elevated 1fslw It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of João De Matos on Thursday June 4, 2020 in Maple, Ontario Canada. João lived every day of his 102 years with endless love for his family and a deep devotion to God.

elevated 1fslw He emigrated to Canada from Sao Miguel in 1965.  He was a hard worker with tireless determination and strength, yet he always found a way to bring humour and fun into situations to create special moments out of the ordinary.  He was witty and musical; loved to entertain and captivate the family with his Portuguese raps and ballads. Often with his wife, he would perform and create games that would have people in tears with laughter.

elevated 1fslw Although he had a calm demeanor and an easy-going personality, there was one thing that ignited his spirit: his desire for the Toronto Maple Leafs to one day again, take home the Stanley Cup. 

elevated 1fslw Cherished husband of the late Maria Adelaide De Matos, João was loved by his children, Cecilia (David), Jorge (Maria), Frank (Paola) and Ressurreiçao.

elevated 1fslw He was a doting grandfather to all of his grandchildren; Rosemary (Chris), Nataly (Brian), Cecilia, Nelson, Jenny (late Gino), Carmen (Humberto), Jessica (Anthony), Alexandria (Paul), Christopher (Justyna), Francis, Danielle (Andrew) and Ashley (Michael).

elevated 1fslw Beloved great-grandfather to Megan, Brianna, Felicia, Alexander, Matthew, Justine, Isabella Rose, Aiden, Gabriella, late Adelaide, Isabella Jessica, Alessandra, Sierra, Xavier, Emma, Ava, Chloe, Ella, Felix, Aria, Jake, Emilia and Jayden.

elevated 1fslw Affectionately known as Papa Jo, at the Maple Health Centre where he volunteered for a number of years before making it his final home. A special thanks to all the staff for their compassionate care of him over the years. We are sincerely grateful to all the employees and volunteers.  They have done an outstanding job in providing quality care, since the beginning of his journey there. The health and safety of the residents and staff was undeniable, especially during this pandemic. From the bottom of our hearts, we thank you.
