elevated xSlY2 Obituary
Born on October 1, 1933, in Cospicua Malta, to Spirio Micallef and Annie Micallef.
Marianne and her husband of 42 years, Sam Azzopardi, emigrated to Toronto, Canada when she was 25 years old and pregnant with their first child. Together, they built a new life and raised five children.
Her Catholic faith was a central part of her life. Marianne was an active member of her parish for 20 years, where she consistently volunteered her time in various ministries and church initiatives. She participated in multiple faith-based service trips focused on supporting underprivileged communities and sponsored numerous children internationally.
In addition, Marianne volunteered at several retirement homes, where she helped distribute communion and the word of God. But most importantly, she offered them companionship and conversation.
Throughout life’s challenges of surviving wartime Malta, emgrating to a new country, and raising five children, her faith remained a steady source of strength. She believed that most problems could be solved with prayer — or, in her kitchen, with a cup of tea.
Marianne is lovingly remembered by her five children: Anne (Robert), Don (Katherine), Tony (Rique), Martin (Melissa), and David, her 15 cherished grandchildren, and 7 great-grandchildren.
Her bond with her grandchildren was especially dear to her heart. She had a unique bond with each one — a love so evident that every year brought the spirited family debate: “Who does Nanna spend Christmas with this year?”
A trailblazer well ahead of her time, Marianne believed deeply in the strength and independence of women. She encouraged education and perseverance, always teaching by example what women can accomplish.
Marianne leaves behind a remarkable legacy of faith, family, service, and love. Her life was a testament of devotion to God, to her community, and above all, to her family. She will be profoundly missed and forever remembered in the prayers, traditions, and love she so carefully nurtured in all of us.
