elevated e820S Noel Philip Martin
elevated e820S 1936- 2025
elevated e820S Loved beyond words.
Missed beyond measure.
elevated e820S Noel was born in Dublin, Republic of Ireland and raised in Woodfield House, County Roscommon, Ireland . He was the first born of Annie and Michael Martin. Devoted brother to Kilian, Fred and Aidan with whom he shared a storied childhood and lasting friendship into adulthood .
elevated e820S He was beloved husband of Joan Daly Martin for 46 years and cherished Dad to his son, Timothy Michael ( Candice Bairstow). Noel was more than delighted to be Grandad to Liam Aaron Martin.
elevated e820S At his core Noel was both consummate Irishman and proud Canadian. He lived a brilliant life as a scholar, Spiritan priest, Catholic Educator, Husband, Dad, Granddad, Brother, Uncle, friend and colleague.
elevated e820S Noel’s eloquent life was wired for success. His professional accomplishments and awards marked his exemplary commitment to Catholic Education in the Province of Ontario for over 40 years. His professional credibility was evidenced as a TCDSB Secondary School Teacher, Department Head, Vice Principal, Athletic Director, Band Conductor, Principal, Superintendent of Education, and Director of Education. Well past official retirement, Noel continued to serve the Catholic Education community at Ontario Catholic School Trustees Association, as Director of Catholic Education. He was professionally motivated by the values and goals of an education system rooted in faith and grounded in Gospel values.
elevated e820S Noel loved everything Irish: history, poetry, Gaelic Football (GAA) Rugby, music, and a pint of Guinness shared with his son! Throughout his life, Noel carried within him verses upon verses of memorized poetry, in English, Irish and Latin. There were always lines of Shakespeare and his beloved WB Yeats to aptly fit any situation, celebration or bureaucratic annoyance. Poetry and music gave him peace and inspiration and connected him to “Home” in times of struggle.
elevated e820S Everything culinary made Noel very happy. He proudly claimed a serious case of topophilia, whenever he found himself in the meat department, at the fresh seafood counter or the produce aisles of Fortino’s. He derived equal joy from both food preparation and consumption! Family and friends gathered at our table often heard his nearly prayerful mantra: “No prize for finishing first!”
elevated e820S Our lives are nourished because he lived and loved us. Now, he is free, in the words of W.B Yeats, to “… arise and go now, and go to Inisfree…”
elevated e820S Cremation and private family interment have taken place. In lieu of flowers memorial donations, in Noel’s name, the Angel Foundation for Learning Student Nutrition Program-http://angelfoundationforlearning.org, at the Toronto Catholic District School Board, would be gratefully appreciated. Condolences and memories may be left at www.catholic-cemeteries.com.
elevated e820S Gratitude goes to those staff who, despite a broken Long Term Care system, compassionately cared for Noel as best they could during his illness. They were frequently stressed and stretched while trying to provide care within a bureaucratic culture, which too often lost sight of the person, in favour of policies, procedures and regulations. To those who supported us, a heartfelt “Thank you”.

Mr. Martin was our incredible principal at Don Bosco and later was instrumental in helping me start my career in teaching. He was a larger than life presence, and we always knew order would be followed in the school, yet he was loved by everyone. His booming voice could be heard from one end of school to the other. Oh, he was such a great man! Part of my wonderful memories of high school. Thank you, Mr. Martin, for being such a great influence on so many lives!
Cathy,
Thank you for sharing your beautiful memories.

He was a good man and May his memory be eternal.
Laryssa,
Thank you for your kind message of condolence. That you remember Noel with such respect, from the Don Bosco days is a beautiful tribute!
The BEST memories of 5 years of Latin in Mr. Martin’s class. Whether teaching, grading, or listening to us, his wit and sense of humour always left us smiling. He didn’t shy away from talking to us about any non academic concerns we brought up. He was private about his personal life but his joy at the birth of his son was shared, as were a couple of pictures. Condolences to his wife, son Timothy, and the rest of his family. So glad he experienced the joy of being a grandfather. A Good man.
Maria,

Sorry for your loss. This makes me sad. I was a student at Don Bosco 1984 to 1989. Mr. Martin was a great guy. He cut me so many breaks and I was a handful. As I grew older I appreciated him for his discipline and empathy. Sending peace to everyone.
Paul,
Mr Martin would love your beautiful message of condolence! Thank you.
Mr. Noel Martin was my principal and Latin teacher, but above that he was an amazing human being. He always treated us like his own with guidance, support and understanding. His sense of humour combined with his big booming voice gained him a special place in the hearts of the Bosco students. I have so much respect for him as he really was one of my favourite people and a huge influence in my high school years. My condolences to Joan, Timothy and the whole family. He truly did leave a legacy on all of us whose lives he touched. Rest in peace Sir.

May Noel’s gentle soul, rest in peace.
My sincere condolences to you Joan, Timothy, Candice and Liam.
A gentle soul he was.
Thank you, Caitlin
Mr. Martin, was a larger than life man, he was a gentle giant. Firm, yet fair. His strong voice, when yelling Mr. Colak instilled fear in me as a youth. But, of the many times summoned to his office, trembling in fear. He always talked to me with compassion and kindness. He understood the challenges of youth and rebellion and always had words of wisdom. I always left his office smiling. God Bless the family in these turbulent times. Will never forget the legend Mr. Martin.
Thank you, Bosy for your beautiful amd delightful message of condolence. Your memory with definitely make your Proncipal smile!
God Bless Joan, just want to clarify it was Tony Ante Colak, student at Don Bosco from around 1985 to 1989 not Bosy Colak. Condolences
Thanks Tony for the clarification…. Grateful for your kind condolence …. Time for me to pull out the Bosco Year Books!
Joan
Joan – Noel played such an important part of my youth. Not only did he perform my First Communion in the beauty of our 70s living room, but also was the first person I knew who slept to noon on weekends. (It was during his days teaching at the high school, so I’m sure he needed all the rest he could get. But either way, I thought it was just another way he was a cool adult.)
He is missed and will be remembered for his kindness and wit.
So much love to you and Timothy. Speak soon. Xx
Thank you, Julie for your loving message of condolence and for the delightful memories!
“The grief of our loss may be with us for a long time, but the joy of our memories will stay forever.”

Dear Tony,

To Joan and family
Thinking of you and wishing you moments of peace and comfort as you remember, celebrate and thank God for the great life lived by Noel and his many wonderful and meaningful contributions towards the betterment of society and in a particular and significant way Catholic Education.
We are often told that only that which we have wrought into our character in life can we take away with us in death. Good character represented by good people like Noelis human nature in its best form and what God created us all to be; authentic, reliable, caring, giving, loving, hospitable and faithful. Noel was all of these and more and carried out with determination and meaningful what he felt called to do in life. Like St. Paul he can surely say. I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race. I have kept the faith. We may all say “ Well done good and faithful servant “.
May Noel rest in eternal peace and his memory a blessing.
Tom O’Leary, Markham, On.
Dear Tom,

Joan and Timothy
I was happy whenever Noel addressed us at a staff meeting at Fr. Henry Carr. He was very down to earth, but never failed to inspire me with his sense of humour and his commitment to the Catholic education system. Despite the tediousness of school bureaucracy, he was unfailingly positive. My condolences to you, Joan (also an inspiration!) and to your family. May Noel rest in peace.

Thank you , Monika for your family’s kind words of condolence. The world is less brilliant without Noel.
Joan and Timothy
Dear Joan, my condolences for your loss. I first met Noel shortly after I was hired at Henry Carr in 1987 by his good and long time friend Nick Nolan. It was at a chaplains’ event. I was very impressed that like you, Joan, he was deeply committed to Catholic education, young people and their teachers. Noel had a positive and enthusiastic nature. which radiated and let those he came in contact with feel good about themselves, energized and optimistic about the situation. After his official retirement, Noel helped with a Grade 12 Retreat at Carr. Once again I saw his deep respect for young people and his willingness to listen to them and honour the good in them.. We will pray for Noel, you and your family.
Dear Joan sorry for your loss I knew Noel as father Martin when he taught biology and was our band conductor for Neil McNeil high school He was loved by all and will be sorely missed. Long May your big jib draw an old newfoundland and irish saying . God bless Noel Martin love always john madden

Thank you, John for your kind message of condolence. Noel certainly had the highest regard for chaplaincy in SS. His respect for young people was a hallmark of his professional life.
I was blessed with many wonderful teachers and mentors in my life but none that made me feel more capable than Noel. After all is said and done, isn’t that the quality that most identifies the heart of a true educator? Rest in peace, dear Noel.

My prayers in abundance for you all in these painful times.

To paraphrase his favourite poet, Noel contributed to the “sensual music” of our lives, while also being a “monument of unageing intellect.” Most grateful for each and every splendid interaction I had with him.

Joan and Timothy
To the Martin Family. I met Father Martin as a young “niner” in the fall of 1966. Noel Martin formed a huge part of my wonderful years at Neil McNeil. He demonstrated how to be a good human being with compassion. I recall fondly how he would talk to us youngsters, treating us as young men, showing us how to be the best person we could be. I have for many years, and until my last days remember this beautiful man! God Bless you Father Martin.
My deepest sympathies to you Joan and your family. Noel was the model of what it meant to be Catholic, someone who inspired faith, hope and promise for all who he encountered. He lived with humour and an undeniable Irish charm that warmed all hearts. I miss him, he will always be in my heart and prayers.
Thank you, Frank for your kind message of condolences. I have no doubt that Noel will remain in your heart.
Joan and Timothy
Gina and I were very saddened to hear of Noel’s death. We have fond memories of a relationship that has spanned over forty years.
We remember a man who was disarmingly humble, a man who shared his gifts willingly with students, colleagues and friends, a man whose greatest pride and deepest love was reserved for his wife Joan and son Timothy.
We hope and pray that his passing allows time for healing the sense of loss that is inevitable, but also a time to honour and cherish the memories of love and friendship that Noel exuded so naturally. He was a gifted man who will be remembered fondly by all who had the privilege to know him.
Dear Mike and Gina,
Thank you for your heartfelt message of condolence. Timothy and
I are grateful for your tribute to Noel… a humble man… a loving man…a friend.

Dear Joan and family. My condolences on your loss.
I was just sharing memories of him
This past weekend about my experiences with him
As a teacher at Neil McNeil. He was a no nonsense person , strict but fair.It is a loss for all. Of us.
I remember him fondly.
I recall him
In the auditorium, he stood at the front to address the student body, he placed the microphone to one side and his strong voice carried to the back
Row. No one would think of getting out of line.
Rest in peace
Jean-Paul,
Thank you for your fondly felt, memory-filled message of condolence! That Noel Martin booming voice…. has obviously stayed with you for a very long time!
Joan and Timothy
I always felt inspired to teach within the Catholic system every time Noel dropped by to speak to the staff at Henry Carr. His generous and gregarious nature was always an inspiration. He was unfailingly optimistic even when times were less bright! Salve Magister!
Deepest regards to you, Joan, your son Timothy and his family- when comes such another!
Dear Anne,
Thank you for your kind message of condolence. Noel’s optimism was a constant throughout his professional life, even in those not so bright days!
Joan and Timothy
Dear Joan,
Saddened by Noel’s passing, grateful to have been touched by his wisdom, his love for Catholic education, and his deep care for those journeying in common mission.
Noel’s words inspired me each time. I recall fondly the first time I heard Noel, when he was addressing a room full of vulnerable, doubting new teachers. He reminded us that “the Lord does not call the qualified, He qualifies the called”. Profound insight that encouraged and inspired hope. This is now a reminder I often share each time I am mentoring new teachers or administrators.
The Lord has now called home His faithful servant. Noel will be greatly missed, but his legacy continues.
May he rest in peace
Thank you Michael for your kind words of condolence. Keep sharing that Noel Martin wisdom!
Joan and Timothy

Your Bosco profile of Noel is so consistent with his entire professional life. Thank you for your kind words of condolence.

Joan and Timothy
Noel’s inspired leadership provided vital learning opportunities for disadvantaged Irish youth from both traditions through the Irish Youth Reconciliation Project. His partnership with Sister Joan Bowles in the Wider Horizon Programme improved the lives of so many. Bless you, Noel.
Dear Mary,
Thank you for your kind message of condolence. Wider Horizons was certainly a high point in Noel’s leadership ( and yours).
Joan and Timothy
To Joan and family,
My deepest condolences to you all at the passing of Noel. What I remember best was his sense of presence and humour. He could fill a room, but not dominate it. He was also tremendously generous (as are you Joan) in being available to lead staff Faith Days, and make them occasions to look forward to, as well as gently evaluating Religion AQ teachers. I loved his practice of having a mid-Faith Day Catholic Trivia contest among teachers, tossing chocolate bars as prizes to those with the right answers.
He will be missed.
Best wishes.
Patrick McConvey
Dear Patrick,
Thank you for your kind message of condolence. Your memories are a tribute to Noel’s remarkable leadership….chocolate bars included!
Joan and Timothy
Dear Joan,
My condolences go out to you and Timothy. Being part of the 1st graduating class of Don Bosco, I had the fortune to have “Mr. Martin” as my Latin teacher, science teacher and mentor. He taught with conviction & great skills, always understanding the in-classroom and out-of-classroom needs/struggles of all his students. He inspired me to pursue my dream of becoming a teacher and mother. When I met him at a school board function years after graduating, he spoke to me with the same “twinkle” in his eyes and empathy that he showed me years before. My eyes teared up, when I heard of his passing from my husnand (who discovered the obituary notice in the Toronto Star). He was a great man, a true icon, a listener, a wise advisor and a true “educator”, through his own example, of how to live a fulfilling life. I will truly miss him. He was a saint for me.
Martina,
Thank you for your kind messages of condolence.
They are a beautiful tribute to Noel. I hope your memories continue to provide comfort to you.

Deepest sympathy to the family, so sorry for your loss. Noel was so caring and supportive . As an educator working for the TCDSB , I had the honour of getting to know Noel very early in my career. I always looked forward to his school visits , or his guest appearances at many school retreats . His wonderful sense of humour , as he always provided us with many of his jokes, to keep the laughter flowing. We also shared the love of sports, Noel supportive me over many years as I travelled internationally competing for Triathlon Canada ,at times during the school year. I am forever grateful and thankful for his support. Rest in Peace Noel, memories live on forever. 🙏
Linda
Thank you for your kind words of condolence. I do remember Noel’s support of your international triathlon experience. At his core, Noel was an athlete!
Joan, my deepest condolences. I was blessed to have known Noel, first at Don Bosco and later, through his interactions with the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board.
Through his leadership roles in Catholic Education, Noel was a mentor to many choosing the teaching vocation.
My thoughts and prayers are with you and Timothy.
Thank you, Alex for your kind expression of condolence and tribute to Noel. I know that he was very proud of your leadership achievements.

Dearest Joan, Timothy and family,
So very sorry to hear of Noel’s passing.
Noel was a wonderful man, deeply proud of his Irish heritage. I will always remember his kind and friendly disposition, and his generosity in sharing his love for Ireland’s history and literature. I feel truly fortunate to have known him and to have shared an unforgettable car journey to his beloved county, learning so much from him along the way. We are holding you all in our hearts, feeling close to you despite the distance, and wishing we could be nearer to offer our support. Please know that we are thinking of you with love and deepest sympathy.
Susana, Dermot, Oisin and Fionn,

Joan’ and Timothy
Dear Joan,
Please accept my deepest sympathy for your loss. Having met Noel on several occasions, I was able to easily connect the dots from when you would speak about him as you taught us at OISE-GTA Catholic to the big smile and sparkle that would come across your face! The love between you two was equal parts inspirational and aspirational.
Thank you for sharing your giant of a husband with us. What a blessing!
May the Lord hold you extra close at this very difficult time and may your pain be eased by the messages of love from those of us who knew Noel and were lucky enough to see you two in action together!!!
Dear Christy,
Thank you for your kind message of condolence for my “ giant of a husband… father, grandad and Catholic Educator! Your words are comforting.
As a fight spilled over into the hall way after a Neil McNeil hockey game things got more testy the next morning for three of us hockey players awaiting a discipline hearing with Father Geary. Our council was Noel Martin. with a proud fathers look in his eye he called us a bunch of Idiots !!! Then padded al of us on the back as we went in to the office. Result was a 15 minute after school detention for us all. 30 years later Noel remembered and said I was proud of you guys. Noel we were proud to have you . Rest in peace my friend.
Noel was obviously very proud of you guys, Dan. How beautiful that you remember that. Thank you for your kind and delightful condolence. It brought us joy. We are comforted.
Joan and Timothy

Terry and Gerry Blake
Dear Terry and Gerry,
Thank you for your kind words of condolence. The Secondary Schools Department and the good people with whom Noel worked, definitely held a special place in his heart!
Joan and Timothy
Both Mary Lou and I wish to send our prayerful thoughts to you, Joan, and to your family, as you grieve the loss of your beloved Noel. Mary Lou and I both spent many years teaching and doing Chaplaincy in TCDSB schools, and we encountered Noel many times, wearing one or the other of his official hats. Regardless of which hat he was wearing, even the hat of leadership, he was never someone who was “above” or “separate from” the rest, but always a unifying and inspirational presence. He was a “good man”, in the fullest sense of that term. He always demonstrated great intelligence, and good humour, and compassion, and many other admirable traits that could be added to this list. We will always remember him warmly. It is said that “love never dies”, and so may you and your family continue to abide and to grow in the love that Noel lived with you and left with you.
We have known Noel as a neighbour and friend for over 35 years. We have enjoyed many conversations with him and admired his knowledge and wit on a variety of topics We have cherished his company in many social settings where his inciteful comments on many matters added to the many diverse conversations. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
Dear Brian and Mary Lou,
Thank you for your kind words of condolence and for your generous tribute to Noel as a person and as a leader. As you affirm, he was one and same good man!
Joan and Timothy
Dear John and Carolyn
Thank you for your kind and neighbourly message of condolence. Noel, on so many occasions expressed his gratitude for such wonderful neighbours!
How pleased he would be to know how thoughtful you have been to me!
Joan and Timothy
Dear Joan and Timothy
I was so sorry to learn of Noel’s passing, and wanted to offer my sincere condolences.
For so many of us who have shared in the work of Catholic education, Noel was a friend, a mentor, and an outstanding model of what could aspire to be on our very best days. With genuine humility and an unfailing decency, he brought quiet strength and unshakable resolve that made all those around him better and stronger for his presence. He was always whole-heartedly committed to doing right by those around him — students, colleagues, friends, family alike –and in those rare moments when his usually unfailing sense of humour did fail him, he could channel that acerbic wit and keen mind of his in a way made him a formidable and highly effective advocate for justice. While always unassuming, he had a special knack for making common sense prevail in the face of bureaucratic process simply by the force of personality — always gentle in manner but fierce in conviction.
Those of us who were privileged to work with him learned from him, and were inspired by him, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have known him. What he gave so generously of himself to his vocation almost certainly came sometimes at the cost of time that might otherwise have been given over to family, and to his own well being. Thank you for sharing your husband and father so generously with us over the years, and please know that we treasured him. His life was a gift to all of us.
I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.
Dear Mike,
Thank you for your kind message of condolence and your generous tribute to Noel. You beautifully highlighted the professional profile of your your friend and mentor…. an advocate for justice.
Pam and I were so saddened to hear of Noel”s passing. Noel served many roles in education and in each one his trademark humour, wisdom and kindness were his trademark. He spoke with strength and firmness, and always with compassion. Our condolences to you, Joan and Timothy. Don and Pam Walker
Thank you Pam and Don for your kind message of condolence. Noel’s leadership in Catholic was consistently band credibly motivated by compassion!!
Joan and Timothy
Dear Joan and Tim: We extend our deepest sympathy on the loss of Noel. We just heard today and know that this has been a long and difficult journey. We remember Noel as a man of deep intelligence, wit, wisdom and spirituality. He was dedicated to and proud of his family. Noel enjoyed telling stories about “the holy land” of Ireland. His contributions to publicly funded Catholic education are immeasurable. John fondly remembers Noel leading teacher retreats where he dutifully reminded everyone to silence their “dinging digital devices.” Colette treasures his contributions to the d’Youville RCIA. Noel loved his Church enough to provide insightful, sometimes biting, but always deserved critique. Noel supported the leadership of others. He always encouraged Colette as a pioneer in parish ministry. Noel was a friend to us and we cherish having known him. God has embraced him and we know he awaits us all in the fullness of God’s reign. May Noel rest in peace.
Thank you Colette and John for your kind message of condolence. We love your anecdotal memories of a remarkable man of faith.
Joan and Timothy
Dear Joan, I’ve missed Noel’s conducting our St. Marguerite d’Youville choir for some time now. Our parish was lucky to have Noel share his gift of music with us all every Sunday for many years. With all his tributes as an educator I can confirm that he often wore his Vice-Principal hat when leading our choir. From time to time, he would turn away from the choir towards a wall and begin talking to the wall saying: “Hello … Wall”. Yes, we were like high-school students sometimes. Always a teacher and we were blessed for it.
One hymn comes to mind that he would often conduct: “Dona Nobis Pacem”. I am certain that our Maestro is at peace.
Dear Jade,
Thank you for your kind message of condolence and poignant memory of the 10:30 Choir years. I can hear the “Hello wall” entreaties!
Joan
Dear Joan and Tim
I spent one memorable summer with Noel and the late Wayne O’Reilly teaching summer school in Ireland. In the evenings we would have a pint at the local pub discussing life and literature. Wayne would watch his golf while Noel his Gaelic football and hurling. Always, always, Noel held court with his love of all things Irish- his wit, historical perspective, poetic recitations and general good company were an inspiration to all.
He was a gift to his students, colleagues and family- a true man for others. R.I.P. Noel
, family .
Thank you, Joe for your kind words of condolence. Noel loved those summer assignments in the “holy land”… as he preferred to call it. The pint in the pub with good colleagues was a bonus!
Sending my deepest love and sympathy to Joan, my beloved friend of 60 years and to dear Timothy, Candice and Liam.
Michael joins me in sending heartfelt condolences.
A quote from Lewis Carrol, (author- Alice in Wonderland)
speaks to that gratitude I have for Noel
“The secret to living is to surround yourself with people who make your heart smile”
Although heartbroken that Noel has died, when I think of Noel , my heart continues to smile.
He brought such light and joy to life- through the warmth of his personality, his respect for people, his deep faith, bright intellect and love of poetry, music, and singing.
His humor, keen wit and playfulness lit up a room.
Noel and I had a special gift of relating through”Irish Bantering”. And laughter was multiplied when Noel and Dennis Jarry were together.
And of course his greatest gifs were his beloved wife, Joan and son , Timothy. How blessed I have been to have so many years of friendship and to experience their beautiful hospitality
The family grew and Noel and Joan warmly and lovingly welcomed Candice into their clan. And their darling , grandson
Liam has brought such joy
I close with words of the Irish poet John O’Donahue
“When you stand before beauty, your heart is enlarged”
Thank you, Noel
My heart smiles and my life has been enriched and enlarged
by your loving, beautiful presence
💚🍀Barbara
Dear Barbara,
Thank you for your beautiful tribute to your friend Noel. That lovely playful banter that you shared was a hallmark of your friendship and often found it’s way into the exchange of silly birthday cards over the years . I can still hear Noel impatiently trying to teach you some Irish phrases out on our patio! Those tutorials often ended in peals of laughter!
May we continue to allow Noel’s life enlarge us toward greater loving and laughing!
Joan and Timothy
Noel Martin was a name I remember hearing at the dinner table as a child. My parents, who both crossed professional paths with him, held him in the highest regard. When my mother passed away in 1988, Noel graciously delivered one of the eulogies at her funeral. My father still recalls how deeply touched he was when Noel, then my mother’s area superintendent, asked if he might speak in honour of his young vice principal. Years later, he was serving as director when I was hired by the board. I remember feeling profoundly inspired when he addressed us as a group of new teachers during Religion Part 1 at the CEC, wholeheartedly welcoming us into his flock. May he rest in peace.
Dear Susan,
Thank you for your kind and thoughtful message of condolence. I am comforted that Noel’s memory is threaded through your family from your childhood dinner table to your own Mother’s death and to your own professional life as a Catholic Teacher. It is a beautiful tribute to Noel and to the breadth of his influence.
Joan and Family.

Joan and Tim
Cormac and I were saddened when we realized that Noel had passed away. When we would visit the home we literally always just missed you. We would sometimes see Noel in the dining area and Cormac would go up to him and speak Irish. That was a couple of times. We felt he really did understand. I hope that brings comfort to you and Timothy. Joan and Timothy please know that our thoughts and Prayers are with you. In case you are wondering who this is it is Catherine (Cathy) and Cormac. Joan Rivard’s (Room beside Noel) Niece and Nephew (in law). We hope that we can somehow keep in touch with you.
With love and sympathy
Catherine & Cormac
Dear Catherine and Cormac
Heartfelt thanks for your message of condolence. I am very grateful for the thoughtful connections made with Noel through the Irish language….i am certain he understood . I am sure it comforted him. It comforts me!
Dear Joan:
I just learned of the passing of your dear husband, Noel, whom I came to know in his leadership role as choir director in my former parish. He was a most delightful and thoughtful man, and a fellow Irishman!
I know much time has passed, but his memory brings a great smile to me, and reminds me of his passionate love of everything Irish and his devotion to music ministry.
When my dad died, I spoke at his funeral about his favourite Irish song, “Shall my Soul Pass through Old Ireland?” – a sort of wish that the deceased soul gently passed over Ireland as part of their journey to heaven. For some reason, it comes back to mind when I think of Noel.
You and Noel were very much partners in life and love and I wish to extend my prayers to you as well. May that love sustain you.
I shall offer a Mass for Noel, and with prayers also for you.
(Msgr.) Pat O’Dea
St. Edward the Confessor Parish

Joan and Family
Dear Joan and Timothy
My earlier message seems to have gone missing. Please excuse my condolences being so delayed.
It was such an honour to have Noel as my Choir Director.
I remember that when our practices got off the track he would hand out “red cards”. He had a quick wit and often had us laugh.
Heaven has gained a very special angel.
Laura Lalonde
Dear Laura,
Thank you for your lovely message of condolence. It brought me joy!
The “ red cards” are a delightful memory of the wonderful 10:30 Choir and at the same time a tribute to Noel’s committment to excellence when it comes to music for Liturgy!
I learned of Mr. Martin’s passing only this morning – some of my happiest memories of attending Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts (class of 2007) were meeting up with him at the Catholic Education Centre, where I had many classes. He was a tremendous human being. My sincerest condolences.
Rebecca,
Thank you for the thoughtful expression of condolence. It is comforting to know that Noel is part of your collection of happy CCAA memories.
Joan
Dear Joan: I learned of Noel’s passing at Mass this week. Most of what I would say to you about Noel has been said by so many others on this page: his leadership, his intelligence, his faith. But what I remember most was his humour. Regardless of his position up to Director, he never lost his humility, his “common touch”, his hearty and sincere laughter. He was a giant of a man – remarkable and unforgettable. You and he made an inspirational team. Julie and I send our sincere condolences.
Thank you John and Julie
Your message of condolence and delightful memory of Noel brings comfort.
