elevated dRQoy Obituary
elevated dRQoy Paul was born in British Hong Kong, to the loving care of Ip Chung Shu and Minnie Abbas.
elevated dRQoy At a tender age of 16, Paul ventured into the workforce as a private tutor, to simply put food on the table. Shortly after, his formal career began at a small Hong Kong publication house. His next employment was a pivotal moment when Paul was hired by a global trading company – Jebson. This was the time, when the country of China was ripped apart in total chaos during the Cultural Revolution. Without a tint of hesitation, Paul entered the fray of doing business with the Communist Chinese Government for the first time. As a junior employee, Paul quickly learned about the peculiar ways of selling German-made optical instruments to Chinese government officials.
elevated dRQoy Garnered with tremendous industry experience, Paul seized a new opportunity with an employment by a global German powerhouse – Bayer. For the next four decades, he had poured his heart and soul with unmatched commitment, from working as a junior clerk, to eventually catapulting at the top of the corporate ladder.
elevated dRQoy Paul had a magnetic and high-spirited ability to reach people with his stories, concerted by quick-witted puns. Shortly after his retirement, Paul emerged himself with the next adventure of becoming a school bus driver. A year later, he embarked on his second career as a court interpreter. For the next ten years, Paul had rendered a consistent display of integrity and commitment.
elevated dRQoy Amidst all his newfound interests, Paul took up the hobby of bread making and crafting his own classic Hong Kong milk tea recipe. He was also a charming guitarist throughout his life. With a few of his close friends, Paul put together a band called “The Harmonies”. For the next several years, the musical group had the delight to perform a wide selection of classical songs at various long-term care homes. Paul was survived by his loving wife Grace and his son Rudi, his daughter-in-law Alison and his two grandchildren Leonardo and Gracie.
elevated dRQoy Guests will be received at Holy Cross Catholic Funeral Home (211 Langstaff Rd. E., Thornhill) on Sunday, January 26, 2025, between 4 – 8 pm. Funeral Service at the Chapel of St. Joseph: Holy Cross Catholic Funeral Home will take place on Monday, January 27, 2025, at 9:00 am. Interment to follow at Christ the King Catholic Cemetery.
elevated dRQoy During Paul’s last days with us, we were extremely grateful for the unconditional care and commitment to service, provided by Markham Stouffville Hospital, Ontario’s in-home patient care professionals and Hospice Vaughan. Everyone, especially the volunteers involved, had worked together seamlessly and proactively, in order to provide whatever needed to ease Paul’s pain and stress. I am deeply saddened by the passing of Paul Ip. I first met him many years ago at the Scarborough court, and later, I often encountered him in Newmarket. Paul was always kind, approachable, and genuinely compassionate in his dedication to helping those in court. The last time we spoke was over the phone, I believe last summer, and I had no idea he was traveling in France at the time. I have since learned that he was a devout Catholic, and I take comfort in knowing he is now in a place of grace, free from pain and suffering, embraced by the love of God.
It has a big shock to me hearing about Paul’s passing.
Paul has always been a reliable Interpreter and colleague, a kind friend, a true gentleman.
He will be missed.
Paul told me an incident when he was a school bus driver in Markham . One of the schools he served was David Suzuki Public School. One afternoon when he walked into the school while waiting for the kids to get onto the bus, he was warmly greeted by teachers and staff: Wow ! Welcome Mr Suzuki! what a pleasure surprise to meet you in person! And they were not joking….
Paul Ip was a kind, gentle and wise member of our community. I am saddened to hear of his passing but remember the pleasant conversations we had. May he rest in peace.
Mr IP was a wonderful man who spent a number of years providing Cantonese and Mandarin interpretation services in the Ontario Court of Justice. He was a very kind and respectful man. He will be greatly missed.
I worked with Paul for years in the Newmarket court system. He was a fantastic court interpreter. He was also unfailingly professional, kind, and interesting to talk to. I particularly enjoyed our discussions about history including his experiences in China during the Cultural Revolution. He will be missed in the justice system but remembered for a long time as a positive presence. My best wishes to his family.
Dear Paul,
You were always a pleasure to speak to.
May you rest in peace in the arms of our creator.
Ave Fernandes, Durham Courthouse.
Paul Ip was a true professional and kind-hearted soul. His presence at the Newmarket courthouse was a source of respect and warmth, and his memory will forever live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
We are shocked and so saddened to read of Paul’s passing :(. As a Clerk/Reporter in Newmarket, myself, and many of my colleagues, had the pleasure of working with Paul in court, as an Interpreter. He was always so professional, and respectful, to everyone. If Paul was scheduled to attend court, we knew we could count on him appearing. His smile lit up the courtroom, and we will all miss him very much. Deepest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. May you rest in peace.
I have worked with Paul in the courts for many years. I will miss his laughter and his phone calls. He was an excellent interpreter, well respected by his colleagues and court staff. He was always so kind and patient. I will truly be missed by everyone.

I am so saddened to hear of Paul’s passing. I knew Paul as a court interpreter who assisted defendants in the Newmarket courthouse. He was a very professional, courteous, and kind man. Rest in Peace, Paul. My condolences to the family and friends of this lovely person, may his memory live on.
As one of the members of Harmonies, I am tremendously saddened by Paul’s passing. I will always treasure our fond memories of our singing at senior homes, numerous coffee breaks, lunch and dinner. Condolences to Grace and family.
Mr. Ip was a wonderful person who brought light to the courthouse. Many of us were devastated to hear about his passing. My. Ip was lovely to talk to during breaks and always had a smile on his face. Deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. He will be greatly missed.
I got to meet Paul from the very first day he landed in Canada although he and my wife were primary schoolmates. Paul was very talented in many capacities from milk tea brewing to guitar playing and singing, to technical journal writing, to being a court interpreter, and to be our band leader of the Harmony group. Paul was humorous and easy to work with. I enjoyed the time we sang together at many retirement homes. Paul, you will be greatly missed.
Paul was a bright presence in the Newmarket Courthouse. His sunny disposition was infectious and never failed to make me smile when I saw him. He will be dearly missed. Rest in peace.
Mr. Ip was a fixture of our courthouse for so many years. His joy, competence and professionalism offered a glimmer pleasure to the frantic and difficult days often seen within the building’s walls.
Having heard just a few of the incredible stories of Mr. Ip’s life, I always thought of him as a Forest-Gump-esque character. The kind of man who somehow always found himself at the centre of major international events and upheaval, documenting it all in his quiet and thorough manner.
He will be sorely missed and dearly remembered.
I’d like to extend my deepest condolences to the loved ones of Mr. Ip, who has left an irreplaceable void in the lives of those around him.
As the Interpreter Coordinator for Newmarket Courthouse, I am deeply shocked by the news of his passing. I find myself at a loss for words to convey the profound sadness I feel at the loss of such an extraordinary individual. It is difficult to express how honored I am to have had the opportunity to know him. Over the years, I have had the privilege of working alongside Mr. Ip. His work ethic was exemplary, characterized by reliability, diligence, enthusiasm, and a vibrant zest for life. Paul, your absence will be profoundly felt.
To Paul’s family, I offer my sincerest condolences during this difficult time. May you find comfort in the cherished memories you shared with him and may the love and support of family and friends help ease your grief.
May you rest in peace, dear friend.

I remember one of my first days working at Newmarket Courthouse I met Mr Ip. While he and I were both working, he would always look over at me or I to him and we would both ‘just smile’ at one another. He had a kind sole and a warm heart. I will miss his smiles that I saw weekly.
Rest in peace my friend
Every time Mr IP graced our court, his big smile lit up the room. It was impossible not to smile in return. For the next few minutes, you knew your day was going to be a little better. A true gentleman, he was kind, professional, and respected. Soft in tone, what he said was always clear, concise, and calm.
And what an impressive career prior to joining the court! Condolences to Mr. IP’s family as you honour a life so beautifully lived…
Words cannot express my deepest sorrow for the loss and the passing of our dearest old primary school friend Paul Ip. Paul was such an awesome person with a meaningful and remarkable life we would never forget. My heart aches for Paul’s family during this sad time. Please accept my sincere condolences. In heartfelt memories I will certainly miss Paul’s favorite and skillful milk tea 絲襪奶茶every time I am having milk tea.

We will miss you dearly Uncle Paul. Your legacy will live on.
Mr. Ip was a true gentleman. He will be sorely missed by everyone at the Newmarket courthouse. My deepest condolences to his many family members, friends and colleagues who are all sharing in this terrible loss. Rest in peace.
Rohan.
We are deeply saddened by the passing of Paul Ip. We first met Paul more than half a century ago. He was our movie cameraman at our wedding in 1972. Paul and I were co-workers in the Danish trading firm Jebsen & Co. He was the center of our entire team at the Canton Fair held twice yearly in Guangzhou. He held the important post of the paymaster of the company to distribute our daily expenses during the period of the Canton Fair.
I reconnected with Paul when his friends were giving him a celebration party at his 60th birthday in Hong Kong. Later he settled down in Toronto and we had regular music activities together. He was a guitar teacher at my music school at one time. He joined our church choir at the Blessed Trinity Parish. He was invited to join a music band at the same church. At one time he sang in a community choir where I was singing too. He also took part in music events which I organized for the social club of the condo we were living in.
Paul has a very amiable personality that enable him make friends easily. His talent in languages was unquestionable, being able to speak Cantonese, Mandarin, English and German fluently.
We shall miss Paul sorely and he will be remembered dearly in our hearts.
Simon and Jeanne
I am so terribly saddened to hear about the passing of Paul. He was such a positive and peaceful light at our otherwise stressful courthouse. He always had time for a kind word and an interesting chat. I would sometimes bring my daughters to the courthouse and he would be so engaged in speaking with them. He was sui generis and he will truly, deeply missed.
Our family will always remember him for being a friendly, kind and generous man. Our deepest condolences to Grace, Rudi and everyone that was close to him. May Paul rest in heavenly peace.

I had the distinct pleasure of working with Paul at the courthouse in Newmarket and it was an honour to have done so. I always called him Mr. Ip and whenever our paths crossed, he had such a warm greeting to give. In the two years I worked there, Paul was one of the people I most enjoyed working with.
Paul had so much kindness and care that it just drew people to him. He always had a warm smile for anyone he met, and I loved having time in the day to hear any of his stories. There was a comfort in Paul’s presence in the courthouse that will be irreplaceable. He was such a lovely man and he will be sorely missed.
Dear Paul,
We were deeply saddened to learn of your passing. Your warmth, humor, and kindness left a lasting impression on us. The care you showed our family and the guidance you gave our boys will always remain in our hearts. The books you sent, filled with your words, will be a treasured connection to you. While we mourn your loss, we find comfort in believing you are in a better place.
With heartfelt remembrance,
Cheyenne, Maria, and Family
I am extremely shocked upon receiving the news of Paul’s passing just now and am in a loss of words to express my feelings. I recall that we first met in the court in Barrie many years ago working together on a trial. He was not fully accredited in Cantonese yet at that time and when he found out that I was, he showed a great deal of respect towards me. Little did I know at that time that his wealth of knowledge in so many different fields ,,disciplines and languages were way beyond me.
As colleagues in the court as interpreters for many years, we somehow have lost touch recently likely due to the pandemic. I recall that on a number of occasions, I had called upon him to seek advice or consult on certain words. He was always very helpful without any hesitation.
My deepest condolences to Paul’s family.
The loss of Mr. Ip is resounding, as his presence was something felt, not said. His kindness and compassion for others was admirable. Wishing the family peace and comfort during this time.
I had the pleasure of working with Paul in Newmarket courts. He was always kind, professional and friendly. I regret not having the time to get to know him better. He will certainly be missed!
My deepest condolences to Paul’s family and friends.

important my close friend for more than four decades. I miss you – till we meet again Harry
I was shocked and deeply saddened by Paul’s untimely passing. I had the pleasure working with Paul as his partner interpreter in courts in many occasions and was not only impressed with his professionalism, dedication, attention to details, reliability, but also his charm and breath of interests and life experiences. I always enjoyed listening to his stories, last time I met him in the New Market courthouse, he was showing me pictures of his two beautiful grandchildren. He was such a proud and happy granddad. Rest in peace, Paul, I truly believe you are in a better place surrounded with love and peace. You will be missed!
Paul,
May you rest in peace!
Dear Ip Family,
We are deeply saddened by your loss of Paul; the world is truly poorer and less colorful. Paul was a brilliant communicator in at least three languages, a loyal friend and always unafraid and ready to face new challenges. I am grateful for having had the opportunity to share a bit of his path through Life. Rest in Peace, dear Friend.
As great as it was to work with Paul inside the courtroom during criminal trials it was the conversations outside the courtroom that made it such a pleasure to know him. Kind, always helpful and fascinating stories; that is how I remember him. What a loss to his friends and colleagues at the Newmarket Courthouse.
Dear Uncle Paul, It’s extremely sad to hear that you’ve left us. You were a role model, a gentleman and a very very wise man. You will be greatly missed.
It was music that connected me with Paul 9 years ago. It was truly my honour to have sung along with Paul and his volunteer singing group ‘Harmonies’. I used to tease him that he was David Suzuki 2.0. Paul was not only the band leader of Harmonies, he was the soul of it. His music brought love and joy to multiple retiring homes all over Toronto. His jokes and presence had lightened many hearts of the residents there. His passion, generosity and dedication to serve the community better were inspiring. Paul, may you rest in peace. You will be missed. Arrivederci My Friend. Amigos Para Siempre.
Dear Paul,
I am so glad I got to read your Land of Mei You. I am sad I won’t get to read its sequel.
You lived your life to the fullest and had such extraordinary experiences tied to the turbulent years of China’s recent history. Your job took you all over the globe but it was your sense of adventure and openness that made you venture out to travel and try out local cuisines. Listening to your firsthand storytelling was such a treat.
We had interpreted on so many trials as partners. I miss our rapport. I will miss the sense of accomplishment we felt when we all worked together at the Newmarket Courthouse assisting multiple matters and got everything on our lists done by the end of the day.
I am truly grateful to have known you. Rest in peace!
Paul, you’ve always had a positive look at life. I’ve enjoyed all the moments we shared together at work and after hours. You’ve had an amazing life experience. You will be missed. Rest in peace old friend.
It was a privilege to work with Mr. Ip at the Newmarket Courthouse. Sincere condolences to his family and friends. May he rest in peace in the arms of the Lord.
Cathy and I are deeply saddened by the passing of Paul. He was a remarkable person, and his kindness and presence touched so many lives, including ours. Please know that you are in our thoughts during this time of sorrow. To Grace, Rudi and Family, we hope you find comfort in the love and memories you shared with him, and we are here for you in any way we can. Grace, we always remember those Saturday afternoons we did our volunteer work at Bayview Extendicare Senior Care home with Paul and the Harmonies. God bless. May Paul rest in peace!
I’m so sorry to hear about the passing of Paul. May the special memories you made together help you through this difficult time,
I took for granted and thought Paul would be in our lives forever.
Somehow, his radiant compassion, journied experiences, and tempered wisdom made him a timless role model in my life. Yet despite being deservedly on a pedestal in my eyes, he welcomed me as a friend and made me feel valued.
Paul, I will miss breaking bread (mantou) and sharing a porterhouse over coal with you. I hope you and Ed will have already formed a band and having a blast.
I knew Paul as a fellow court-interpreter. A gentleman and scholar in the classic sense. Rest In Peace.
Dear Paul
希望你一路好走
好好安息
Rest in Peace, Uncle Paul.
It was an honour to have met you. Your humour and friendliness have left a deep impression though we met only a handful of times. We always look forward to receiving your annual email update. Even our daughters remember your visit to our home in Germany 7 years ago when they were 8 & 6! You will be dearly missed by all those who knew you. Auntie Grace, “節哀順變”
Paul, I still can’t believe you have left us. You managed to make everything so special, including my Bayer journey. Feel so blessed to have the chance to see you the day before your passing. RIP. Missing you Paul.
My deepest condolence to you Grace, Rudi and family.
I was shocked and saddened to hear of Paul’s passing. Not only was he an excellent court interpreter, but he was a kind , gentle and very interesting person to talk to, about all matters, legal and non- legal. He will truly be missed.
We got to know the family Ip shortly after their arrival in Montreal , joining Bayer Canada meant joining a closed knight circle of colleagues and friends . Ever since we kept in touch and enjoyed Paul and Grace company , shared the tales of their adventures and admired Paul vast range of interests . The moment spent in their company remain a cherished memory .The Frirdich family
Paul 哥,在這一刻,真的很想念你,感謝你在上海給我的照顧,多麼盼望能夠在那彼岸去跟你說一聲謝謝!
The passing of Mr. Ip will leave a very large void for all that had the pleasure of meeting and getting to know him. I had the pleasure of having him interpret in my courtroom and it was always a pleasure. His smile, kindness towards all and soft spoken word was definitely reassuring knowing that everything was under control when he was on a matter. Wishing his family and friends peace and comfort during this time.
It was always such a joy and privilege to make music and serve with Paul and the Harmonies in the senior homes. Paul’s passion for music and his genuine care for others shone through in every performance. He brought light and joy to the residents through his incredible talents, leaving behind cherished memories that will continue to inspire us all. He will be dearly missed.
My deepest condolence to Grace and family.
I have lost count of how many times Paul Ip would swoop in to court to save the day when we were in dire need of interpretation. It often seemed like he was in five places at once!
A warm, friendly, and unforgettable personality, Paul was a welcome sight wherever he went. His sheer presence would be enough to cheer everyone up no matter how the day was going.
How I wish there was more time, for the handful of conversations we shared it was obvious that he had a tremendous wealth of knowledge and storied experience behind him.
I can see him now, striding into court in his trademark suit and impeccable professionalism, spelling his name in a clear and gentle voice onto the record.
This is a terrible loss and Paul will be deeply missed. My condolences and best wishes to his family, friends and loved ones.
