elevated KTgwb Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we said goodbye to Mary Lou who passed away peacefully at Oak Ridges Hospice in Port Perry. A shining light in all our lives, no one lit up a room like Mary Lou’s sparkling personality, bright eyes and big smile. Predeceased by her loving husband David who left us in 2014, and her parents Kenneth Charles and Mary Lourdes (nee Connolly). Loving mother to Katie (Cliff) and devoted Grammy to Charlie and Evy, her pride and joy. Loving sister to the late Elizabeth (Wayne) and survived by her sister and best friend Adrienne (Rick). Remembered by dearly beloved nieces Michelle (Doug), Lindsay (Doug), Heather (Michael) and Laura (Andrew) and many great-nieces and nephews.
elevated KTgwb Born in London, ON, her family moved to Toronto when she was young. Mary Lou attended Loretto Abbey Catholic High School where she met some of her lifelong friends. She worked at BELL for some years before meeting David at a party where they presumably did not much care for one another initially, but were mutually intrigued by one another’s sharp minds, and so continued a strong and loving relationship. They were married in 1969 and lived many years in North Toronto, on Bombay Avenue. It was here that Mary Lou established some strong friendships with neighbours who would become lifelong friendships.
elevated KTgwb In 1977 she was thrilled to welcome her daughter Katie. This was the greatest joy of her life, and she truly excelled in motherhood, always providing unparalleled love, support, guidance and advice. Her maternal love reached far further, as she established special bonds with the children of so many family and friends over the years, and even with Katie’s friends she gained through the years, all of whom she cared so deeply.
elevated KTgwb She volunteered for many years at the Armour Heights Community Centre establishing the recreational programming. She volunteered for many charities and community programs, such as the Canadian Cancer Society and Neighbourhood Watch. She had numerous jobs over the years, including Landman Realty, the Superior Court of Justice, the Ontario Family Court, and then after retirement began volunteering at North York General Hospital. In each of her volunteer and work roles, once again it was the people that Mary Lou met that she most enjoyed, developing strong bonds and connections with everyone she met.
elevated KTgwb Her days spent in Haliburton on West Lake at the cottage were among her most cherished times. Surrounded by family and friends, and with the wonderful cottage neighbours who she met on the Lake, she enjoyed many great years playing games, hosting parties, taking boat rides, and making memories that would last a lifetime for all who visited “Graze Inn”.
elevated KTgwb Always with a deeply keen interest in the people around her, she found great pleasure in her many relationships, new and old, forging strong bonds everywhere she went and in every walk of life. Known for her quick wit, sharp humour, and never without her “lips”, Mary Lou brought laughter and life into every room she entered. She was the moral compass of her family and friends, approaching life with unwavering grace and strength. Her warmth was infectious, and she had a gift for making lasting impressions on everyone she met. She leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and integrity — qualities that will continue to inspire those who knew and loved her. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to North York General Hospital- Palliative Unit or Oakridge’s Hospice

My deepest condolences
Just hung up the phone from talking with my sister, Susan, Mary Lou’s best friend from childhood (at least according to her). She has shed many tears over the loss of her great friend, but we spent lots of time reminiscing over precious memories of decades of a still vivid and hilarious past. Because of Susan, we were all lucky to know Mary Lou, and welcome her into our family in a reciprocal arrangement. She was such a special lady–always smiling, welcoming, and loving. To Katie and Cliff and children, Adrienne and Rick and children, and to Liz’s daughters, we offer our heartfelt condolences. How blessed you were to have enjoyed so many years of closeness and love with such an extraordinary and unforgettable woman. She will be remembered with fondness and missed by all.
With love and sincere sympathy, Mary Garry (Collett) and all the Garry clan.
Mary Lou was such a special lady, always enjoyed our talks. We lived in the same building for years and I will miss her smile and sense of humor. So sorry for your loss 😢. My deepest condolences to her family and friends, may her memories be a blessing. RIP Mary Lou 💜
