Obituary

elevated HC5z5 It is with heavy hearts and cherished memories that we announce the passing of Emilia D’Souza. Emilia, educator, and nurse passed away surrounded by loved ones in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada on May 31st, 2022. This petite but mighty lady of quiet determination is now at rest in the hands of our Lord. 

elevated HC5z5 Emilia was born in Navelim, Goa, India to Camillo Lawrence and Rosalina Manuelina Fernandes and had two sisters Gracie (Lucas) Pereira and Felecidade (Tony) Pereira. In 1944 she became the first person in her family to obtain a higher education certificate by completing her nursing diploma and she started her career in Bombay, India. She married Lawrence, the love of her life, raised her family, and in 1955 relocated from Bombay to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, East Africa, where she tutored students after school.  

elevated HC5z5 Upon moving to Toronto, Canada in 1974, she proudly embarked upon her over 25 years of service as a nurse aide at Extendicare. She dedicated the rest of her time to her family and friends, cooking wonderful meals, spending hours in her beautiful garden, managing her home and finances and demonstrating great spiritual devotion. 

elevated HC5z5 Emilia leaves behind her children Cellie (Tony) Gonsalves and Leo (Irene) D’Souza; daughters-in-law Olive (late Cassiano) D’Souza and Sarah (late Joe) D’Souza; grandchildren Mark (Ayesha), Charmaine (Wendell), Melissa, Andrea, Adam (Lucy), Alyssa, Eric, Lionel, and Shawn (Haruka); and great- grandchildren Darien, Sabrina, Tristan, and Claudia. She now returns to her Heavenly home to reunite with her parents, sisters, loving husband Lawrence (2008), and two sons, Cassiano (2016) and Joe (2019).  

elevated HC5z5 A celebration of Emilia’s life will take place at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church (5650 Mavis Rd. Mississauga, ON L5V 2N6) on Tuesday June 7th at 11:00am, followed by interment at Assumption Roman Catholic Cemetery (6933 Tomken Rd. Mississauga, ON L5T 1N4). The family requests that only those vaccinated against Covid-19 attend the funeral mass, and that all attendees wear masks for the duration of the funeral services.
