elevated PdZt8 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Jean Francisca De Souza. She passed away peacefully at 8:30 am on May 23, 2026 at Ressam Gardens in Hamilton. She was surrounded by caring PSWs and her son, Peter and daughter-in-law, Dina.
elevated PdZt8 Jean was born on August 21, 1934 in Port of Spain, Trinidad and was the eldest child of the late Vibert and Vera De Freitas. She emigrated to Canada in 1958 with her husband, Compton (predeceased Jean) and sons Peter and David.
elevated PdZt8 Jean was a kind calm soul. She was blessed with excellent health and an incredible work ethic. She would work long hours at her job at Nu Mode Dress and come home to make dinner, care for her children, clean house and get up and do it all over again the next day like many other working Moms. At Nu Mode Dress, she worked her way from Secretary to Office Manager and then into Senior Management before retiring at 65 years of age.
elevated PdZt8 After retiring, she devoted a substantial amount of her time to the Prince of Peace parish’s events and prayer group where she developed many lasting friendships with the members of her prayer group. At 66, she decided to get her drivers’ license and after a few tries passed the exam and bought herself a new car.
elevated PdZt8 In her retirement years, Jean travelled extensively with the Church groups and her sister Lucita and husband Michael. As well, she enjoyed her trips to Barbados with sister-in-law Kay De Souza and predeceased cousin Theresa Vyfhuis. She enjoyed seeing and exploring new places.
elevated PdZt8 Jean was happiest when surrounded by her many family members and friends. Her house was often filled with family and friends for dinner at almost all special occasions and Holidays. She enjoyed bringing the family together. Jean was blessed with a large close knit loving family who were there to support her if she needed.
elevated PdZt8 Although she was rarely sick, dementia took hold of Jean in her mid 80’s and ultimately took her life at 91.
elevated PdZt8 Jean is survived by her children Peter (Dina), David (Noreen is deceased), her grandson Daniel, her sisters Lucita Peres (Michael), Dona Mohammed, Donna Mohipp (Rudy), and her predeceased brother Stephen De Freitas’s wife Mary. Jean also had another brother Vibert De Freitas and his wife Marie who are both deceased. She is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews in the DeSouza, DeFreitas and Peres’ families, cousins, and sister and brother-in-laws. She is also leaving many beloved friends in her church community.
elevated PdZt8 Jean has gone to join her husband Compton, her mom and dad, and many relatives and friends.
elevated PdZt8 Jean will be dearly missed by her family and friends. May God keep Jean in His loving care and light and may Jean be surrounded by love and joy.
elevated PdZt8 In honour of Jean, please give to the Alzheimer’s Society or Covenant House. Jean’s family would like to thank the Staff and PSWs at Ressam Gardens and the Bayshore PSWs and Nurses for the loving, kind, and compassionate care they gave Jean. Thank you for making Jean welcome, loved, and at home.
