elevated hVaXb Obituary
Angela Mary Josephine Coutinho passed away peacefully in the presence of loved ones on January 27, 2026. Born June 26, 1936, Angela was the 7th of 8 children of Cosmas and Conccicao Coutinho. Her childhood, which she often recalled fondly, was spent in Santa Cruz, Mumbai, where she graduated from St. Theresa’s Convent School. Notwithstanding the limited opportunities available to women at the time, Angela always wanted more, and took secretarial courses at St. Sophia’s College. She was among the first in her family to emigrate, moving to Kampala, Uganda to marry her spouse, Francis Alex Coutinho.

elevated hVaXb Angela loved her friends and family with the ferocity of a mother bear or perhaps a dragon.
Mom/Nana is survived by her children, Jude (Meling), Mario (Alice) and Richard; her grandchildren, Shayne, Jenna, Sabrina (Stefan), Jadon, Jalen, Aaliyah and Kiran; and her greatgrandchild, Jaxson, who always brought a twinkle to her eye.

elevated hVaXb Angela faced two particular hardships in her life with resilience and resolve. First, in December 1972, her property confiscated and expelled from her home by the Ugandan dictatorship, she travelled across the world to a ground floor apartment in Flemingdon Park, Toronto with three young boys. She quickly adapted to Canadian life despite her persistent hatred of the cold, ensuring we had a memorable first Christmas, with a makeshift bush, extracted from the front yard, that served as our first Christmas tree. Years later, now established with a job with the federal government, making a home in North York and driving everyday in her beloved Pontiac Ventura, she suddenly lost in 1988 her husband to leukemia shortly after her 25th wedding anniversary and three months after his diagnosis.
Though never the same, she again slowly rebuilt her life with determination, buying a new condominium in Scarborough which continued to serve as a home for many years. Her fierce determination in enduring unexpected hardships, including Alzheimer’s disease in her latter years, will always serve as an example for us.

elevated hVaXb Angela has left an indelible mark, including her strong opinions, art, long telephone conversations, her preference for bread, butter and jam any time of the day, large social gatherings she hosted, Thursday night McDonalds, and her unforgettable cooking skills that produced her famous beef samosas, sorpatel, vindaloo, Goan sausages, bebinca and other Christmas sweets, English breakfasts every weekend, and so much more, all lovingly made.
Angela liked dresses and red lipstick, perfume, nail polish and high heels, wearing these even at the hospital when her husband was dying and where she spent many overnights at his side: when asked why she just didn’t wear more comfortable clothes, she replied, “I do it for your dad.” Though absent in person, Angela will always remain present in our hearts.

elevated hVaXb Appreciating your warm thoughts, prayers and support during this time of deep sorrow, the family has kindly requested that no condolence visits be made.

elevated hVaXb Should you wish, in lieu of flowers, donations in Angela’s honour can be made to a charity of your choice.
