elevated NfoZm In Loving Memory of Chen Yoong Tupchong
March 27, 1931 – August 30, 2025
elevated NfoZm Chen Yoong Tupchong, beloved wife of the late David Tupchong, mother of 6 children – Leslie (Mimi), Michael (Maureen), Yvonne (Mel), Sheryll (Alex), Karen (Patrick), Gary (Hilda), grandmother of 14 grandchildren ( Bryan, Alistair, Andrea, Adrian, Keegan, Benita, Jeffrey, Megan, Genevieve, Alisha, Lauren, Sarah, Brandon, Connor), great-grandmother to 7 great-grandchildren (James, Evan, Emily, Audrey, Claire, Alice, Nora) passed away peacefully on August 30, 2025 in Mississauga, Ontario, at the age of 94 years. She was predeceased by David after 76 years of marriage.
elevated NfoZm Born in Guangzhou, China, on March 27, 1931, Chen-Yoong was the eldest of seven children. She faced hardship early in life with the loss of her mother, but was lovingly raised by extended family, including her aunts and grandparents. Despite these challenges, she grew into a resilient, nurturing, and fiercely loyal woman, a character she carried throughout her life.
elevated NfoZm Chen Yoong and David were married on March 17, 1948, when both were quite young. The couple left China amid political upheaval and began their married life in South Africa. There, they built a family and a successful business, navigating the difficulties of the apartheid era. In just over three years, they welcomed three children, followed by three more, forming a vibrant, close-knit family.
elevated NfoZm Chen Yoong and David worked tirelessly to provide their children with the security, education, and opportunities they themselves never had. Despite the difficult journey, they faced life together and were steadfast partners in every sense.
elevated NfoZm In the early 1980s, they made the bold decision to immigrate to Canada, first settling in Vancouver and later moving to Toronto. Retirement brought them the joy of travel and family reunions, and in 1998, they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary surrounded by children and grandchildren.
elevated NfoZm Chen Yoong was a woman of many talents. She was an exceptional cook, able to recreate complex Chinese dishes from memory and distinguish the ingredients of various ethnic dishes just by taste. Her children fondly remember her homemade wontons, chow mein, fish balls, char siu, pastries, and countless other delicacies. Her Sunday roast, in particular, was unmatched.
elevated NfoZm She had a green thumb and took immense pride in her garden, growing tomatoes, squash and other vegetables with apparent ease. As a homemaker, she skillfully sewed, knitted, and crocheted, passing these skills on to her children. She also had a soft spot for animals, tending to various pets over the years, from dogs and cats to budgies and tropical fish.
elevated NfoZm Music was another source of joy for her, and one of her favorite songs was “Que Sera, Sera” (“What will be, will be “), a tune that expressed her optimistic acceptance of life’s uncertainties and her resignation to God’s loving grace, especially during times of hardship.
elevated NfoZm Above all, Chen Yoong took great pride in the accomplishments and successes of her children and grandchildren, providing unwavering support and encouragement in all their endeavors. She had a special rapport with everyone she met but found the greatest joy in her interactions with family and close friends.
elevated NfoZm Her later years were marked by health challenges, including heart disease and the ravages of getting old, which caused a decline in strength and memory. After David’s passing, she never quite recovered from the loss, though she remained fiercely strong and steadfast, traits that had defined her throughout her life.
elevated NfoZm Chen Yoong’s legacy of strength, sacrifice, and boundless love will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.
elevated NfoZm Visitation will be held on Friday September 12, 2025, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Service at 10:30 a.m. at Assumption Catholic Cemetery and Funeral Home, 6933 Tomken Rd, Mississauga, Ontario, L5T 1N4.
