Doreen Peterson, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, cousin, and friend, passed away on June 20, 2026, at the age of 78 in Canada.
elevated P5UqV Born in Thangassery, India, on January 14, 1948, Doreen was the beloved daughter of Richmond and Angelina Bartholomuesz. Guided by a natural calling to care for others, she pursued a career in nursingāa profession that reflected her compassionate spirit, unwavering dedication, and selfless heart. She spent many years serving in Dubai, where she touched countless lives with her kindness, patience, and quiet strength. Along the way, Doreen became proficient in seven languages, a remarkable gift that allowed her to communicate effortlessly and build meaningful connections with people from many cultures and walks of life.
elevated P5UqV Above all else, Doreen was devoted to her family. She was the beloved wife of Kilburn, with whom she shared a lifetime of love, partnership, and cherished memories. She was a proud and loving mother to her sons, David and Dean, and warmly welcomed her daughters-in-law, Elaine and Karina, as treasured members of the family. She enjoyed spending time with her three grandchildren, Jessica, Wyatt and Chiara and delighted in their accomplishments. She was also a devoted sister to Irwin, Marie, Duncan, Audrey, Rosebud, Henrietta, and Osmond.
elevated P5UqV She will be remembered for her kindness, her love of animals, and her willingness to help anyone in need. She enjoyed fishing, playing twenty-eight, finding a good bargain, and spending time with family and friends. Her kitchen was the heart of her home, and her table was always open to family, friends, and guests. An exceptional cook with mastery of many cuisines, she found genuine happiness in preparing meals for those she loved. Doreenās cooking brought people together and created lasting memories. Her generosity, hospitality, and the comfort she provided through her food will be remembered by all who were fortunate enough to share a meal with her.

Where do we begin, from the very first time I can recall you were always the one to be out there getting things done when most wondered if it could be done. You always lived and did things out of your comfort zone not just for yourself but for so many of us that you helped unconditionally.
Personally, driving me all by yourself to Abu Dhabi and then to AlAin setting me up when I came to the the Gulf has been etched into my heart. The fun times we shared later with Lesley and Junior on all those wild trips we did followed by the spreads of food that only you could serve have been memories that we are in awe of.
Aunty you will be in our thoughts and prayers forever, till we all meet again in eternity, we love you and may your soul rest in peace.

Doreen made this world a better place by being in this world. Being in her presence always brought joy to my life. I first met her on 14th April 1984. I had just joined Al Zahra hospital, Ajman, UAE as a specialist in O&G and she sought me out. She continued to brighten my life even after I left Al Zahra in 1988. To me, Doreen was like my own sister. Her love and generosity was exceptional. My children were very fond of her. They always talk about her culinary skills. In February 2024 when came to our house in Trivandrum for my motherās funeral. After, she took us to her house in Tangasseri and fed us her delicious food. Doreen, my friend I know you are making heaven a better place with your presence.

Where do I even begin?
Some people come into your life and leave footprints. You, Aunty, left your heart.
You were always unconditional in your love and support. Never any judgement, never any expectations, never any conditionsā¦just love. You were there for every single one of us through life’s highest highs and our lowest lows. No matter what was happening, we knew we could count on you.
You gave me my very first break in life, and for that I will be forever grateful and that is a gift I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
We shared so many memoriesāmost of them wonderfully crazy, completely spontaneous, and full of laughter. You had an incredible knack for finding the most random little shops, the best bargains, the most unusual snacks and those “once-in-a-lifetime deals” that somehow always ended up being absolutely worth the detour. I’d like to think I’ve inherited that talent from you… Every time I wander into some random shop, I smile because I know exactly where I got it from.
Travel was never an issue for you either. A car built for five? Somehow we’d fit maybe eight! Looking back now, I still wonder how managed to get away with all that ā¦ however we enjoyed every minute of it.
Our weekend trips to Sharjah are memories I’ll treasure forever. They were filled with adventure, enough food to feed an army, and flasks of mysterious beverages that I still wonder how we pulled off drinking with a straight face ā¦ you know ā¦ the kind you have when you drink coffee LOL
Somehow everything always tasted better because we were together.
Your hospitality was unmatched. No one could cook quite like you, and no one ever left your home hungry. Your generosity wasn’t something you didā¦it was simply who you were.
And yes… our shared love of mangoes deserves a special mention! We loved every variety… except, of course, the ones from Pakistan! That little joke will always make me laugh, and every mango season will remind me of you.
As I sit here trying to find the right words, I realise there simply aren’t enough. How do you sum up someone who gave so much of themselves to everyone around them? Someone whose love shaped so many lives?
What I do know is this – my life is infinitely better because of your love, your care, your generosity and your unwavering belief in all of us.
Thank you for every hug, every laugh, every adventure, every meal, every shopping expedition, every road trip, every memory and every act of kindness. Thank you for loving us so completely.
You were one of a kind, and the hole you’ve left behind can never be filled. But the love you’ve given us will stay with us forever.
I will miss you more than words can ever say.

Dearest Aunty,
I feel so spoilt and privileged to have had an aunt as special as you.
You were the younger aunt, always full of energy. I never felt you held yourself back from anything. You were adventurous, full of style, and always ready for another trip to the Lebanese shops. You had a wonderful way of making moments feel special, making the ordinary feel extraordinary and even the boring filled with excitement.
You always made us feel special and appreciated. You filled our stomachs with food, and I think we were your willing test subjects for so many of your creations ā all made with genuine love. I remember your varied food creations, some crazily spicy and yet all very tasty. There was never just one dish; there were always many, and always plenty for all.
I’ll always remember the Jungli Pulao, the cockle picking, the road trips ā so many of them ā and the fashion shopping adventures. Then there were your accidents! The camel that “fell over my car”, and another time I think it was a road runner. I always had my doubts though… did you mean you hit these things?
I will always remember you showering us with special and personal gifts. Yes, being in Dubai it meant sometimes Shiny things!
Gillian also has nothing but wonderful memories, especially of how you helped her shop for our engagement and wedding. That meant so much to both of us. She also lovingly remembers your exotic taste in food, which was always ready for us when we visited you. You embraced us with your kindness and love.
You were the one-percenter of aunts. You loved your sons to the moon and backāwe all could see itāyet somehow you always had time for us as well. We were so fortunate to have an aunt like you. Not many people have the privilege of someone making such an impact on their lives, and I know for sure you did your sisters proud by always being there for your nephews and nieces.
Rest in peace, dearest Aunty Doreen. Be reunited with my Mum (Buddu), your loving brother and parents.

āDā for Determined
I would say that of all the qualities Aunty had, I think her most stand-out quality was that she was āDeterminedā.
Aunty Doreen lived life entirely on her own terms. For all of us young girls who grew up watching her, we saw a woman who was strong and courageous.
She knew what she wanted and got it!
She was also quite the āDynamoā!
Always taking initiative, always on the move and always getting things done! I donāt think we ever saw her sleep! She was a no-nonsense personā¦never listened to anyoneās āNoā for an answer . She often got her way and I donāt think anyone got the better of her! Iām sure everyone who knew her would have heard her break into Tamil, Malayalam, Hindi or Arabic to strike a bargain with a shopkeeper and get the best deal!
If I had to choose a vegetable that personified Aunty Doreen, it would be a Chilli! Everyone knew she had a special affinity for chillies-especially the hottest, spiciest and reddest ones! Thereās a saying -āchhoti mirch, bada jhal’ -which literally means āsmall chillies are the spiciestā but more than that āgood things come in small packagesā describing a small person who seems harmless at first glance but delivers a big punch! That was our Aunty Doreen, forever linked in my memory with her signature culinary style.
She was always on her feet, āDiscoveringā where you would get the best fish or meat at local markets wherever she went. She once told me she wanted to visit the fish and meat market here in Patna, and I hadn’t even been there myself! I was proud to introduce her as my āMausiā (which would be what everyone would understand was our relationship) when I took her around to introduce her in our school and office. She was a bundle of energy and one look at her would tell you that she was a āWoman of the Worldā.
To our family, Aunty Doreen was always, always, āDependableā. She did everything right for her family, everything that she could doā¦go to any lengthsā¦and all of us knew- we could depend on her to get the job done. We just needed to ask and it would be done-no strings attached and no holds barred.
She was a bundle of energy, a force of nature, and a blessing in our lives.
We miss her deeply. We love her always. We remember her forever.
