elevated NnBc4 Commonly referred to her friends as Connie and to her family as Mary passed away peacefully at the age of 71 on Monday December 4, 2023, at 11:30 p.m. at Princes Margaret Hospital Palliative care unit on the 16th floor with her loving husband and brother at her bedside. Devoted and loving daughter to her predeceased parents, Giovanni and Genoveffa Gazzaruso. Beloved wife to Tony for over 51 years. Loving and nurturing mother to Joey (Imogen) and Rob (Megan) and families. She was a proud and caring grandmother to her young grandchild Violet whom she cherished and had sleepovers with and did lots of fun things with despite her challenging hard-fought battle with cancer for the last 5 years. Dear sister to Tony Gazzaruso (Josie) who was involved in her journey right from the very beginning and to the very last second.  Loved sister-in-law of Joe (Janet) Vercillo and proud and cherished aunt to many nephews and nieces. Being a loving and caring person in her banking career both in Toronto and Port Elgin afforded her the opportunity, privilege, and joy to gain so many caring lifelong friends.
elevated NnBc4 Special thanks to the nurses and doctors at Princess Margaret hospital throughout her five-year prolonged battle with cancer. Heartfelt thanks to the many families and friends who visited her in palliative care from 17 Nov to 4 Dec 2023 bringing their most appreciated prayers and time spent visiting. She was no doubt aware although she may not have been able to express her love back.
elevated NnBc4 She will be sadly missed by family and friends. She will forever be in our hearts and thoughts. May she find eternal peace for now she is resting with her mom and dad and all those who have been waiting in heaven for her.

Eulogy by Connie’s son, Joey
For the last 42 years of my life my mom has always been my Mumsy. She was my teacher and moral compass, my partner in random adventures, and my biggest influence to laugh, have fun, and live life to the fullest. She brought me up to not stay idle, and always pushed me to try new things.
She also taught me good manners, loyalty, and courtesy. She loved helping others. It didn’t matter who you were or what you did, if you were her son, her husband, her parents, her friend, her son’s friend, or a complete stranger. She’d help you anyway she could, never looking for anything in return.
I have so many great memories of her, and many of those were in the 90s. She would take me my brother and my friends on hikes down mill creek where we’d pack into the old brown dodge charger and park at the Port Elgin dump and then we’d all bushwhack down the river for hours. She’d pack a lunch and we’d have a little campfire by the river too. Those were what we looked forward to most in the summers. She’d bring us on long bike rides on the rail trail to Southampton. And in the late summer on clears nights I remember she’d get us all out in the backyard to watch meteor showers.
She also played ball hockey in the basement with me and my brother after dinner every night. I would play goalie and her and and brother would play one-on-one, first to five goals would win. They’d get pretty intense. My dad played with us one time, but he got a little too into it and ended up taking a spill on the concrete floor and That was the last time he ever played.
I also remember her bringing us on fishing trips around Port Elgin and Southampton, either to the harbour, Mill Creek, or Denny’s dam. And the one time she actually caught a fish, which was a huge steelhead in the port Elgin harbor, she let me and my brother reel it in. She was selfless like that.
After watching Nirvana Unplugged in 1993, my mom’s Yamaha acoustic guitar finally became cool to me, and that was when she taught to me how to play guitar. She taught me the basic chords, and eventually the song “Horse with no name” by America. That was the spark that led me to make music.
A few years later when I was in a band called Good4Nothing in high school she would drive us to our gigs in the minivan. And one time she had to pull us off Less Than Jake’s tour bus to keep us from “the debaucheries” that happen on punk band tour buses.
She also brought me to hundreds of my hockey games and practices growing up, sometimes with my dad sometimes just by herself. Later in my life when I was able to drive myself to games in Jr and Sr hockey, she still came out to watch me, and when I was too old to stay out and party playing Sr A we’d drive to the games together. Those were good times because we just got to shoot the breeze.
For a few years in the early 2010’s we went through a phase of watching episodes of the old 1960s Star Trek and the show Quantum Leap whenever we’d be visiting each other. It was one of those subtle comforting things I loved doing with her. That and playing uno at the dinner table.
So I’m gonna share one last story with you. The last weekend I spent with her we went to Ripley’s aquarium for the day. Afterwards we bought hotdogs for lunch and sat eating them next to the Sky Dome. We were feeding bits of the buns to a group of sparrows for a while too. It must have been a game day because a street busker started setting up his drum kit next to us. My mom struck up a friendly conversation with him for a few minutes, and as we got up to leave, she went to put her pocket change in his basket. As I was walking away, I heard the busker start to play his drums. As I turned to see where my mom was, I didn’t see her to my left or right. And then when I looked back, I saw her dancing in front of the street busker, having the time of her life. She then hustled over to catch up with me and we had a little laugh together, and then she just said, “Well I had to dance!”
It is an understatement to say that Mary will be deeply missed…
Mary was undeniably a caring and genuinely good person whose presence brought warmth and joy to those fortunate enough to know her. Whether through a comforting word, a helping hand, or a warm smile, Mary had a way of making everyone around her feel valued and loved. The many memories we shared with her will forever be cherished and will serve as a testament to the beautiful soul she was. Rest in peace Mary. You will forever hold a special place in our hearts, and may your love and warmth continue to inspire and endure. Love you Cuz!
