JOŽEF NERAD

SEPTEMBER 14, 1934 – MAY 12, 2021

elevated JtTsT It is with deep sorrow and much love that we announce the death of Jožef Nerad, who, in the early morning hours of May 12, 2021, passed away peacefully after a bravely fought battle with cancer.

elevated JtTsT Jožef leaves behind his loving wife of 55 years, Terezija, and his children Sonja (Fredrick), Joseph, and Valerija (Neil), as well as his cherished granddaughter, Avery, all of whom will, every day of their lives, miss him tremendously but remember him lovingly.

elevated JtTsT Jožef was born in Črenšovci, Prekmurje, to parents Ivan and Magdalena. He was the third of eight children. He will be sadly missed by his siblings Ivan (Liza), Matija(Angela), Anton (Chantal), Angela (Jože), and Veronika, as well as countless cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. He is predeceased by his parents, his eldest sister Ana (Ciril) and youngest brother Franc. He will be missed by all his relatives and friends in Slovenija and Canada.

elevated JtTsT Upon completion of his compulsory military service, in the dead of night, he crossed the Mura River to escape to Austria in September 1956.  After six months in an Austrian refugee camp, he arrived in Canada in April of 1957, determined to make a new life for himself. He returned home in 1964, where he met his love and future wife, Terezija; they were wed in May of 1966. Jožef settled into family life and became a father with the birth of his first child, Sonja, followed by Joseph and Valerija.

elevated JtTsT Jožef was a very loyal man; he gave you all of his loyalty, and in return was given the same. He was an incredibly hard-working man, who at his retirement party, announced that he would no longer work twelve-hour shifts, instead he was cutting back to an 8 hour day; such was his work ethic. Upon arriving home every day, he would immediately retire to his beloved backyard and garden. Whether it was a result of his farming roots, or all of the time spent in his much-admired garden, he loved growing and eating his own fruits and vegetables… especially apples; he loved his apples. As well as being a wonderful husband and father, Jožef had many passions. He thrived on knowledge, and could always be found reading, not one, but multiple books at the same time. He loved using everything he knew, be it learned or innate, to create things; he was a tradesman who would turn his hand to anything. He worked hard, but also very much enjoyed his down time. A passionate walker, he spent many hours exploring his surroundings. Whether throwing them or attending, he loved a party, especially if there was dancing involved; a good polka was never lost on him. He loved nothing more than being surrounded by his family and friends, enjoying every moment with them, always a joke to tell and a smile to share.

elevated JtTsT Although he was small in stature, Jožef was a huge character; although quiet in voice, he could always make himself heard. Over the past year, although his body was weakening, his fight never did.  He resigned himself to his situation, but he never quit.  To the end, he gave it his all. His body may be gone, but his memory lives on. His innocent, boyish, loving smile is etched forever in our hearts.

elevated JtTsT A celebration of the life of Jožef will be planned at such a time when we can all come together to love, laugh, hug and remember.
