elevated vOeqG Rafael De Oliveira Fernandes, originally of Senharei, Arcos De Valdevez, Portugal transitioned peacefully on Friday morning August 14th, 2026 surrounded by his loving family. Born on August 3, 1933 in his native Minho to Maria De Oliveira and Jose Fernandes. He dedicated his life to the changing rhythm of the seasons and an unwavering love to the earth whole heartedly. Met his beloved Rosa and decided to change the trajectory of his life at the age of 24. In pursuit of fresh beginnings and life’s abundant opportunities he was one of the first from Continental Portugal immigrants to land in Nova Scotia in 1957 accompanied by fellow childhood friends. The following decade consisted of working within different trades including carpentry, agriculture and architectural sheet metal. Despite the trials and hardships of life he married on February 15, 1958 and finally reunited with his love Rosa Alves in May 1967.

elevated vOeqG Rafael lived his life devoted to his family, friends and work. He is survived by his wife Rosa and lifelong companion of 68 years, 4 children: Maria (Manuel), Isabela (Cesar), Tony (Teresa) and Joe (Manuela), 9 grandchildren: James (Amanda), Michael (Annamaria), Daniel (Jessica), Emmanuel (Yukita), Andrew, Brandon (Meaghan), Keana, Tony, Sabrina and 7 great-grandchildren: Luke, Olivia, Logan, Claudio, Maia, Roma and Viana.

elevated vOeqG A man of few words and a quiet subtle demeanour. Firm and serious in his ways however, when one managed to make him smile it was pure warmth and sunshine ear to ear. He enjoyed quiet moments and his homemade wine passing on these traditions to his children and took great pride in his Portuguese roots always making time to return to his native Portugal over the years. One can say he established himself amongst the family as the male version of a Coin Fairy; famous for dropping coins into his grandchildren’s pockets so they could enjoy a small treat. He modelled a life that instilled honour, respect and truth in his children When he pointed his finger you knew without doubt you were in some form of trouble … children and adults inclusive… but that quickly softened with a kiss to the cheek. A devoted fan to his Toronto Maple Leafs hockey team and diehard fan to his Portuguese Benfica soccer team one can attribute the family’s passion for these sports to him. He rarely missed a game !

elevated vOeqG Raf as some would call him was a simple man. Enjoyed the quietness of life’s moments. The legacy he leaves is one of integrity, resilience, love and simply being present. His loss as a husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, friend … has been profound touching every part of our lives. He served as a pillar for the Fernandes family enriching our lives and providing the instrumental tools of strength, wisdom and unconditional love. His life will continue to be celebrated by all who loved him.
