Obituary

On March 24, 2021, Piedad Alicia Moreno Flores, loving wife and mother of five children, passed away at the age of 75.

Piedad was born June 28, 1945 in Azogues, Ecuador to Francisco Moreno and Alejandrina Flores. On December 14, 1962, she married Celso Gualberto Cuenca. They raised their children, Fernando (Zaida), Marcelo (Doris), Sandra (Gilmerth), Marcela (Sergei) and Byron (Maritza). Piedad is often described as the matriarch who had the courage and strength to start a new pathway with her family in Canada through her many sacrifices; she is the biblically described “Wife of Noble Character” from Proverbs 31:10 – 31.

Piedad was known for her elegance, quick wit, and strength of character; she was a madonna with unmatched beauty and yet humble enough to openly show her love for her family.  She had a passion for gardening and tended to her abundance of plants in and around her home. She also loved cooking and baking; the family’s favourite meals were papas con cuero, fanesca, and mote. Every time you came to visit, you knew you would be promptly seated at the kitchen table to snack on popcorn while the delicious meals were prepared. You would leave with a satisfied stomach from the food and a warm heart from her larger-than-life laughter. She loved music, making CDs for her grandchildren, and the occasional dance with her husband, sons and grandsons.

Piedad was preceded in death by her father, Francisco, her mother, Alejandrina, and her grandchild, Andres Fernando Cuenca Quevedo. She is survived by her husband, five children, thirteen grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

A private funeral service will be held at the Holy Cross Catholic Funeral Home, 211 Langstaff Rd E., Thornhill, ON L3T 3Z6 on Tuesday, March 30, 2021 at 1:30pm. Flowers may be sent to the funeral home.
