elevated C2IrG April 10, 1928 ~ January 8, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our family’s matriarch, Lena Columb (nee) Flynn, on January 8, 2024. Those of you who knew and loved Lena will remember her zest for life, quick wit, sharp tongue and her relentless loyalty to family and friends. She was born in West Belfast, Northern Ireland to parents May and Willy. The eldest of 8 siblings (Joe, Flo, Willy, Bernadette, Mary, Jerry, Tommy and Rosie) she was the last surviving member of her siblings and leaves behind many nieces and nephews.Lena was a devoted wife of 52 years to Danny Columb who on July 14, 1960 was married in Toronto until his death in 2012. Together they had two sons Danny (Carmel) and Barry and six grandchildren Daniel (Christine), Ryan (Chelsea), Matthew, Sarah-Rose, Aidan and Conor and a great-grandson Miles. She was also blessed in life to have her angel Jenny (Jayson), who took care of her over the last twelve years like only a daughter would and became an integral part of her family. In addition to raising their family, they ran Toronto Underground Construction, where Lena demonstrated her business acumen and her ability to take on tough situations and persevere. She was a business woman before her time and with Danny’s work ethic and her business prowess, they made an incredible team. In addition to raising their boys and running the business, they were devoted to their Irish community, active in Gaelic games and Cultural societies. Having come to Canada in the early 1950’s, Lena understood the struggle of new immigrants, so she opened her home to family, friends, and sometimes strangers who landed on their doorstep seeking new opportunities that she knew Canada could deliver. Throughout her life she established lifelong friendships which continued from early childhood to present day.She is now reunited with her soulmate Danny. They will share many waltzes around the floor together in heaven. The family will be celebrating mass together in her honor. Forever in our hearts. Rest in peace. In Lieu of Flowers, in memory of Helena “Lena” Columb donations can be made out to the Alzheimer’s Society.

Lena had a heart of gold and was always so welcoming, with a big smile and an offer of food and drink when you came to her home. As a teenager, when Barry and I were(rarely) up to no good, she would give us the benefit of doubt and though skeptical would be understanding. In later years, she would often ask about my family and show genuine interest in how everyone was doing. She was a loving, caring person and we send our deepest condolences on your loss. We hope you can take comfort that she is at peace and know she is dancing again with Danny.
