elevated qnS9F Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Maria da Gloria Rodrigues Fidalgo on August 24, 2025, at Humber River Hospital. Gloria was 87 years old. She is survived by her husband Manuel, four children Silverio (Olivia), Natalie (Scott), Gloria (Miguel), John (Sandra), seven grandchildren, Damian, Celia, Mathew, Shannon, Lucas, James and Dylan, two great-grandchildren, Isabella and Austin (and a baby boy on the way), sister Gilda and brother Adelino.

elevated qnS9F Born in Arrifes, São Miguel, Azores, Portugal Gloria was the sixth of eighth children of Miguel and Maria José Rodrigues. She obtained a third-grade education and began working, first domestically then outside the home. She met her husband Manuel when she was 14 years old while on a family trip to the seashore. They dated for nine years and were married on January 28, 1962. In January of 1967, Manuel immigrated to Bermuda, Gloria became mother and father to her then 3 children. She was very devoted to her faith and made sure her children attended Mass regularly and received the Sacraments. In 1972 Manuel returned to São Miguel. In 1974, with then four children, the family immigrated to Canada. Adjusting to life in her new country was hard. She had to work outside the home to help support her family.

elevated qnS9F Gloria loved to socialize and was an active member of Portuguese community at St. Joseph’s Church on Leslie St. She sang in the choir and was a member of the organizing committee for festivals.
She then became a member of Casa Açores do Ontario where she attended weekly social gatherings. Gloria was an avid and very serious card player. Her main pastime especially later in life was playing ‘sueca’ (Portuguese card game).

elevated qnS9F Gloria struggled with asthma all her life and later on it was diabetes. In 2014 Gloria had triple by-pass heart surgery. She recovered from surgery and returned home. In 2021 her health took another turn for the worse as her kidneys failed. She then had to undergo dialysis.
In 2023, due to her husband’s declining health, Gloria and Manuel moved into a retirement facility. It was there that her health improved, and she stopped the dialysis treatments.
Gloria adjusted well to the new home and continued her card playing with Manuel everyday after lunch.

elevated qnS9F Many thanks to all the staff at Four Elms Retirement Home for the wonderful care provided for Gloria.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the organizations of Gloria’s ailments: Heart and Stroke Foundation; The Kidney Foundation of Canada; & Diabetes Canada.
