elevated 2LOgI  Obituary

elevated 2LOgI Gladys Pinto – devout Catholic, dedicated teacher and Universal Nana – passed away on 10 May 2023 at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto, Canada. She was two months shy of turning 99 years old.

elevated 2LOgI Born 23 July 1924 in Mangalore India, Maria Teresa Gladys Apolinaris Rego was the fourth of six children of John Rego and Laetitia Nazareth. She was also blessed with eight more siblings after her mother passed away and her father married Molly Saldanha. Nana Gladys loved to regale us with stories of her beloved father, saintly mother, playing 7-tiles with her siblings and joyous family trips to the ancestral coffee estate in Chikkamagaluru.

elevated 2LOgI On 02 July 1945, Gladys married Percival (Percy) Pinto in Mangalore. For the next forty-six years, they built a life for themselves in Delhi with their six children – Sheila, Berna, Freda, Alexis, Mario and David. She spent forty-four of those years as a teacher at Presentation Convent and a tutor in her community. After her retirement at 62, and Percy’s passing in 1991, she spent the majority of her sunset years in Canada, focusing her love and attention on her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Her years as a teacher prepared her perfectly for the role of homework monitor, spiritual councillor, and everyone’s favourite comfort blanket. She wrote beautifully handwritten letters and kept in touch with her friends and relations spread around the globe.

elevated 2LOgI She is survived by her six children, fourteen grandchildren, and thirteen great grandchildren.

elevated 2LOgI In the days before she passed, she was surrounded by family and friends, making it evident how universally loved our Universal Nana was.
