elevated Sbs03 Obituary

A. L. (Al) died peacefully, surrounded by family, in his home in Toronto on September 2, 2025 at age 90. He was born in Monkton, ON August 22, 1935.

elevated Sbs03 He is predeceased by his parents, George and Susan May Flood (nee Dawson) and siblings Clarence, Maurice, Douglas and Ross. He leaves his wife Rolande, children Susan (Mike), Ann (Travis), Lisa (Bob) and Derek (Michelle), grandchildren Lauren (Jeff), Jaclyn, Allyson, Catherine (Sebastian), Madeleine, Danielle, Carolyn (Jonathan), Andrea, Bennett, Sofia, Lucas and Claudia and great-grand-children Lucy and Noah.

elevated Sbs03 Al began his career at CIBC in 1951 and quickly ascended through the ranks. He completed the Program for Management Development at Harvard University in 1973 and was appointed to CIBC’s executive shortly thereafter. He was elected chairman and chief executive officer of CIBC in 1992. He led the bank and its 40,000 employees until his retirement in 1999.

elevated Sbs03 He was also a leader in Canadian business more broadly, serving on the boards of several global companies including Noranda Inc and Talisman Energy. He was a member of the Toronto Metropolitan University (previously Ryerson) board of governors, as well as the board of directors for SickKids Foundation. He served as Campaign Chair for the United Way of Greater Toronto and worked with ShareLife. His leadership and dedication led to his appointment to the Order of Canada in 1999.

elevated Sbs03 Al was a consummate family man, celebrating 65 years of marriage this year with his wife Rolande whom he met while working in Ottawa. He was always the happiest when surrounded by his children, then grandchildren and eventually great-grandchildren who knew him affectionately as GPapa, recounting stories around the dinner table in Muskoka, walking the beach in Naples or narrating “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas”. Al loved the Toronto Blue Jays, often reliving their back to back World Series victories, and was also a die hard and long suffering fan of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

elevated Sbs03 In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations to SickKids, the United Way or ShareLife in his honour.
