elevated jggtB August 29, 1940 – Reserve Mines, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia June 11, 2022 –  Mississauga, Ontario Mike passed peacefully, having been surrounded by his family for days. Loving husband to Barbara Charlotte MacCormack (Ryan). Father to Michael Sean (Sharon Mittmann) of Toronto and Catherine Lynn (Matthew Heslop) of Toronto. Proud grandfather to Miranda Grace and Meghan Ella. Predeceased by his mother, Gertrude Stack (MacCormack) of Sydney. Half-brother to Barbara MacDonald (Stack) of Sydney and Joan Winters (Stack) of Markham. Mike grew up in the small coal town of Reserve Mines in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Like many Maritimers, he immigrated to Ontario in 1959 in search of opportunity. In the summer of that year, he met his bride-to-be, Barbara, who had grown up just 5km away in Glace Bay. At a factory in Etobicoke, his first job was shoveling coal before he would rise to become plant superintendent over the next 24 years. At age 42 he bravely struck out on his own to run a commercial window coverings business for the next 3 decades. Growing up, he was “Mickey” to his friends and teammates in Cape Breton. To his son’s friends he was always “The Big Guy”; not for his size, but for his manner. Super-competitive in his pursuits – be it baseball, hockey or golf in his youth, or epic cribbage and ping pong battles in his later years – he never let an opponent’s error go unpunished. Mike was an avid reader of historical books and could recite his favourite poems by heart. At family gatherings, he could usually be caught debating domestic politics and global affairs in a scrum with the uncles. A patient and attentive coach of baseball and hockey, master tomato grower and pickler of beets, wonderful husband, father and Grandpa … Mike will be greatly missed and forever loved. A private family celebration of life will be held. In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to The Heart & Stroke Foundation of Canada.
