elevated JYrTx It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John on October 5th, at age 84. Beloved husband of 58 years to Claire who passed in 2023, loving father to Lori, Ian, Tanya and Sean, father-in-law to Mike and Shelley, proud ‘Papa’ to Aidan, Dylan, Lily, Maya and Ava Jo, beloved brother to Diane and Ron, brother- in-law to Gerry and Ed, Emilio, Cathie, Doug and Carol, uncle to many, and inspirational friend, cousin, colleague and coach. Pre-deceased by his parents Ivy and Archibald Sherritt and siblings, Marjorie, Eileen, Gordon, Brenda and Ralph.

elevated JYrTx John grew up in Toronto on Beaconsfield Avenue and spent many happy summers with his cousins on the family homestead in Corbetton. He met and married the love of his life, Claire, and raised his family in North York. He was member of the Knights of Columbus. He had a career at Ontario Hydro that spanned more than three decades. John was also a dedicated volunteer and spent countless hours at Goulding Park Hockey Association as a convenor, coach and director. He was a Cubmaster with the Boy Scouts of Canada and a mentor to youth in the community. His final years were spent in Tiny, Ontario where his family enjoyed many unforgettable family vacations.

elevated JYrTx John was a gentle spirit who embodied love, strength, generosity and wisdom. It was no surprise that he played Santa every year to hundreds of children. Home was where his heart was and everyone called on him first when there was a crisis. His home and heart were always open and he was a father figure to many. Family was the most important word in his vocabulary. John loved hosting card parties and firing up the BBQ while listening to his favourite tunes. His family thought of him as King of the Grill. “Big, Bad, Bold and Old Rock and Roll Johnny” did a great Elvis impersonation and attended concerts, even into his final weeks. He loved California Sandwiches, Dairy Queen sundaes, onion rings and Thursday night music at Balm Beach. He was a Cleveland Browns and Toronto Maple Leafs fan. As a coach he leaves us with these words, “Always do your best, and never give up.” John’s smile lit up a room, his courage was inspiring and he will be dearly missed.
