Obituary
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Florence Marie MacLellan (née MacDonald) on July 28, 2026, surrounded by family.
A beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, she was defined by her kindness and unwavering faith. Her gentle spirit and compassion touched all who had the privilege of knowing her.
Florence was born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, and grew up in rural Grand Mira, Cape Breton. After graduating from Teachers College in Truro and beginning her teaching career close to home, she moved to Toronto as a young adult, where she met and married Vincent MacLellan, formerly of Inverness, Cape Breton. They later settled in Mississauga, where Florence taught at St. Thomas More Elementary School for more than two decades.
She is survived by her husband, Vincent MacLellan; daughters Jane Margaret Zingone (Daniel) and Lila MacLellan (Justin); and grandchildren Lucas, Thomas, and Nicholas (Maddy). She was a devoted sister to Jane Elizabeth Yates (Jerry), Martina Gillis (Francis), and Sylvia Gillis (David); a sister-in-law to Jean Gallant, Carol Smith, and Lila Beaton; and a dear cousin to Hughie Black (Lynn). She was also a cherished aunt to many nieces and nephews residing in Ontario, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, and British Columbia.
She was predeceased by her parents, Sylvester and Margaret Ann (Thomas); her aunt, Sadie Black; and her brothers-in-law, Alec MacLellan (Shirley) and Charlie MacLellan (Tanya).
Florence leaves behind a legacy of grace and generosity. Even after developing dementia, her essential qualities never faded. She regularly greeted her caregiver Stephanie, nurses, personal support workers and everyone around her with a warm smile, often accompanied by words of encouragement or praise. Her capacity to give to others and show love remained a gift until the end. She also continued to play the piano well into her eighties despite her illness.
elevated QETDz Her family is grateful to those who supported her in her final years, especially her caregiver Stephanie, who brightened Florence’s days and became an honorary family member, and the compassionate staff at Northridge Long-Term Care in Oakville.

My deepest condolences to the family of Florence MacLellan. I am a teacher with the DPCDSB and when I read the relay that was posted I wondered if she could be Mrs. MacLellan, my Grade 1 teacher. After looking at my class photo I am sure that she was – dark, curly hair at that time:) She was my teacher in 1978 at St. Thomas More School. I am very sorry for what she and the rest of the family must have dealt with when dementia set in…I have a family member dealing with it now. My thoughts and prayers go out to you all.
