Obituary
After dealing with a mild form of dementia, Sophie Heringer nee Schuster, passed away suddenly on January 24, 2025 in her 96th year. She was the last surviving of ten siblings and the only one who came to Canada to make a new home. She immersed herself in the Canadian culture immediately but always kept her Austrian roots close to her heart.
Predeceased by her beloved husband Joseph (Joshi), soulmate of 53 years their daughter Rosemary. She is survived by her two sons Alfred of Huntsville and Brian of Whitby. Loving Oma to Steven, Leslie, Nikki, Shelby, Christopher and great Oma to Madelyn, Charlotte and Lincoln.
Sophie immigrated to Canada from Steiermark, Austria in 1953 and worked at the El Mocambo in Toronto before marrying Joseph in 1955. Her focus in life was dedicated to her family as a wonderful Mom and homemaker. She was a recognized volunteer with the Canadian Cancer Society and participated in the Meals on Wheels program and kept herself busy with various part-time jobs throughout her life including being a partner in a mail order hobby model business.
Joe and Sophie were avid members of the Donau Schwaben Club in Toronto and belonged to the seniors dance group and choir. They loved to entertain and had many parties and get-togethers at their Toronto home and at the beloved cottage on Dickie Lake. There was never a quiet moment, and nobody left hungry or without a smile during those memorable days with family and friends.
Sophie will be forever remembered by her kindness, wonderful cooking, feisty personality and singing. It was a regular occurrence to hear her Yodeling and Singing her favourite Austrian songs at the nursing home where she spent her final seven years.
Special thanks to the staff at Fairview Lodge in Whitby, especially Wayne, Aster and all the staff in the Trafalgar Square Wing who went above and beyond in taking special care of our Mom/Oma.

Sophie was always a gracious and kind lady, who touched the hearts of many. She will be missed.
Mrs. Heringer, as we knew her, always seemed to have food on the go whenever we went to the house. A sweet lady that we respected. My thoughts and prayers go out to her sons, Alf and Brian, and all the family.
My sincere condolences to Alf and Brian and their families. Remember the good times… the memories will always be with you..
