elevated hA1h4 It is with deep sorrow and heartfelt remembrance that we announce the passing of Gregory (Greg) Zbigniew Tomaszewski, a devoted father, loving husband, acclaimed architect, and a retired member of both the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) and the Ontario Association of Architects (OAA). Gregory passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 18th at Trillium Hospital in Mississauga, with his family by his side.

elevated hA1h4 Born in Dalno, Poland, Gregory was raised immersed in the rich traditions of his homeland. He traveled to Canada with his parents and two younger siblings on January 25, 1960, beginning a journey filled with hope and determination. His formative years in Chatham, Ontario, not only shaped his character but also ignited his lifelong passion for design and construction. It was during the building of the family home that he first discovered the spark for architecture—a calling that would define his future.

elevated hA1h4 Gregory’s academic journey led him to the University of Waterloo, where he pursued a degree in architecture and refined the skills that would distinguish his career. Throughout his life, he contributed to a rich array of landmark projects that enriched the Canadian architectural landscape. Some of the projects we wish to highlight include his work on Toronto Pearson International Airport Terminal 1, his contributions to the first full ministry-funded Catholic high school—Notre Dame—built for the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board in 1984, his involvement with the Susan Fennell Sportsplex in Brampton, and the reconstruction of the John A. Russell Building at the University of Manitoba, one of the most notable Modernist restorations in Canadian architectural history. These projects represent only a fraction of his lifelong dedication; over the years, he also worked on numerous municipal buildings such as schools and community centres, leaving an enduring impact on communities locally and across the country.

elevated hA1h4 Beyond these significant professional accomplishments, Gregory’s true legacy lies in his unwavering love for family. He is survived by his beloved wife, Diane; his loving children, Michael, and Jessica; he was a dear brother to Ursula and Andrew; and he is cherished by his extended family, including nieces Laura, Amanda, and Emily, as well as niece Kristina and nephew Christopher.

elevated hA1h4 From his son Michael’s perspective, Gregory was much more than an exceptional architect—he was a mentor and a coach. Whether on the baseball diamond or in everyday life, his passion for baseball and his heartfelt love for the Detroit Tigers created memories that will be treasured forever. Michael fondly recalls his father’s playful coaching, guidance, and the indelible lessons in perseverance, teamwork, and sportsmanship that continue to inspire him.

elevated hA1h4 From his daughter Jessica’s perspective, her memories of Gregory are rich with warmth and encouragement. He was always present at the sidelines—cheering her on at soccer games, figure skating practices, and science fairs alike. His steadfast support nurtured her creative spirit, urging her to explore design and painting from a young age. One of their cherished traditions was Toonie Tuesday—an afternoon marked by shared moments over KFC Kentucky Fried Chicken, a simple yet enduring celebration of love and family.

elevated hA1h4 Gregory’s legacy lives on—in the inspiring structures he helped create, in the countless cherished snapshots of his youthful sports days, and in the timeless guidance he imparted to his family. We love him, we will miss you, but you will never be forgotten for what you have done for us, for the family, and for those you have touched in your life. His contributions continue to serve as a lasting reminder of a life devoted to excellence, creativity, and love.
