elevated lV8oQ A kind and gentle soul has made its way to Heaven.
elevated lV8oQ It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear Mother and Grandmother.
elevated lV8oQ In her 80th year at the Willowgrove Long Term Care residence in Ancaster, Ontario, Mom passed peacefully after a long journey with Alzheimer’s disease.
elevated lV8oQ Predeceased by the love of her life, John (2003), daughter of Marjorie and Melvin Watson, loving sister to Carol Steven (2000) and older brother Ken Watson (2020).
elevated lV8oQ Cherished and devoted mother and grandmother to Lynn (Kyle Balloch) their children, Elizabeth (Tim Henbrey), Jessica (Brandon Hamilton) and Gregory (Katie), Beverley Harden, her children, Bradley (Josie) and Valerie, John (Claudia) his son Davis and Christine (Mike Page) their children, Alana Easto (Martin), Scott (Kelly) and Danielle (Matt).
elevated lV8oQ Born in “York” Toronto, Ontario in 1940. Mom grew up in Parkdale where she met her sweetheart John, as a teen in the mid 1950’s. They married young and started their busy family. In the early 1970’s the family moved to Oakville. Mom was a tireless worker and an amazing typist being employed in secretarial positions. She had a long career at St. Mildred’s Lightbourn School in Oakville and then finished her working years at Glenn Arbour Academy in Burlington.
elevated lV8oQ She absolutely loved being around young people and they always loved seeing her pleasant, smiling face and enjoying her witty humour. Mom had an immense love of music, movies, live theater and popcorn! A meticulous dresser, she was beautiful, sweet, thoughtful and generous to a fault. She cared for and loved all her friends and family deeply. To further express this, you could always expect a card from the “card lady”. She will be dearly missed by her close friend Pat Brady.
elevated lV8oQ The family would like to thank the staff at Heritage Place (Burlington), Deerview Crossing (Hamilton). Deerview memory living and the Willowgrove where she received wonderful care during the last months of her life.
elevated lV8oQ In lieu of flowers, donations in Mom’s memory can be made to the Hamilton-Halton Alzheimer’s Society or the Huntington Society of Canada.
elevated lV8oQ Funeral Mass: Due to COVID 19 restrictions, there will be a private Funeral Mass and interment on Thursday, July 30, 2020 at 10:30 am

We only met her a few times but will remember her for her outgoing friendly personality.

I am so incredibly sorry to hear about Mrs. Hicks. She was, and will always be, a highlight of my years at St. Mildred’s.
She was sweet (but firm!) and was a much-needed steady presence during the period of mayhem that is being a teenage girl. I thought back to our daily chats long after graduating from SMLS.
Thank you for sharing your mother with us, we truly loved her.
I was a student at St.Mildreds and Mrs Hicks was such a wonderful part of our school community. Her smile and gentle demeanor was a daily reminder of the love she had for all of the girls at the school. I will remember her fondly. Best wishes to all of her family.
Mrs. Hicks was such a joy. I knew her from my 14 years at Saint Mildred’s and got to know her well by often being sent to the office for coming to school late. What might of felt like punishment in any other situation was always made better by little chat with her. I’ll always remember her immaculate handwriting and her kind and understanding smile. She will truly be missed. My deepest condolences to your family.

Mrs. Hicks, (always Mrs. Hicks to me) was one of the most kindest, caring women I had the pleasure of knowing. She had an incredible love for her family and friends.

For those of us who were long term Millies, Mrs. Hicks was a daily joy. In my high school years, not a day went by where I didn’t have a chat with her, she was truly a strong and loving presence in my life. Always smiling, joking and putting up with the constant shenanigans from those of us who loved her dearly. For many of us, our school years would not have been the same without her- she was the grandmother we all wanted and were lucky enough to have.

Darling Mrs. Hicks. I could not call her by any other name, even long after having graduated from SMLS. Throughout my years as a ‘lifer’ at the school, Mrs. Hicks brought smiles, laughs, and a knowing twinkle in her eye when she knew some shenanigans were afoot. I would often visit her during lunch hour for a chat and a chuckle – it was always such a pleasure to spend time with her, and I carry some of my most favourite memories from those moments. Always a pillar of support, Mrs. Hicks was so wonderfully giving of her kind, warm heart. She has left a mark on me that I have proudly carried since. I know I’m not alone in feeling that. Mrs. Hicks was one of the good ones, and the starry sky shines a little brighter now with her in it. She will be fondly remembered, always.

They loved you all from your first breath until their last breath. Marlene could speak of nothing more, as my friend, then her children and your families. She was a truly devoted Mom, and wife and friend and will be missed forever. Marlene would pray that we all could love and laugh, and forgive. Rest in deserving peace, friend.

I know your hearts are broken with the passing of your mom. I was blessed to have Marlene as a cousin. I will treasure all our fond memories we had together. Your mom was a devoted Catholic and it showed in her every day life. There is a special place in heaven and she is now at peace with the Lord.

My thoughts are with you during this difficult time and I am deeply saddened by the news of her passing. Your mother and grandmother will always be remembered with a smile on her face. Her kind, warm spirit is a memory I cherish from when I was a student at St. Mildred’s. Everyone loved a visit to Mrs. Hicks’ office, and she had such a positive impact on our lives. She was like a grandmother to all the girls – very loving, accepting and kind. She truly was the heart of our school community.

My condolences to my cousins and their families. Aunt Marlene was a great lady. I always appreciated the fact that we stayed in touch with each other. Although we are sad, we can be comforted in knowing that she is now happy and well.
Marlene shared the same birthday as my mom Melba Thompson, both wives of the Anchormen. They were the very, very best of friends. Sending sincere condolences, peace and love to the Hicks family during this difficult time.
