Joao (John) Leonardo Rebelo Pereira

elevated af8oP It is with profound sadness that the family announces the passing of Joao Leonardo Rebelo Pereira (also known affectionately as John), who passed away peacefully on Monday, December 15, 2025, at his home in Thornhill, Ontario, at the age of 79.

elevated af8oP Joao is survived by his beloved wife of 54 years, Maria Fatima Pereira. He was the loving and cherished father of Lucy (Jay), Veronica (Steve), and Moses, and the proud and doting grandfather of Tristan (Danna), Ethan, and Chloe. His immense love for his wife, children, and especially his grandchildren, who were his biggest joys, was the cornerstone of his life.

elevated af8oP Joao was a man of extraordinary strength and resilience, who fought many illnesses with courage and grace. The family wishes to acknowledge and thank the compassionate care teams at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, St. John’s Rehabilitation, Princess Margaret Hospital, Toronto General Hospital, Southlake Regional Health Centre, and Mackenzie Health for their dedicated support and exceptional care throughout the years.

elevated af8oP Joao was born on April 11, 1946, in Pico da Pedra, Sao Miguel, Azores. He was the third child of the late Henrique Pereira and late Maria da Conceicao Pereira. He was the loving brother of Olga, the late Indorinha, the late Valdemira and the late Mario.   

elevated af8oP In 1972, he bravely immigrated to Canada, where he built a beautiful life for his family. He dedicated his professional life to the construction field, eventually working as a skilled crane operator.

elevated af8oP A man of immense social warmth and endless energy, Joao had an infectious zest for life and was known by all who met him as the biggest prankster with a talent for telling a great joke. He cultivated a wide circle of friends at Musselman’s Lake, within his local community, and through the various groups he was affiliated with.

elevated af8oP Joao’s passions were as vibrant as his personality. He found peace in his garden, meticulously caring for his plants and trees, and took great pride in his craft of woodworking. He also spent many joyful hours pursuing his unique hobby and love of breeding birds.

elevated af8oP He will be dearly missed by his many nieces, nephews, and cousins spanning Bermuda, the U.S., Portugal, and Canada.

elevated af8oP He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, hard work, and unconditional love that will continue to inspire his family and his many friends. He will be deeply missed and always loved and remembered.
