elevated xQGMh Maria Marinka Makovec nee Mlacnik. Born in the village of Luce, Slovenia on June 12, 1937; passed away peacefully at home in Toronto, Canada on September 29, 2022, in her 86th, year.
elevated xQGMh As one of five poetic and musical children born to Anton Mlacnik and Angela Nadlucnik, she was the sole member of her family to migrate to Canada in 1957 trekking over the Karavankas mountains. With an independent spirit, strong determination, and a dream, she built a future with her surviving husband of 65 years, Franjo Makovec. Both Marinka and Franjo independently fled their hometowns in the former Yugoslavia and first met sharing bread through a fence while in a refugee work camp in Klagenfurt, Austria.
elevated xQGMh Marinka was a hardworking, resourceful person who created a family home with an immaculate garden that was always filled with the laughter and play of her young children and their many friends. As a mother, she devoted numerous years of remarkable support to her predeceased daughter Irenca, who struggled with multiple sclerosis. Marinka’s spirit will continue to inspire her surviving children, Milan and Danica (and Paul), on their journey. She will forever be recognized in the faces of her grandchildren, Krysia, Kalila, Ayanna, and Julia, and her great-grandchildren, Cole and Maya.
elevated xQGMh With gratitude and love: to her family in Slovenia, especially her surviving sister Paula Robnik and predeceased brothers Tonce, Ivo, and Joze, and her many cousins, nephews, and nieces; and to all family and friends in Toronto and elsewhere.
elevated xQGMh Cremation in Toronto Canada followed by a journey back to Luce, Slovenia with her children, where a Catholic funeral mass will take place at the Church of St. Lawrence, followed by entombment. Online condolences are appreciated and we ask for prayers for all who suffer dementia and all who devote themselves to offering care and support to the elderly and infirm.

We met over 10 years ago when our children Ayanna and Aidan were speedskating together and our families formed a lasting and special friendship.
