elevated hoChn It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved Leopoldo Volpe. Peacefully, on January 2, 2023, at the age of 71, with his loving family by his side, Leo entered the gates of Heaven.
elevated hoChn Born on September 15, 1951 to loving parents Addolorata and the late Angelo Volpe. Beloved husband of 47 years to Carmela. Cherished father to Angelo (Amy), Michael (Leighann), Laura (Bill), Christopher (Siera) and Melissa (Aren). Adored Nonno to Malaina, William, Severino, Aren and Giacomo. Loving brother to Joseph (Patricia) and Paul (Marilyn). Dear son-in-law to Giuseppina and the late Angelo Lamanna and brother-in-law to Joseph and the late Angelo.

elevated hoChn Leo never hesitated to help anyone in need, whenever they needed it. He was an extremely dedicated, hard-working family man, who always put others before himself. He was a selfless man who will be remembered for his compassionate nature, his kindness, and warmth. He had an incredible strength and unforgettable sense of humour.
elevated hoChn Leo was a wonderful husband, incredible father and Nonno. He will be celebrated for profoundly touching the lives of all of those that were blessed to have known him.

I had the pleasure to teach and to coach him at Neil Mc Neil and then later when he played for Monteleone. He really lived by the school motto Fidelitas in Arduis both on the field and life in general. I am certain people were better for having crossed paths with him. The profound impact that Uncle Leo has had on my life is immeasurable. As the big brother of the three, he was the family patriarch who was always bringing our families together for a meal (and he was an amazing cook – his zucchini patties were my favourite)! So many weekends year round were spent together – all of the cousins together – making beautiful memories. Whether it was popping in one evening during the week for a coffee and cookies, or a big Sunday family dinner to mark a celebration, or drinking a Brown Cow on New Years – the memories are numerous and are remembered so fondly. He was probably the best Pictionary player ever and had such a quick wit with his jokes and one liners! As an adult now, I can only hope to emulate his family values with my own sons and nieces and nephews. Spending time with family is one of the biggest blessings in life, and I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to do so, largely thanks to him. Rest in Peace Uncle Leo – you will be lovingly remembered always!

I have so many wonderful childhood memories of Leo. As we grew older it was so nice to have our families spend time together with so many great meals and great conversations.
He was such a special man and with Carm they raised a beautiful loving family. He will be so dearly missed.

My brother Leo loved the game of soccer and played for most of his life. During Leo’s prime he played with Monteleone Soccer Club and was one of the stalworths in the midfield. He was often referred to as a Thoroughbred: strong, fast, agile, hot blooded, and relentless desire to never give up. Monteleone soccer club had some very successful teams during my brother’s tenure. Joe, my mom and I went to watch every game. Leo also had the pleasure of playing with Uncle Severino (probably everyone’s favorite uncle) who’s life was cut way too short (Feb.1974 only 33 yrs of age) Uncle Severino also had soccer in his veins. Leo and Uncle Severino were inseparable. Shortly after Uncle Severino’s tragic death Leo stepped away from the pitch
Because of the 6 year age gap between Leo and Joe & I we couldn’t play soccer together during our youth. In 1976 Leo and long time friend and teammate Sam Guarino got together to play with Termitana Soccer Club which played in the Metro League (later became the ISL Italian Soccer League) in the Westend. Leo and Sam were both player/coach and had the task of putting a competitive team together so they drafted Joe, myself, Gerry Volpe, Pat Colangelo and Sam’s brother Tom…just to name a few and we ended up winning the league. Unfortunately the very next year the club decided to go in a different direction and amalgamated with a Calabria in the T&D Premier division so the Termitana team was dismantled.
Fast forward 10 plus years after my playing days with Scarborough Azzurri were winding down, both my brothers Joe and Leo were already playing Sunday mornings with the Monteleone old timers in a very competitive league. Lot of great memories playing Sunday mornings but the most memorable was when we played in the annual Peterborough tournament. This particular year we made it to the final and played one of our league rivals Centennial Royals. I can remember like it was yesterday, coach John Lombardi has my brother Leo and myself playing beside each other in the midfield. Leo and I were in heaven. Leo was in his glory directing, distributing and having a great game. Eventhough he was having issues with his knee, it didn’t matter, he battled to the very end. We won the game 3-0 and we were champions. Luigi Perna scoring couple beautiful goals.
We will play together again one day in heaven

While our paths have not crossed much since our daughters, Alison and Melissa, displayed their soccer skills for York United, I have fond memories of many sideline and “en route” conversations with Leo. He indeed had a keen sense of humour, his love of family was obvious, and his passion for his work was also quite apparent. May fond memories sustain you through these difficult days and in the future, and please accept our sincere and heartfelt condolences for your loss.

Leopoldo volpe a man I called dad
Leo volpe’s life sadly ended January 2nd 2023 with his family by his side. He was a kind man, brilliant, successful, silly at times and loved whole heartily.
Leo was a family man, in his younger years he helped care for his brothers and mother. As he grew older he spent many years building a business and caring for his 5 beautiful children with his wife Carmela. Leo loved his children and they love him, it saddens me to know how much they are suffering with the loss of their father, their protector, and their hero.
He wasn’t much for phone conversations but would sit for hours at the table chatting and telling jokes with some good food and wine. He offered advice to those in need, was probably the only person in the world that can make instant coffee taste good, and often spoke about how much he hated weekends.
In the movie serendipity, the part at the end where Jonathan trager’s friend writes his obituary mentions that the greeks didn’t write obituaries they just asked one question; Did he have passion? The True Meaning of passion according to google is an intense desire for, or devotion to someone, activity or object. Leo volpe had passion and this is how I know that to be true.
In the first year he was faced with something that was very hard for him, having to close his business he worked so hard to build Fox five, and his accomplishments were astounding. when celebrating all his success, this strong, resilient man’s eyes filled with tears when reading cards from his loved ones about how proud they were of all his success. When given a plaque with his business name he then shed more tears. This was a true accomplishment for him and you could tell he achieved this with passion.
As the days continued, Leo was celebrated on his birthdays when given his card to read out loud would always have trouble reading the parts that said “the best dad ever” His children were definitely one of his most remarkable accomplishments. I know at that moment how much passion and love he had for them.
Now his truest passion was the way he looked at cake, his deep focus and sparkle that came to his eyes when he realized there was cake, (just kidding) although he loved his cake it wasn’t his true passion. His beautiful wife Carmela was.
Leo and Carmella were married April 26th 1975 and have celebrated 47+ years of marriage. Now we all know love stories, meet, fall in love, and live happily ever after, but this love story is more about the after.
I witnesses many years of them together, and to me, this is the stuff that should be in the movies. I witnessed Leo making his wife breakfast packing her lunch for work, driving her to the train, then starting his work day, making dinner, picking her up and then having a nice dinner together, she would tidy up, and on the weekends together they would prepare family dinner, he would drive the kids to were they needed to be and she would attend to the household chores.
This is passion, loving someone so much to do the small things for them, to carry each other when needed its about respecting one another. I often teased them cause I said I never see you hold hands or kiss they both would laugh, and Leo would respond with a joke, but now I know that when you love each other with that much passion its not just about those small things it’s more about the unspoken words and the acts of kindness and respect for one another that matter.
In many stories there is a hero, and in Leo’s story, the true hero is his wife Carmela.
Let’s talk about this extraordinary woman, shall we? Although the news to everyone that loved Leo was incredibly hard, and the tremendous amount of pain they all felt knowing what is later to come with this disease, It was hardest on her.
That news was crushing to know you are going to lose a piece of someone every day, the pain that would cause your loved ones would be heart-wenching. With this news and the unimaginable pain, she was feeling she still managed to be strong. She held her head high and did what she needed to do to ensure the time Leo had left he was loved and cared for.
As time went on he needed more and more care.
I watched as she gave him his meds, cut up his food, wiped his face and reminded him to drink his water.
The years went by it got harder and harder. It was harder for him to do simple daily tasks and you could tell she was exhausted.
This woman is the strongest woman I have ever met, and I know Leo would agree with me. When she helped him wipe his face or help with his shoes you could tell he was so grateful for her every time she did something for him he looked over at her. She spent years caring for him, I’m not sure how she did it.
When it was just too much and he needed more care the hardest decision had to be made, you could see her losing some of her strength and she knew it was time but she still didn’t want to. She realized then she was losing him for the second time, and this time it was a lot harder. Her person, her love, would no longer be home with her, would not be by her side in the morning, or when she went to bed. She once said this was one of the hardest parts, not being together in the moments that truly matter.
For Leo, when she told him it was time to go to the home, he cried, a piece of him returned, and he was aware of what was happening, he too was losing his love that day.
She still cared for him went to have lunch, and arranged birthday parties for him, although it wasn’t the same you could tell by the way they both looked at each other they were thankful for the time they still had together.
Even in his last days, I was told she never left his side, and he was looking at her.
This is true love, and my new love story, the love and compassion these two have for one another, when you have lost the ability to speak you can show your true admiration for someone just by looking into their eyes.
Today our hearts hurt, it hurts hers most. She lost a little bit of him every day, but her strength is what kept him strong, and his strong will to be here, gave her strength.
When I was about to post this I couldn’t, I didn’t know why so I left it for a few days then it came to me, It wasn’t completely finished and I couldn’t finish this story without witnessing the last few days.
As all stories have to come to an end, it was time to say goodbye, I watched as a family linked arms standing side by side as they said goodbye to their hero. The love pouring from this family’s hearts, crying and screaming the words “daddy” brought me to tears.
When laying him to rest, I witness a wife full of sadness, weeping uncontrollably, and his children in the most unimaginable pain, heartbroken, full of devastation, anger, and defeat wishing they had more time. I realized then that this was the part missing from his story the part where his passion carries on, through them, through his children, his legacy lives with them. The love and passion these children had for their father I honestly can’t put into words. His passion runs through their blood, combined with the strength of their mother making them unstoppable in this world.
To all that loved him remember Leo as a brilliant man, dedicated to his family, a man that loved to celebrate with good food and wine, An amazing father, who was there for his kids when they needed him, a wonderful grandfather, friend and brother. A son that stepped up to help his mother, a man who created a business from nothing, a man so courageous that fought to stay with his family as long as he could, and most importantly a man that lived life with passion.
