elevated NZawT Obituary
elevated NZawT In Loving Memory
Orsola Puppi
February 6, 1930 – May 2, 2025
elevated NZawT Our wonderful Orsola (Nina) Puppi (née Perin), devoted mother, grandmother and ‘bisnonna’,
aunt, sister and friend, passed away gently in her home at the fine age of ninety-five.
elevated NZawT Nina was the daughter of ‘contadini’ (farmers) in Cordenons, Italy. She excelled in school and
aspired to higher education but instead, had to work in the fields and then in a paper factory. At fifteen, she met her future husband, Plinio, in a vineyard as their respective families harvested
the grapes for wine making. After five years of engagement, Orsola and Plinio were married, had three children and emigrated to Canada.
elevated NZawT The wife of a bricklaying contractor, Nina became devoted to her family and home whilst
cultivating her passion for flowers and sewing. As a young girl, she was a talented artist,
creating fine pencil portraits and landscapes using chiaro-scuro technique. She also read
extensively and wrote short stories and poetry in Italian. In 2012, Echi dell’ anima (Echoes of
the Soul), a collection of her poetry and prose was published and received recognition by Italian
Literary Societies. Her writings are reflections and anecdotes of life in small town Cordenons as
well as personal musings about the profound and often hidden meaning experienced in daily life.
elevated NZawT Nina was happiest in a garden. She could save even the most frail twig and see it flourish by her
tender care. It was her mission to plant the tiny seed and watch it grow and thrive in her
backyard greenhouse where blooms reigned supreme even in winter. She even appeared in her
‘giardino’ (flower garden) in a television interview on TeleLatino, sharing her green thumb
expertise.
elevated NZawT In her later years, Nina’s constant companion and conversation piece was her cat, Micio.
She lavished attention and care upon her pet who, by actually doing very little or nothing but
stare at her, gave her great happiness and added a sense of enthusiasm and purpose to her life.
Together, Nina and Plinio created a good life for their family on Gloucester Grove.
Nina ’s life was never dull as the mother of three: Isabella, Alan and Harvey (deceased), and later on, in their adult years, their partners added zest and joy to her life: Slavko, (Joan, deceased), Diana, and Jayne.
elevated NZawT And she was surrounded by her relatives who remained close to her till the end!
She had two older sisters, Rina, and Irma, and two younger brothers, Onorio and Attilio, who
lived nearby, as well as another older sister, Ada, who lived in Italy.
Nina is survived by Attilio (Tito) and many nieces and nephews in Canada and Italy.
Her legacy lives on in her grandchildren: Tanya, Sara, Adam (deceased), Alex (Christina), Aaron (Vanessa), Aiden, and Scott. Her great-grandchildren call her ’Nonna-bis’ (Grandma x 2): Gabriel, Milena, and Vaughn.
elevated NZawT Nina was graced with the friendship of many neighbours, especially Anna (‘la signora’) and
Carla, her closest friends. She was grateful to all who supported and loved her throughout the
days of her life.
elevated NZawT A special thanks to her precious, kind caregivers: Mary Jane, Raquel, Nelli and Mercy.
elevated NZawT Since Nina loved flowers with all her heart, a floral tribute would be appreciated,
or you may make a donation to the Alzheimer’s Society or to a charity of your choice.
elevated NZawT In keeping with her graceful disposition and vibrant style, we ask you to consider wearing your
favourite outfit instead of basic black mourning clothes in celebration of her wonderful, long life
to the Visitation on Friday (2:00 to 4:00 pm. and 6:00 to 8:00 pm.) and to the ceremony in the
Chapel on Saturday (9:00 am.)
My sincerest sympathies to the Puppi family. I have known Nina since the 1960s. She, and her family, always welcomed me into their home. A great lady who inspired me with her passion for her garden! May the Perpetual Light shine upon her. May she rest in peace.
