elevated iS4Ua It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Elena Calarco on February 23rd, 2021 at the age of 78. Beloved wife of Francesco Giordano and Pasquale Calarco. Loving mother to Gino (Adriana), Diana (Robert) and Frank. Loving stepmother to Rocco (Michelle), Antonette (Dean), and Paula (Tony). Proud grandmother to Frankie (Katie), Gino (Sara), Alessandra, Irena, Cassandra (Stuart), Celina, Mario, Peter, Elena, and Giana. Step grandmother to Christian, Alessia, Justin, Katrina and Eric. Great grandmother to Liam, Isaiah, Ben, Alessia, Anthony, Nicholas, Jackson, Robbie, and Grayson. Elena will always be remembered by her sister Luisa and brother Peter. She is reunited in Heaven with her siblings Dante and Aldo.
elevated iS4Ua Elena will always be remembered for her infectious laugh and warm heart. Not only is she a great mother, sister, and wife, but above all else, she is the greatest Nonna. There is nothing her family and grandchildren will miss more than her fresh sauce or those big pinches on the cheek. She will continue to hold a big place in all our hearts as she watches over us every day. Nonna, we can picture you now, playing bingo, hitting jackpot on the penny slots, and beating everyone in scopa. Heaven has gained another beautiful angel. Until we meet again, we love you.

The reality has not yet set in for me that I have lost my beloved “Comare Lena.” As the devoted cousin of my mother and father, Emma and Vincenzo Frammartino, she was chosen by them to be my godmother – a role she fulfilled with passion and commitment throughout my life, exemplified especially by her steady stream of family visits.
On the most special of occasions, as well as the most ordinary days, she would appear, often unexpectedly, in our doorway – her face aglow with a spirited smile, emitting a bellowing laugh that would make one’s ears ring! Especially during the years when she lived just down the street from us on Drewry Ave, the Frammartino family and the Giordano family would get together practically every night. It was either at our place or theirs that the espresso cups would be spread on the kitchen table, among the playing cards; and whenever she yelled out: “Briscola!” the entire neighbourhood would surely have heard her. In the winter, she always helped us with our sausage-making sessions, and at the end of summer, our families would gather together to make bushels, and bushels, and bushels of tomato sauce.
Her generosity was boundless, especially in her gift-giving rituals. She never neglected my birthday as a child. At Easter she would deliver the fanciest Easter eggs, made of authentic Italian chocolate, accompanied by an extra tight hug (that always left me breathless for a while!). The brief loss of oxygen, however, was well-rewarded with those massive cuculi she would slap on our table – my favorite of all her expertly baked, traditional Calabrese confections. Her Christmas gift was always the biggest one under the tree, and artfully wrapped in the shiniest paper – yet it too paled in comparison with the tasty treats she would prepare with my mother at the beginning of every holiday season. Much missed are her “out of this world” turdilli, taralli, fresine, ginetti, scallille, cicitelli, etc.! She had a knack for baking and a knack for taking joy in living that is impossible to imitate.
I have learned many things in my years, but I will never learn to laugh at life the way my Comare Lena did – a necessary skill for both survival and fulfillment in this perplexing world.
When the Giordano family moved away from Drewry, we missed them profoundly, but the visits still persisted regularly, until my mother’s illness and eventual death, and my move to Nova Scotia. After twenty two years, I saw my Comare Lena again at my father’s funeral, a year and a half ago. I was moved beyond words, to be in her suffocating, affectionate embrace again. I am so grateful I was able to see her on that occasion – as it was the last. My Comare Lena’s passing is not only the end of a life, but the end of an era in my family’s history.
To my cousins, Gino (Adriana), Diana (Robert) and Frank, we extend our deepest and sincerest condolences for your loss.
Zia Elena today we lay you to sleep with all your other angels!
You were one of a kind we all share many amazing memories with you!
Your love for family, food, baking , playing scopa, bingo and the casino.

I was so sorry to hear about Zia Elena.
She was one of the first people in the family I met that stood out in my mind.
I will always remember her laughing and dancing at weddings and other social gatherings.
Later when I learned about some of the challenges in her life, I thought her positive outward spirit was even more inspirational.
