Shirley was my sister-in-law, my friend, my childrens Aunt. She was a kind, and loving lady. I will always remember meeting her in
Sri Lanka years ago. We had some really fun times and I loved making her laugh. Which we did often. My heart broke when she lost her beloved Bertram. I had many, many heartfelt conversations with her when she moved to Toronto. The love she had for him knew no bounds. I chose to believe they are now
reunited in Heaven. Goodbye my sister, love you always!
Dear Shirley Akka your soul be rest in peace with the lord’s Kindom.
Shirley was my class-mate at Aquinas University College reading for a University of London Degree. We were together in 1963-1964. She sat for the exam an year earlier while I sat the following year. We were close friends and I have even visited her at her home in Demanhandiya, Negombo, where her mother was the post-mistress. Shirley helped me a lot with my tutorials and lent hers to me many a time. I used to visit her at Gampaha Holy Cross Convent where she was boarded while teaching there, and later at Kadawatha after she married Bertram. The last I saw her was in 1972 (she attended my wedding in Jan that year). Later I heard that Bertram had met with a fatal accident, and still a few years later that she had emigrated to Canada. I tried my best to find her through friends in Canada, but failed and then a few days ago one asks me out of the blue whether I knew her – the search was over! I am so sad that I never got to see her in the flesh again. I mourn her demise with her sisters. May she rest in eternal peace!
