elevated 767Hv Obituary
elevated 767Hv Ann Tengkin was born on August 26, 1943 in Macao where she spent her elementary years, until her family moved to Trinidad in 1954. From there she finished her schooling before joining the Bank of Nova Scotia. Ann met Walter and they married in 1966 in Trinidad. They welcomed their only child Candice in 1971 and immigrated to Toronto, Canada in 1973. After Walter’s passing in 1976 Ann raised Candice as a single mother, before finally relocating to Calgary in 1998, to be with Candice and her family.
elevated 767Hv Ann spent her early childhood playing with her two older brothers, much like a tomboy. By age 10 she took care of others and was her mom’s trusted helper, while her older siblings studied and younger siblings played. She was very grateful and blessed by their love and support throughout the years, especially after being widowed at the young age of 33. She found her strength in the Lord to face any challenge.
elevated 767Hv Ann devoted herself to her daughter, extended family and her grandchildren. She cherished her grandchildren; she was a part of their lives in every way and their biggest cheerleader in all their activities. She never hesitated to find a way to make things fun for those around her; laughter was the best medicine. She loved entertaining her nieces and nephews and eventually her grandchildren. She would take them on outings, tell them her fairytale bedtime stories, host sleepovers, and take them to Blue Jays games, to name a few. She found joy in those precious times spent with family, always prioritizing to spend time with those she loved.
elevated 767Hv Ann was also an avid and talented cook and hostess; she was in her element at social gatherings, taking care of others and making sure they were well fed and having a great time. Ann had a generous and playful heart. She loved going to Chinese operas and attending special events such as attending the parade celebrating the Blue Jays’ World Series wins, or seeing Pope John Paul II’s papal procession in Toronto. Her enthusiasm was infectious for events like these. She loved travelling the world; her 100+ collection of souvenir spoons proudly displayed was a reminder of all the places she had visited.
elevated 767Hv Ann was a also hardworking, astute and loyal employee at Scotiabank for over 30 years. She worked her way up from a branch teller/accounting officer to the Investigations Unit Head office in Toronto and the CAU in Calgary. She made many life-long friends during her career. In her retirement she spent many years volunteering at Wing Kei Chinese Seniors home.
elevated 767Hv Many have been blessed to have known Ann. She could strike up a conversation with people of all ages and walks of life, especially about her favourites topics: sports, politics and world events.
elevated 767Hv Most of all, she was deeply devoted to caring for her family, instilling a caring and welcoming attitude in the loved ones she leaves behind. Ann passed away peacefully in Calgary surrounded by her family.
elevated 767Hv She will be greatly missed by her daughter Candice (Kuen), her grandchildren Alyssa, Kristian and Chantel, her siblings John (Kathy), Paul, Mary (her sister in-law), Alice (Carl), her many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Walter; her parents; her brother, David; and many other beloved family members.

I am deeply saddened to hear of Ann’s passing. She has been my neighbour for the past 6 years and brought such a light to the street and neighbourhood. I loved chatting with her as she would take her afternoon walks. She was always so grateful for any help around her house and yard and often came by smiling with treats and a good story about her grandchildren as a thank you.
My favorite memory of Ann is when she called me up one morning and said “Stefanie I’m taking you for dim sum come pick me up in 10 minutes.” We went to the best dim sum place I’ve ever been and she was like royalty there -everyone working there knew her and exactly what her order was.
Ann will be very missed my me and the other neighbours at 309-311.
May she rest in peace. My thoughts and prayers are with all her family and friends.
My husband Chris and I feel very lucky to have known Ann and to have shared even a small part of her world. She was our neighbour for the past several years and quickly became someone we truly enjoyed spending time with.
Whether it was stories over dim sum, a quiet cup of tea, or a quick visit and tour around her home, time with Ann was always filled with great conversation, laughter, and warmth. She had a generous spirit and a wonderful sense of humour, and it was clear how much she loved and took pride in her family.
We’ll miss her kindness, her stories, and her laugh.
