elevated mcc2w It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Giuseppe Sergi. God has called him into His Kingdom on August 6, 2026 at the age of 85.

elevated mcc2w He will be forever missed by his loving wife of 51 years, Marianna. Beloved father to his three children Vittoria (Michael), Vincenza (Gregorio) and Vincenzo. He will be forever held in the hearts of his cherished grandchildren, whom he adored: Nicholas, Anthony and Matthew. He is now reunited in God’s Kingdom with his parents Vittoria and Vincenzo and with his siblings Giuseppina and Antonio. His many nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, and cousins deeply mourn the loss of a kind and generous man.

elevated mcc2w Born in Fiumara, Reggio Calabria, during the Second World War, Giuseppe was only two years old when his father left to serve in the war. Though the war ended in 1945, his father remained a prisoner of war and was unable to return home until 1947, when Giuseppe was seven years old. The hardships and uncertainty of those early years would help shape him into the man he would later become. He was resilient and loyal, understood the value of sacrifice, the importance of family, the preciousness of life, and the power of education.

elevated mcc2w Growing up he helped his parents earn a living, especially his father who was a shepherd. He was known to rise before dawn and tend to his chores before going to school. He laboured in the mountains of Aspromonte to help his family endure the crushing poverty that many agrarian families of that time and place experienced. Giuseppe was a loyal son and helped his family any way he could, even though he desperately wanted to study. Though circumstances prevented him from pursuing the education he longed for, his thirst to learn never faded, it only grew stronger.  His lifelong passion for ancient literature, Latin, Greek philosophy, plays and poetry, history, Italian classical literature and poetry, and classical music never wavered.  Well into his old age, and up until very recently, he devoted many hours per day studying. Rarely was he without a pen, a book in hand, a notebook on his desk, and classical music playing. As a lifelong learner he also began to study Greek in later years and found great joy in practicing the language through grammar exercises and by listening to Greek radio broadcasts and music.

elevated mcc2w Giuseppe followed his beloved sister Giuseppina and brother Antonio to Canada in 1966 where he began to build a career as a TV and radio technician. Working at the forefront of this new technology, he continued to grow in this field while  attending English language school at night to become fluent. His commitment to education continued as he pursued correspondence courses in algebra and geometry.

elevated mcc2w He married his beloved Marianna in 1975 and brought her to Canada where together they built a loving home and raised their family.  Family was always at the center of Giuseppe’s life.  He found immense happiness being with his family and attending gatherings and celebrations. Though a quiet man, he took great pleasure and had immeasurable pride watching his loved ones come together, share a meal and make new memories. Proud of his Italian heritage, Giuseppe faithfully maintained many traditions, including tending a garden, making tomato sauce, and crushing grapes for wine each year. His grandchildren found great joy in spending time by his side and learning from him. He was a man who appreciated life’s simple pleasures and needed little to be content. He was grateful for all that God had given him.
