In Loving Memory of our father, a husband, a grandfather, a brother, and a legend.
It is with deep sorrow and immeasurable love that we announce the passing of our father, Luigi (Lou) D’Angela on June 20, 2025 at the age of 69. He was a man whose presence was larger than life, whose wisdom shaped us, and whose love was unconditional.
elevated GiI6o To the world, he was known by many titles: Lou, Louis, Louie, Mr. D, Zio, Nonno. But to us, he was simply Daddy. He was our compass, our protector, our constructive critic, and our most unwavering supporter.
elevated GiI6o Born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada to parents new to the country, Lou worked hard to obtain an education. Lou’s love for cars and fixing things led him to automotive mechanics. Wanting more, he went back to school to become a teacher, a career which brought him great joy and satisfaction for 36 years. In his retirement, he faced many health challenges, with cancer being his final battle.
elevated GiI6o He lived with strength, determination and a unique sense of humour. He taught us what it meant to stand tall, to speak truth, and to commit ourselves to people, our jobs, our passions. His knowledge was vast and he always had the answer. He was the kind of man who was always available to help everyone and anyone. His creations, morals, and teachings will live on in our hearts.
elevated GiI6o He is reunited in Heaven with his beloved parents, Giuseppe and Gelsomina. He leaves behind his beautiful wife Lina, children Christina, Giuseppe (Amanda), and Nicole (Vince); grandchildren Gabriella and Gianluigi; sister, Vera, and many valued extended family and friends. We can’t forget his best furry friend, Bella, who sat beside him through it all.
elevated GiI6o We grieve with gratitude for the years we were blessed to have him, and for the enduring love that remains.

Lou was an absolutely amazing human being. We taught together for many years at Thornhill Secondary School, and he was a treasured colleague to all, but perhaps more importantly, he was a teacher, role model, mentor, and father-figure to literally thousands of students who became better people for knowing him, even if they did not know it then. My sincerest condolences to Lou’s family and friends.

“Mr. D’Angela” was there for me during my teenage years at Thornhill Secondary and then as “Lou” throughout the milestones in my life. He was an incredible listener and always offered guidance and advice that helped centre and give me direction throughout my life.
He was an important person in my life and I wouldn’t be who or where I am today if not for his kindness, friendship, and mentorship. He will be greatly missed.

Lina and family. We grief with you at the loss of your husband, father and grandfather. It was obvious to see how much he was loved and touched so many lives. He will forever live in your hearts.
Memories of Lou pop in my head all the time. He was a great colleague whose smile and pocket protectors will be missed. He never seemed too busy to help me figure out my machines or dig out a loaner tool, even when he was in the middle of a lesson. He created & curated a welcoming environment for countless students who will undoubtedly remember him fondly for decades. His brand of kindness, compassion and humour will be missed by all, especially in the most mundane of staff meetings. I am sad that this great man’s time with us has passed. But I’m so glad I got to know him over 15 years. Love & respect Lou.

How do we say good bye to a friend of 48+ years – our deepest sympathy to a great loss in everyone lives he touched – some more than others. He was my wing man all these years as I was his – we were like the two old men in the Muppets in the balcony – Statler & Waldorf. Lou we will miss you.

I had the pleasure and honour of working with Lou at Thornhill Secondary School. It is with a heavy heart that I reflect on all the great times spent together and talking about Italy. He was not only a dedicated teacher who inspired countless students and colleagues alike, but also a loving father and a true friend to me and many others. Lou’s high moral standards and unwavering positivity set an example for all of us. I will always remember his distinctive laugh—a sound that brightened every room and brought comfort to those around him.

It is with a heavy heart that we have to say goodbye to our Cumpare Lou. We have known him for over 40 years. In that time you could always count on him to give you sage advice, but more importantly to make you laugh with his dry sense of humour. Lou had a slow and articulate speaking style that was only his. We will miss his voice, smile and solid wisdom.
Of his poker buddies he was the only one with a full set of hair and in its original colour. He started getting a little grey around the temples only after his diagnosis. His sickness was hard for all of us to accept because like his mother we wanted him to live up to a hundred. However Lou took the disease in stride and followed all the regiments in order to be there for Nicole’s wedding day. Miraculously he made it. How precious for us to see the love of a father for his baby daughter walk up the aisle with the biggest smile on his face. We were so proud of him and were happy to see that he was able to keep his promise. More importantly, Lou was able to show his wife and children how much he loved them by fighting the disease with all his might. Sadly, it is not a fight that we can always win.
Lou, as a teacher you taught your students how to live with dignity- to do their best, be trustworthy, be reliable and have integrity. As a father, you not only taught your children how to lead a good life, but also how to die with grace, acceptance and faith.
Fly with the angels our friend. Meet your parent s and loved one. Let them raise a glass with you because they are proud of you too.
Luigi you left a wonderful legacy that will not be forgotten. Until we meet again.

I only had the pleasure of teaching at TSS for two years but my fondest memories will always be of the great conversations that I had with Lou in the Auto Shop. It was my pleasure to hire Lou to teach Summer School as well because I always knew he would have the best interests of his students at heart.

A heart full of condolences to Lina and family. We are all saddened that Lou‘s life was shortened by the ugly “C” word.
Lou became an “almost daily” part of my life as a fellow technology educator. I, like so many, are grateful for Lou’s mentoring, support and friendship. His blending of infectious laughter while taking his teaching responsibilities seriously will not be forgotten.

Our deepest and most heartfelt condolences on the passing of our dear Compare Luigi.
Though we may not have been related by blood, we were undoubtedly family by choice — a bond built on respect, love, and shared moments that will live in our hearts forever.
Luigi and Lina welcomed us into their home with open arms, no matter the hour — especially on those late Friday nights that turned into unforgettable memories. We will always cherish the vacations we took together, the holidays we celebrated side by side, like this past New Year’s Eve, and every family gathering that felt complete with his presence.
One of our most cherished memories was sharing with Luigi, on New Year’s Eve 2010, the joyful news that we were expecting a child — our son Antonio-Joshua. It was a moment filled with emotion and love, and it’s one we’ll never forget.
We are especially grateful to have a phone recording from last year, where Lou left the warmest, most loving birthday wishes for Antonio-Joshua. His voice, his kindness, and the love he shared so freely will forever remain a part of us.
Rest in peace, dear Lou. You were truly one of a kind, and you will be missed more than words can say.
