Dragi Mario,
Počivao u miru Božijem. Iskreno saučešće cijeloj obitelji.
Ivana Svalina sa sinovima Kris i Luka.
Mario, my love. There aren’t even words to describe how grateful I was to be you’re life partner. You came into my life at a time when I was truly heartbroken, but you took those broken pieces and put them back together again. These nearly eight years with you have been the best times of my life. The way you loved me, supported me, laughed with me, cried with me. We had plans for our future, a future that has been taken from us. I’m really not sure what the rest of my life is going to look like now without you but I promise you this I will always be there for Sinisha and your parents. We were a family and that will never change. Thank you for loving my son and step son and the grandchildren. I will never forget all that you did for them. My sweet love, my best friend you will always be that until the day I take my last breath. Rest peace honey, until we meet again. Forever in my heart. I know you are watching over me now just like you always did just in a different way now.
Počivaj u miru Božjem dragi Mario. Iskrena sućut obitelji.
Jelena Mrčela s obitelji
I am so shocked to hear this sad news. My deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to Sinisha, Carrie, his parents, siblings and family. He always spoke so proudly of Sinisha. May you all find strength and courage and comfort at this very difficult time. And may he rest in eternal peace. I worked with Mario for many years and always remember his enthusiasm and willingness to help and his hearty laugh. He lent me his helmet for my M-license. Always helpful as ever. RIP Mario.
In Loving Memory of Mario Svalina
Where do I even begin?
Mario Svalina has been such a huge part of the Nevoljic family’s life.
The Nevoljic and Svalina families both moved to Brampton, Ontario around the same time in the early 80s, and from the very beginning, it felt like we were family.
In those early years, what we remember most was a talented, respectful young man who loved building LEGO projects and could already play the piano.
Mario truly lived his life to the fullest.
He had a brilliant mind and taught himself so much. He learned everything there was to know about computers, helping out at least 90% of the people he knew—often by phone or in person at their homes. He never asked for money. Instead, he’d happily accept kolbasa, cheese, ajvar with bread, pickles, a Coke, or sometimes pizza as his “payment.”
After mastering computers, Mario taught himself audio and video editing. From burning CDs to filming weddings, baptisms, and family events, he always found ways to capture memories. He also developed a love for photography and often took photos at the special occasions he was part of.
Mario’s passion for music was unmatched. From Duran Duran to Metallica, euro dance, Croatian music, and the Gipsy Kings—he loved it all. Having learned piano at a young age, he later picked up the guitar and even took dance lessons, like salsa and tango, because of his love for Latin music.
He was also an animal lover. In his younger years, he was known for having the best fish tanks around. Later came his first dog, Tiny, and eventually rabbits, hamsters, and more. If you ever needed a dog or cat sitter, Mario was always the first to volunteer.
Sports were another passion. He never missed a good Croatian football match, a Raptors game, or Joe Sakic leading the Colorado Avalanche to a Stanley Cup. He also loved playing street basketball with friends and family. Even though he’d say he didn’t have the height for it, he had a great shot.
Mario also found inspiration in some of his favorite actors—Tom Cruise, Jim Carrey, and Robert Downey Jr.
Tom Cruise especially had an impact. After watching Top Gun, Mario fell in love with planes and motorcycles. He bought tickets to Cruise’s movies weeks in advance, got his motorcycle license, and even began training for his private pilot’s license as part of the Brampton Flying Club. He often sported the “Tom Cruise look” with the jacket and sunglasses.
He loved Jim Carrey for the laughs and admired Robert Downey Jr. for his charm, talent, and style—something that resonated with Mario’s own love of technology, Legos, and flying.
But above all, Mario was family. He was like the big brother we needed in life.
From childhood hangouts to teenage adventures, Mario was there. He took us to movies, Croatian clubs and events, concerts at the CNE, car shows, air shows, Wasaga Beach, Collingwood, camping—you name it.
He was Kum Mario: my confirmation sponsor, godfather to my sister’s son, and I had the privilege of being his best man at his wedding.
I’ll never forget something Mario used to say to me: “I wish I had Alan’s height and looks.” I always took that as the highest compliment. But the truth is, I wished I could be like Mario. He was my hero growing up—even when I didn’t fully realize it.
He lived his life to the fullest, and I hope he left this world with no regrets.
Rest in peace, Mario Svalina. You will be deeply missed by so many.
With love,
The Nevoljic Family
Our deepest condolences to the Svalena family. Our prayers are with you; may Mario rest in peace.
