elevated eIjdk Joao de Sa, affectionately known as “Mr. John,” passed away peacefully at the age of 91 on December 30, 2025. Born in Santa Luzia, São Roque, on the island of Pico in the Azores, he carried his Portuguese roots with pride throughout his entire life.

elevated eIjdk In 1970, alongside his beloved wife, he made the courageous decision to immigrate to Canada in search of a better future for their family, leaving behind his role in the Portuguese Coast Guard and the familiarity of home. In Canada, he worked initially at Douglas Aircraft Company before building a long and respected career with the Toronto Transit Commission, where he dedicated over 25 years as a bus maintenance worker. He took immense pride in his work, valuing job security, honesty, and providing for his family through perseverance. The opportunities he found through the TTC allowed him to build a comfortable life and enjoy the fruits of his labour.

elevated eIjdk Joao was known for his blue eyes, his infectious smile, curiosity, and ability to connect with people from all walks of life. He enjoyed gardening, reading the newspaper, completing word searches, playing dominoes and cards, and faithfully cheering for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Proud to be both Portuguese and Canadian, he took great interest in the lives and stories of both countries, staying deeply connected to their local news and events.

elevated eIjdk Above all, Joao was a devoted family man. His love for his family was steady and unconditional. He is survived by his loving wife Maria, whom he was married to for over 64 years. Loving father to Juvie (Frank), Ana (Thomas), and Eulalia. Proud Avõ to Kevin (Adriana), Daniel, and Kate. Adoring Visavô to Siena and Francesco.

elevated eIjdk His gentle spirit and unwavering kindness touched everyone around him and will live on in our memories. Rest in Peace Joao.
