We are saddened to announce the passing of Giovanna Scelsa (née Cecala) on July 25, 2026 in Ajax, Ontario, Canada at the age of 86 years.
Born in Caccamo, Palermo, Giovanna grew up surrounded by her 6 siblings and loving parents. She was a radiant and affectionate woman who yearned for a life full of happiness. After coming to Canada in 1963, she built a beautiful life with Vittorio, the love of her life and husband of 58 years.
She leaves behind her children, Gina (Ben) and Maria (Rico). She was a proud Nonna to Victoria, Andrea (Daniel), Alessia, Luca, and Isabella (Steven). She will also be missed by her brother Luigi (Lucy) and her many nieces and nephews.
Giovanna’s legacy is one of strength and kindness. She was a selfless woman who loved freely and generously, and she adored spending time with her family and friends.
In addition to being a skilled seamstress, Giovanna also had a passion for gardening. You could often find her among her plants, watering and caring for each one with unparalleled dedication. She also had a lifelong love for baking. From bread to cakes to cookies to pastries, she used her skills to express her love for others through these delicious foods.
Giovanna was the type of woman that inspired everyone she knew. She was witty, empathetic, kind, and funny. She will be forever remembered, loved, and missed by all of her family and friends.
We want to extend our heartfelt appreciation and thanks to the staff at Ajax Pickering Lakeridge Health and Hennick Humber Hospital, and to her caregiver Charmi for their dedicated care and support.
May she rest in peace.
