elevated RBRp4 Born in Toronto. August 24, 1929, and lived in Richmond Hill until 10 years old. Betty lived most of her life in North York (Toronto). Beloved mother of 4 children, grandmother of 8, Great grandmother of 10. Betty was a proud Housewife, active in Community Associations.
elevated RBRp4 Columnist for the Mirror newspaper for Don Valley Village and Henry Farm.
elevated RBRp4 She was elected to North York Council, Ward14, December 1972. Betty and Husband Bill were the first husband and wife to serve on North York and Metro Toronto Council’s together. Betty introduced the first motion in Canada to ban smoking in supermarkets and was instrumental in having the DVP extended to Newmarket. She introduced serviced “garden plots” on Hydro corridors
elevated RBRp4 As Chair of the Metro Parks Committee Betty initiated the walking and biking trail program in Metro(Toronto ) valley lands. The Betty Sutherland Trail at Don Mills and Sheppard area was named after her for this accomplishment. Betty retired with her husband in 1985 to their cottage and home in Florida.
elevated RBRp4 She follows husband after Bill who passed away in 1998, shortly after their 50th wedding anniversary.
elevated RBRp4 Betty will be very dearly missed by all.
elevated RBRp4 In memory of Betty the family would appreciate donations made to the Alzheimer Society.
Aunt Betty was a person who made a difference to the lives of so many. During our time teaching in a remote settlement in Northern Ontario, Aunt Betty helped us to plan a visit to Toronto for our First Nations students. Aunt Betty was instrumental in opening many doors to ensure a memorable trip that included a visit to the office of the Minister of Education. Aunt Betty knew how to get things done. Our heartfelt condolences to the Sutherland family.
95 years of treasured memories together too many to list. Your loving sister Eileen

Aunt Betty was such a community minded person. She wrote newsy little articles for the local newspaper, including coverage of Bob’s and my small wedding nearly 55 years ago! We visited with her in Florida a number of years ago and she was gracious and welcoming as always. I’m glad she is at peace after a long journey.
Aunt Betty was known widely as a powerful, effective politician, but she always used her influence for the betterment of the community and of individuals.
I experienced this myself when I needed her help to get urgent healthcare.
Aunt Betty was always warm and kind to me.
I join with the rest of the family in grief and in Celebration of Aunt Betty‘s Wonderful full life.♥️
I was fortunate enough to work for Betty during her time as an Alderman on North York Council. A time I have never forgotten. She was an incredible lady.
