elevated DBV9p Losing her beloved husband when she was 51, she showed great courage and determination in assuming a more independent role, including paying the bills, shovelling snow, and learning to drive at age 56. Over the years, Val made the best of her life, enjoying travelling overseas to places like Jerusalem, Fatima, and Italy. She was an active member of the CWL and the Theresians, and became a Eucharistic Minister at St. Gabriel’s Church where she was a loyal parishioner for almost 60 years. Her deep faith and devotion were the foundation of her great strength. Always taking precedent in her life was family, especially the care and nurturing of her grandchildren and caring for her aging parents.

elevated DBV9p At the age of 86, she happily transitioned to seniors’ living at Amica and later Sunrise, where she enjoyed activities and entertainment, and was crowned “the dancing queen.” At these residences, Val embraced the great care she received, and that she so fittingly earned, after providing the same love and attention to so many others. She constantly demonstrated her deep gratitude to others who cared for her through her trademark “thank you, thank you, thank you” and “God bless you.”

elevated DBV9p Val was the consummate role model of living life with strength, courage, kindness, compassion, positivity and grace. We will greatly miss everything that was our Mom, just as we know she will be missed by so many others.  We take solace from knowing she is now with our Dad and her grandson, her brothers and so many others she missed and loved.

elevated DBV9p The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to the staff at Sunrise of Thornhill, especially Sara, Majda, Temema, Gege, Rosemarie, Wilma, Oscar and the Reminiscent Floor staff; the staff and caregivers from Modern Angels, especially Erika, Klaudette, Jojo and Easel; and her dear friends from the Theresians of Canada, especially Camille and Sarah.

elevated DBV9p In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke FoundationAlzheimer Society of Toronto or a charity of your choice would be appreciated.
