elevated 50Pbu Life Story

elevated 50Pbu On March 8th, 2022, after a lengthy battle with skin cancer, Mr. Giorgio Scimeca passed away peacefully at the age of 83. Gino, as he was known to most of his family and friends, was born on February 12th, 1939, in Termini Imerese, Sicily. As a young man, he served in the Italian Bersaglieri army corps. He then emigrated to Toronto to join his family. At the age of 27, Gino was fortunate to meet Providenza Speciale who would become his loving, devoted wife of 55 years. Gino made a career in the local supermarket business: he began at Loblaws; he then joined the family business, operating Longo’s, IGA, and Valleyview Farms where he could frequently be found chatting with his customers. Gino was happiest when socializing with his family, many friends, compari, and neighbours. He also loved to tend his large garden with its bountiful fig tree in their home on Muir Drive in Scarborough. A few years ago, he and his wife moved into a condo to be near their daughter in Stouffville. Over the years, he greatly enjoyed his many trips up to Thunder Bay to visit his son’s family. Nonno Gino, as he was affectionately known to his grandchildren, enjoyed sitting around a table after a good meal, entertaining all with funny stories especially about his youth and his time in the army. But most of all, Gino was a man of faith and a devout Catholic. During the difficult days of his illness, his faith and daily prayers provided him with great comfort and strength.

Gino was predeceased by his parents, Antonino & Giuseppina; his in-laws, Agostino & Salvatora Speciale; his brother, Calogero; his sisters, Giuseppa (Antonino Cira) and Maria  (Antonino Di Maria); and his brothers-in-law, Joe Quattrocchi and Anthony Speciale.

He is survived by his wife, Providenza; his children, Anthony (Julia Nola), Steve (Laura Mirabelli), and Joselle (Robert Morelli); and his grandchildren, Giorgio, Michael, Christian, Eric, Emma, Giorgio, Lorenzo, Sophia, and Juliana; his sister, Dora; his brother, Vincenzo (Francesca); and his sisters-in-law, Graziella, Josephine (Joe), and Louise. He also leaves behind numerous nephews, nieces, and cousins in Canada, USA, and Italy.

The family would like to thank the staff of the Palliative Care unit at Markham Stouffville Hospital for their care during his final days and to the staff of Sunnybrook Hospital for the excellent care throughout the years. A special thank you to his home care support staff.

Funeral services for Mr. Giorgio Scimeca will be held on Saturday, March 12th, 2022 at Holy Cross Catholic Funeral Home at 211 Langstaff Rd. E., Thornhill. Visitations begin at 10:00 with the funeral mass at 1:30pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Canadian Skin Cancer Foundation in Gino’s memory.
