elevated tXeJx After a year long battle with mesothelioma, our dear mother and nonna Maria Malta (nee Castano) has been reunited with the love of her life, our late father and nonno, Vito Giuseppe (Joe) Malta. She will be sadly missed by her sons Greg (Anne) and Frank (Kathy) and daughter Connie Malta-Vit (Dennis), her grandchildren Dr. Mikaela Malta (Daniel Berniker), Brady, Daniel (Katryna), Alycia (George) in London, England, Jessica (Brandon), Christian Vit (Carina), Julia Vit, her great grandsons Miles and Samuel Berniker , her sisters Nina Pirruccio and Rose Luciani (Gabriele) in Toronto, her sister Giuseppina Iemmello and her brother Joe Castano (Marietta) and sister-in-law Pina Macrina (Peppino) in Calabria, Italy, and her many nieces and nephews here in Toronto, in Italy and the United States. Our mother taught us many things but, above all, embraced us with her love while she was here with us. She was a woman deeply devoted to her faith and family. Her work ethic inspired us all. Our family’s immigration was re-routed from Switzerland to Toronto from Calabria Italy in 1966. She began working at McGregor Socks, where she was quickly promoted to supervisor status. In 1968 she started her career in the food preparation industry with Cara, Scarborough General Hospital and, for the past 35 years, she has been with Longo’s where she made many life-long friends and was admired by her many customers. Many thanks to her doctors and staff during this difficult journey, especially Doctors Anthony Lott and Madelaine Batez-Dougan at Sunnybrook, Doctors Penelope Bradbury and Bernard Cummings at Princess Margaret, CHC Team Dr. Peter Simkovitch and Nurses Ioulia (Julia), Olivia and PSW Lorraine and Nurse Jackie at Mackenzie Health Richmond Hill Palliative Care Unit. Due to the pandemic, a private family funeral will be held at St. Mary Immaculate Roman Catholic Parish in Richmond Hill following which she will be laid to rest at Holy Cross Cemetery ( Holy Family Mausoleum in Thornhill).

Dear Greg & Anne, Mikaela & Dan & Brady, and to all of the Malta family,
We are deeply sorry for the loss of your Mother and Nonna, and for her suffering these months. We remember her fondly. She was a good woman and your lives (and others) were blessed by her love and care. And you each blessed her life. So beautiful that she was here for the arrival of Samuel, as well as Miles. May your memories of her always be for a blessing, and may you find comfort among each other and with your circles of friends.
For those of us who knew Maria it is easy to see how our hearts are broken she was a wonderful lady who cared so much about her family and friends. Maria always had an open heart ,open door and for all the years Ive known her I will never forget that beautiful smile, she will be missed.

“Afterglow”
I’d like the memory of me
To be a happy one.
I’d like to leave an afterglow
Of smiles when life is done.
I’d like to leave an echo
Whispering softly down the ways,
Of happy times and laughing times
And bright and sunny days.
I’d like the tears of those who grieve,
To dry before the sun;
Of happy memories that I leave
– when life is done.

Dear Connie, Greg & Frank and all your families, please accept our deepest condolences, words cannot describe our neighbour Maria, she was not just a neighbour but felt like part of our family, she was present at most of our family occasions and her warm smile, courage & dedication will be missed, we will remember & pray for you Maria & we won’t forget your devoted spouse Joe. May God welcome you in his beautiful garden & may God bless you forever in heaven.
Nonna Maria (Mia)
My oldest memory of Nonna Mia is her and I in the garden, standing close to one another as I watched her pick all sorts of vegetables. Like every time I watched her in that garden, she would maneuver around with such grace and passion in her eyes.
Growing up I saw a selfless, strong and hard-working woman willing to do anything for her family. From a young age, these values became ingrained in me and have guided me in life.
Between Nonna and Nonno, they successfully built a better life for their children in Canada, and paved the way for generations to come. On behalf of all grandchildren, I can assuredly say that we are forever grateful for your sacrifices, lessons taught, continuous love, support (and food).
Nonna could never do no wrong, and always preached to do the right thing; if ever confronted by trouble, she would always tell us (her grandchildren) “Nonna say NO”.
Over the course of the past year, we developed a special type of bond. A head-strong Calabrese woman, Nonna’s battle with mesothelioma was not easy on her but our regular talks would reveal a light-hearted side, and a golden smile that would brighten my day. Nonna was a devout catholic, and her favourite Saint was Padre Pio for which they shared a love for prayer. Whenever I was sick, she would tell me “I pray to Padre Pio, everything will be OK”. Her last wish to me was that one day, we would together go see Padre Pio in Italy. One day, that day will come.
Nonna Mia was an amazing woman, who’s essence will forever be remembered in our hearts. May Nonna and Nonno now look down upon us from their garden in heaven.
Love,
Christian
Saddened on hearing the news of the passing of Maria. Our condolences to you the family as I am certain it is a difficult time for all.
Maria was very proud of her children and grandchildren and did not hide it.
She was a huge support to myself and my family on the death of my father, Saverio Montesano, five years ago. As well, when my son got married. Beautiful woman you are Maria it hurts that life as we know it did not allow us to see each other much, although you and mom, Maria Ranieri Montesano, kept in touch.
Bless you and may The Good Lord Let you Rest In Peace.
My sincere condolences to all Maria’s family.
She been more than a good and truly friend and always will be she will be sadly missed
May she Rest In Peace in God hands
