elevated Ze5UY Obituary
It is with deeply saddened hearts that we share the news that Steven Lorne Gelz passed away peacefully at his home on May 16th, 2026.
Steven was born March 20th, 1946 in Montreal to the late Thelma and Charles Gelz. He is survived and dearly missed by his beloved wife of 56 years, Marguerite Gelz, his daughter Ava-Marie McBlain, son-in law Quinton McBlain, grandchildren Liam McBlain & Hannah McBlain, his son Lorne Gelz, daughter-in-law Alyson Gelz, grandchildren Emma Gelz, Charles Gelz & James Gelz and his sister-in-law Madeline Ste. Croix.
Steven met his soulmate Marguerite on a blind date at a Valentine’s Day dance in Montreal where they went on to build a beautiful life together, working by day and studying by night. Steven was a teacher in his early years making an impact on everyone he met. After moving to Ontario, Steven was a High School Teacher, later becoming a Vice Principal of an elementary school and ultimately a Principal where he continued to share his love for learning with thousands of students and teachers.
Steven was a loving husband, father and “Grandpa” who found joy in spending time with his family. Grandpa Steve brought endless love and laughter to his family and friends and his jokes, nicknames and memorable expressions will be forever missed.
He was an avid reader, spending each evening with a new book and always shared that reading will set you free.
Steven’s warmth, wisdom and gentle spirit will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
elevated Ze5UY As expressions of sympathy, the Gelz family kindly requests donations be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Steve was one of the kindest individuals I had the priviledge of knowing. Great husband, father, teacher and wonderful human being. Wonderful sense of humour. He will be truly missed. Another Angel to watch over us. Rest in peace.
Teresa, thank you for your kind words.
Hugs, my friend.
Marguerite

Dear Marguerite
Sending condolences to you and the family at this sad time.
We have fond memories of Steve in our younger days as teenagers.
We are grateful to have had brief visits with you and Steve when we re-connected with the “old gang” a few years ago.
The years fly by – loving memories of loved ones live on forever!
Sincerely
Carol & Jack Roche
To the Gelz Family. My deepest condolences. I had not had the pleasure of meeting him and I have heard of so many stories as if I had. May he now be an angel watching over all of us. Rest in Peace.
Still having difficulty grasping the situation. Steve was more than a friend…he was family. We’ve known each other since elementary school. He’s been a constant in our lives it seems forever. Our lives will not be the same without him. Always a smile on his face, always primed for a good laugh, always ready to comfort a friend in need of a boost. We will miss him terribly. The days are long but the years are short. Rest in peace friend.
A friend for over half a century.Smart, well read, great sense of humour.A true renaissance man.
Superb leadership skills led him to organize the creation of a doorway between two teachers’ rooms which involved a sledge hammer and no official forms.
A devoted and loving family man.We are proud to have been considered honorary family members.
We will miss Steve but not as much as he will be missed by his dear Marguerite, his children and grandchildren
To All of you, it’s been many years but you’ve never left my heart. My deepest condolences to all of you. We have cherished memories of Steve .

Steve was a person you could hug and sometimes he would not want to let go. Growing up together in a neighborhood of friends, we developed life long bonds which did not falter over time and distance. Our families grew with children and grandchildren, but we remained as we were, young at heart. We have lost a member of our unique family and he will be missed terribly. For over 60 years, you could hear Steve sing while walking to the city bus stop. He would sing at the top of his lungs “I can’t stop loving you”. And yes, my old friend, we can still hear you singing today.
My deepest condolences to the Gelz family. I had the distinct honour to have been hired by Steve years ago – thank you. Having worked with him for almost 10 years, I can honestly say he was one of the most caring and genuine people one could ever meet. RIP Steve.
Steve was my first principal to a newly hired teacher.I was blessed to begin my career at St. Cornelius, where Steve welcomed me with such kindness. He always had a warm word to share and spoke so lovingly of his family. He was truly one of the best. My sincere condolences to you and your family.

Oh, Marguerite. I am so sorry to hear about Steve’s passing. He was such a nice man. Janet and I send our condolences and love to you and your family.❤️
I still remember Steve carefully organizing our gang on vacation ensuring we were all safe and accounted for. And what fun he
was on the pirate ship (the rum helped). He raised a wonderful
family and really knew how to listen to his children and also
their friends as well. He had a wonderful sense of humour and
had so many long-time friends. My deepest condolences to
Marguerite, Ava, Lorne and all his wonderful grandchildren.

Steve was a huge part of our family since I was born 58 years ago….He and Marguerite always felt like family to me. Steve was my dad, Luigi Armano’s highschool bestie … Now they are joined again up in Heaven …
I always admired and will always remember Steve’s calm demeanor, his sense of humor, his strong leadership and listening abilities, his unwavering support to his family, his dedication and commitment living his healthiest life, and a very strong sense of Love.
On behalf of our family, Irene Armano, his godson Jon, and myself, he will long and bright in our hearts. Sending Love & compassion and courage to carry on to Marguerite, Ava and Lorne, as well as to Quinton, Allison and all the grandkids.
We love you, Lisa

My deepest condolences to you Marguerite and the whole family. I was so very fortunate to have worked with Steve at St. Cornelius School where he was a wonderful mentor to me. I loved his crazy sense of humour, his love of life and his strong devotion to education. He brought smiles to everyone he met.
My thoughts and prayers are with you.
