The family of Ernest “Ernie” Bengert announces his passing with both sorrow and joy, knowing that he is now reunited with his beloved wife, Florence, who predeceased him in January 2008.
Dad was born in Qu’Appelle, Saskatchewan, to Peter and Christine (Diewold) Bengert. He was the brother of Del (deceased) and Lillian Schreiner of Kamloops, British Columbia.
Raised on a Saskatchewan farm during the Depression, Dad met Mom in high school, and their courtship included many evenings spent dancing together. They married in 1950. After teaching in a one-room schoolhouse, Dad joined the Robert Simpson Company that same year. He and Mom raised their family in Regina until his transfer to Toronto in 1964.
Throughout his career, Dad advanced through the accounting and supervisory divisions of the company, ultimately becoming Vice President of Corporate Personnel in 1981. He retired in 1984 and enjoyed many happy years with Mom, volunteering at St. Benedict’s Church and watching his family grow.
After Mom’s passing, Dad devoted himself to his family, gardening, and maintaining the family home in Rexdale before moving to a retirement community in Mississauga. The family is most grateful to the staff of the Viva Retirement Community for welcoming Dad and becoming our eyes and ears as the years passed. They were essential to the care Dad needed as his health declined.
Dad is survived by his children, Bonita Porter, Darrell (Ann), Doug (Rossanna), Dean (Tina), and Drew (Lisa); his grandchildren, Jennifer DeCaria (Tony), Jeremy Porter, Amanda Hammond (Mark), James, step-grandchildren Stefanie and Vincent, Chris (Nicole), Luke, and Jake Bengert; and his great-grandchildren, Rowan, Hunter, Ben, Molly, Vanessa, Austin, and Rylee.
Our family extends heartfelt thanks to Dr. Amirthini Tharmalingam, the Renal Palliative Care Team at Credit Valley Hospital, and the staff at Dorothy Ley Hospice for their compassionate care during Dad’s final days.
In lieu of flowers, online donations to Dorothy Ley Hospice would be gratefully appreciated. Click here to donate.
The earth tilted off its axis for Dad when our dear mother passed. It can now restore itself for Mom and Dad are once again waltzing together.

Condolences to all the family. Didn’t get to really know your father but remember him well when he came to visit our dad, his brother Del. May he rest in peace now with his dear Florence😊
Hi Brad
Thank you for your message.
I remember your Dad fondly – I loved all the beautiful things he made in his retirement years.
Dad did diamond dots in his quiet years…maybe he and your Dad can make beautiful things together.
Uncle Ernie was that very special uncle and godfather who always took the time to send a message, make a phone call, or visit with me at the airport when I was passing through. With his wonderful humour and genuine care, he always made us feel connected, even when we were miles apart. Sending so much love to the whole family. Please know that your Saskatchewan family is sending love and hugs too. He will be deeply missed. ❤️
Thank you, Deanna.
You and your family were important to him.
Bonnie

Growing up with the Bengert boys on Waterbeach Crescent, I remember Mr. Bengert as a devoted father with a unique deadpan wit and humour. Wishing your family strength in the days ahead, and many happy memories of a life well-lived.
Uncle Ernie was so special to everyone and had a wonderful way of making each person feel valued and respected. He was especially kind to Keenan and me. We spent many days and nights with the family when our parents were busy, and those are memories I will always cherish. I remember how much we missed him when you moved to Ontario. He will always hold a special place in my heart, and I will remember him fondly for the warmth, kindness, and genuine care he showed to everyone around him.
Deepest sympathy to Bonnie and brothers on the loss of your father. Your parents were long time friends of Wendel and Alice Kuntz. They spoke often of your parents and such wonderful people they were .
Prayers,
Kevin Kuntz and brother and sisters in Regina
