Obituary
George M. Remedios, 79, passed away peacefully at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Toronto on June 13, 2026, after a stroke. He is survived by his sister Doreen and brother Robert (Connie) and nieces and nephews and his extended Tsui/Chui family. He was predeceased by his parents, Charlie and Lizaura Remedios and older brother, Sonny.
elevated viMbD George was a scholar and academic and loved everything about learning. He was educated by the La Salle Brothers and graduated from the prestigious Hong Kong University. He was a beloved teacher at Maryknoll Fathers’ School and a member of many local and global Groups.
elevated viMbD He arrived in Canada in the early 1970’s and attended the University of Toronto where he graduated with a Masters of Library Science degree. His professor gave him an A++ and said that in all his years of teaching at the University he has never ever given a student such a high grade. George worked in summer jobs in Manitoba and Saskatchewan before accepting a position as a Librarian in the University of New Brunswick in Fredericton.
elevated viMbD When he returned to Toronto in the1980’s, he worked as a Librarian for the Toronto District School Board until his retirement in 2003. George loved the arts and classical music and his passion was to attend all productions of the Canadian Opera Company, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, various Choirs and live performances from the NY Metropolitan Opera.

He was a scholar and a gentleman.
We miss him dearly and extend our most sincere condolences to his family.
Remembering Uncle George, a truly wise and gentle soul who blessed my life from the time I was a child. As a deeply respected elder in my life, I am so grateful for the beautiful memories we shared, and that special cassette tape will always remain a treasured keepsake of your kindness.

I was good friends with George for many years but hadn’t kept in touch over the past several years. I knew George through the University of New Brunswick Overseas Chinese Students Association of which he was a member for about seven years. We both shared a common interest in Cantonese which he spoke fluently and after he returned to Toronto, we kept in touch almost daily by email discussing the language and also sharing our recollections of Hong Kong where he grew up and which I started visiting in the late 60s.

George was more than a teacher — he was my brother, my guardian, and my lifelong friend. In the old days, we laughed together, sometimes made mischief, and even turned his home into a place of joy and fun. He visited my tiny family flat, shared meals with my parents, and became part of our household. When I left for education in Canada, George volunteered to be my guardian, guiding me with patience and care. His kindness, humor, and wisdom shaped my path and gave me strength. For over 57 years, we grew side by side, sharing life’s ups and downs, always with his steady presence. I miss him deeply, but I know he will rest in peace from now on. His love and guidance will remain with me, and his memory will live in my heart forever.
May his soul find eternal peace, and may his spirit continue to watch over those he cared for.
George was my teacher in Maryknoll Fathers’ School, teaching English Language and English Literature. He was much loved and respected by students. Much of us had become his friends.
I kept in touch with him during the first few years when he was in Toronto and the University of New Brunswick, but lost contact with each other for many, many years.
We met in Hong Kong in 2017 when he was invited to attend the dinner gathering celebrating Maryknoll Fathers’ School’s 60th anniversary. Despite the gap years, we met like old friends. I was amazed that he could speak fluent Cantonese and showed keen interest in learning Chinese on his own. Thereafter, I was among those that he approached for meaning of Chinese words/expressions. I was much flattered that he praised me for giving the best explanation.
When he visited Hong Kong again in 2019, we had a great time together, visiting interesting places, having gourmet Cantonese food and meeting friends.
His sudden passing away was heartbreaking. He will be much missed and will be in my heart always.

I was a room mate at St Joseph’s Health Center when George arrived in a bed across from me I had many conversations with his sister Doreen and told her about his health by phone when she couldn’t come to the hospital like George I too was a librarian retired from the Globe and Mail I left the hospital on June the 12th to begin my rehab and I’ve received an email from Doreen that George had passed during the night I was shocked I hope George has at last found peace and no pain and in the loving arms of his loving God
George was my Class Teacher teaching English Language and English Literature back in 1970 and 1971. He was handsome, sweet, patient, tolerant and kind with his English definitely superb and his Cantonese so fluent.
He was the only teacher during my secondary school to award me with a Certificate of Merit, my first and only merit certificate in English Composition. With his encouraging shot in the arm, I got a B and a C credit in both English Language and English Literature in my external School Cert Exam in 1971. Building a good foundation in English by George , it helps me a lot in my later years of academic and career pursuit !
George, a forever respectful man and teacher who had accomplished so much in life for himself and for the others. You got your eternal peace now. You spirit will no doubt be guiding us and you are always in our hearts ♥️

Georgie & I were neighbours in HK & childhood friends since he was 3 & I was 4. We were extremely close. We danced the hula together. We played house together. He was the father, I was the mother & Boy Boy was our son! We had many happy hours together. After I moved away from Toronto each time I went back to visit, Georgie & I would roam the streets of Spadina & have a meal together. Even though we lived far apart we kept in touch by email & phone. I feel such a profound sadness in his loss but content that he is now in the arms of our beloved Saviour. Rest in Peace my dear friend & May perpetual light shine upon you. I love you dearly.
I was in the same class as George in La Salle for two years. I left overseas to study after secondary school and did not see him again until about twenty years ago. Although I live in San Francisco, I visit Toronto often and had dinner with George along with other old classmates. The gatherings were always enjoyable and George was always so pleasant to be with. A pseudo athlete, I did not study much, and was always sweating and smelling. These probably kept us fairly distant at Maryknoll days, furthered by your migration to Canada.
However, our réunion in 2017 & 2019 closed all gaps. We walked side by side for 2 days, sharing your childhood and memory lanes, laughing away the MFS years.

Uncle George was an important part of our family, and his presence will be deeply missed.
My father, Patton, met him at university and later lived with him for several years. They not only established a lifelong friendship but also formed a strong brotherhood.
Uncle George witnessed many milestones in the Tsui/Chui family. Many of us were his students, and he always offered support and encouragement in our English studies. When my sister Cheryl and I were at university, he would bring us takeout every week, even on cold, snowy nights, before traveling a long way back home. He did this simply because he cared and wanted to make sure we were looked after and well fed.
George was also there for our graduations and weddings. He is truly an integral part of those memories, and his kindness and steady support will always remain with us.
We take comfort in knowing that George is now free of pain and resting in peace. He will always be loved, remembered, and honored.
George and I connected years ago through the Casa de Macau Toronto. He is the person responsible for all I know about Macanese culture and patuá. Though we hadn’t seen each other in person since the pandemic, since I moved to Nepal, we maintained a lively correspondence over the years. He was always asking me questions and sending me links and asking me if this was true. The last time we spoke he gave me extensive feedback on a new research project I was developing. I wish we could have had more time to debate and discuss these new ideas.
I will cherish all those moments we got to share together, from our early days commuting together from Toronto to the Casa Clubhouse for a mandatory first Thursday meal, to the wonderful meal we shared in Macau in 2019 with my grandmother and aunt at Dona Aida’s restaurant. The picture we took with Dona Aida, a couple years before she passed, and the conversation the three of us had in patuá, which George had patiently taught me for years, is one of my fondest memories.
Thank you George for all you taught me! I will never be able to repay the debt I owe you.
George was one of my favorite MFS teachers. He was fun and made the students felt comfortable around him. I kept in touch with him while I was studying in Canada but somehow we lost contact until I saw the photos in the MFS WhatsApp group when he came back HK for MFS 60th anniversary and we became facebook friends since.
George, I missed your encouraged words while I studied in Canada and the chitchat on facebook.

Uncle George was one of the kindest person I have ever known. Quoting his definition of ´uncle’ as someone who is not necessarily a relative by blood in Macanese society, he had extended his love to my cousins and I, who are in fact cousins and cousins of cousins of his godchild, Helen. I will miss talking to him including the emails with French corrections in red uppercase. Thank you for everything!
Today, with heavy heart I looked up to the sky and bid farewell to my favourite teacher of all times. It seems only yesterday Mr Remedios came to the class with a cassette and introduced us to the beautiful lyrics of ‘Sound of Silence’ by Simon & Garfunkel. This was a game changer for English lesson. He practically switched off that black and white tv and turned on a colour tv for us. We saw a whole new world out there. In his unique way he inspired and nourished a lot of young souls. I am forever grateful. We shall meet again someday.
A Life Well Lived: Remembering Our Dear Friend George
June 27, 2026 was a day of both sorrow and gratitude.
This morning Julie and I attended the funeral of our longtime friend and La Salle classmate, George R., at Assumption Cemetery. In the evening, we attended Saturday Mass at St. Agnes Tsao K Y Parish Church. It was a day filled with prayer, remembrance, and reflection.
During the visitation, George’s parish priest and many friends shared stories about his life. Again and again, one picture emerged. George was a simple man, gentle in nature, friendly to everyone he met, and never one to seek attention. He quietly touched the lives of many people.
George’s life journey was remarkable in its simplicity.
He studied at La Salle College, continued to the University of Hong Kong, and graduated with honours. He became a teacher at Maryknoll Secondary School, helping young people grow through education. After immigrating to Canada, he worked as a librarian, organizing books and making knowledge accessible to the community.
As I listened to the stories, one thought stayed with me.
George spent his entire life sharing knowledge.
First, he learned.
Then, he taught.
Finally, he cared for books so that countless others could continue learning.
His career was never about fame or wealth. It was about helping people discover ideas, develop themselves, and become better informed. Looking back, it seems that sharing knowledge was the quiet mission of his life.
Friends and students travelled from Hong Kong, Ottawa, different parts of Canada, and the United States to say their final goodbye. Their presence spoke more loudly than words. It reflected how deeply George was loved and respected.
As we grow older, we attend more funerals than weddings. Each farewell reminds us that life is precious and friendships should never be taken for granted. The monthly dim sum gatherings with our La Salle classmates, the birthday dinners, the laughter, and the conversations now carry even greater meaning. They are memories we continue to treasure.
Today we grieve the loss of a very good friend.
But we also celebrate a life well lived—a life marked by humility, kindness, friendship, and a lifelong commitment to sharing knowledge.

I have known George since we both worked at the TDSB where he was most helpful and caring. At that time George would come to my teenage son’s concerts, and later to our Traditional and Gregorian Chant Masses at St. Pats, where he became part of our Gregorian choir family: Christmas concerts, parties and dinners at the Chinese restaurants.
Soon we became good friends and George visited our home. During the covid time George and I phoned each other. I missed George. However, we met at the Koerner Hall – St. Matthews Passion in March 2026. George approached us – I was so happy to see him and hug him that night.
I am so sorry I could not attend my Friend’s funeral as I am still sick with a nasty bout of the flu- cold-cough. Our choir remembered and prayed for George and his family, during his last days and the day of the funeral.

I’m devastated as I’m just learning of his passing now. We met at the TDSB many years ago and become friends. We would have coffee & lunch together & had so many laughs. Later when he retired we stayed in touch and would often have dim sum together then go to bakery and buy coconut buns. We talked about music, theatre, travelling, politics(a lot) & just really enjoyed each other’s company. I wish I was notified of his passing, I would have liked to attend the visitation & funeral. I’m quite sadden by this news. My wishes for you my dear friend is to rest in peace. I will miss our talks & our lunch dates. I will truly miss you.
George was one of our favourite customers at Brentwood library. For years he kept staff company, reading the newspapers and using the library computers. He was always the last to leave the building. Our evening shifts always ended with “Good night George.” RIP.
George and I were students together at the University of Toronto and colleagues at the University of New Brunswick. He was a good friend and a fine person to work with.
