elevated lnIM5 Obituary

elevated lnIM5 Carmela Civello age 93, passed peacefully in her sleep surrounded by her loving family at Markham-Stouffville hospital on October 31, 2022. Carmela was born in Modica, Sicily the 3rd cherished child of Raffaela and Orazio Agosta.

elevated lnIM5 Carmela was only 14 when she first laid eyes on our dear father Corrado. She told us all that she knew immediately in that moment that he would be the only man in her life. They eloped and were married in 1949 and she gave birth to twins Margherita and Raffaela the following year. In June 1955, the family bravely emigrated to Canada. She gave birth to her first son Orazio in 1958 and her second son Giorgio in 1966.

elevated lnIM5 Carmela was a very intelligent, progressive, and stylish woman. She was very quick to learn a new language and worked hard as a seamstress in her first job in Canada. She was respected by her peers and management quickly promoted her to a shift manager position. She left the factory and went to work as a dietary aid at East General hospital. She again was quickly promoted to a supervisory role which she held for many years.

elevated lnIM5 Carmela was an excellent mother and wife. She was not only the matron of her own family but also the matron for hers and her husband’s extended families. She was often called on to suppress conflicts with others and was respected for her wisdom and abilities as a peacemaker. In her own family, she was the family treasurer, the best chef, and the best friend and advisor to her husband and children.

elevated lnIM5 She loved to nurture and feed her family. She loved to host any celebration and was always over the top in the quantity and quality of the food she would serve. She would plan, prepare, cook and bake every Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving for up to 30 family members.

elevated lnIM5 Carmela loved many things including plants, cats, food, wine, clothes, shoes, sewing, cooking music and singing. She loved people and loved her recently deceased husband Corrado and family above all things.

elevated lnIM5 The family would like to thank all the Palliative Care Drs and nurses at Markham-Stouffville hospital. We would also like to thank the caregivers at Sunrise Senior living. We are extremely grateful to all her home caregivers especially Shereen and Neddie who nurtured and supported her during her 12-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

elevated lnIM5 She is survived by her children: Margherita Arangio (nee Civello), Raffaela Caruso (nee Civello), Orazio Civello, Georgio Civello: Grandchildren Nella, Giuseppe, Carmela, Corrado (Caruso), Laura, Michael, Patrick, Corrado (Civello), Nico. Great Grandchildren: Serena, Olivia, Letizia, Isabella, Oscar, Sammy, Violet, Carlo, Charlie, Mia, Sophie and Teo.
