elevated CA9Z4 Obituary

elevated CA9Z4 God knew it was time in your 98th year to call you home. LL Cool Baba had an affinity for gold chains with big medallions, gusle, ganga, bećerac, kolo & Musical Youth’s “Pass the Dutchie”. She had an inexplicable love for those she leaves behind. For 70 years, she & her Luka lived for their family. Their children Marija Fridrich, Barica Zrakić (Marko) & Stjepan (Ana).  Loved by her grandchildren & their spouses Chris Fridrich (Dolores), Davor Zrakić (Marija), Lydia Torić (Anthony), Katarina Stahl (Robert), Laura Rogers (Jamie) & Vivian Farrugia (Anders).  Her adored great grandchildren Kristiana, Lukas, Igor, Isabella, Dominik, Julia, Erika, Katarina, Luke, Sienna & Dylan.

elevated CA9Z4 Born by the light of a single oil lamp in a humble stone home on the mountains of Brljica, Hercegovina to Jure Boras & Anica Ševa her volume worthy life began. The eldest followed by Pero, Jagoda, Janje leaving Stana the last holding the Boras branch. At the age of 15 when her father returned from Argentina, in a horse drawn carriage with their worldly possessions they set off to Babina Greda, Slavonija.  They prospered in the abundance of the golden land. At the end of the war, she and her beloved brother were swept up in the “Križni Put” walking from Vinkovci until heart wrenchingly forced to separate in Zagorije, never to see him again. She ended up in Vienna (Beć) with holes in her shoes, threadbare clothing watching the lights dim from the eyes of her fellow captives in the displaced camp. After 3 months,  she was carted onto a train headed to Russia.  By divine intervention she sleepily heard a recognized bell, seeing the Vinkovac station, she leapt, said a prayer to St Anthony & gunned it home.

Luka winked at her in Babina Greda and so started their life together  Working tirelessly hand building their first home, their story began. At this time, she taught herself to read, write & do arithmetic. These skills helped her secure their next home in Županja. In 1969, they set off to Toronto surrounded themselves with the Croatian & immigrant community. She lived to learn & communicated with our neighbours in Italian, Polish, Ukrainian & Greek. They shared home remedies, vegetables from one another’s gardens & fruit from their abundant trees.  Thanks to Days of our Lives & Sesame Street she taught herself to read, write & speak English. Baba taught us  to not take things so seriously, enjoy a raunchy joke, take time for yourself, immerse yourself in good music, drmeš out to reggae & always say yes to adventure. She truly believed that when one jumps you will always fall amongst the stars.

She lived to immerse herself with her adored great grandchildren. Her favourite thing to do was sneak them sugar cubes off her turska tray, share the Kiki from the pockets of her vest & delighted watching them dip their fingers in the glasses of rakija. She exploded with joy watching the play music (especially tambura), dance kolo & sing traditional Croatian songs. She told us countless times that she wasn’t perfect. Honestly, it didn’t matter she loved us as fiercely as we loved her. We will miss her grah, pogača and her baba sunny side up eggs as no one has mastered them like her. She leaves us with unforgettable memories &  a legacy that most dream of.  Eto draga naša baba, ovo je zaista zadnji puta -Laku Noć. A heartfelt thank you to the nurses & staff in the cardiac wing of Trillium, we won’t forget your patience, kindness or genuine care for our baba.
