Obituary
Renier (Rene) Wilmelmus Brunott, aged 100 years, passed away peacefully on April 15, 2024 at Caressant Care Fergus. Rene was born in Amsterdam, Netherlands and became a mechanical technician and professional ice skater and luckily avoided being sent to Germany during WW2. He joined an ice skating show and toured the World. In 1954 he married Anna Catarina(Van der Weijden) (deceased 1991) and emigrated to Canada. They built their own home in Thornhill and raised three boys. Rene combined his machining and skating expertise to start a very successful figure skate sharpening business “Edges of Champions Ltd.” He sharpened skates for all levels from beginners to world champions. Rene was a passionate windsurfer and did so up to his 85th birthday. He was also an avid tennis player and built a tennis court in his backyard so that he could take on anyone willing to lose. Rene remarried in 2010 to Anita Pickett and they enjoyed many cruises whilst wintering in Florida. Rene is survived by his three sons, William, Jacob(Zeljka), Edward(Janet), grandson Ryan, brother Nicolas and sister Annie Debije in Holland, stepchildren Christopher Pickett(Anita), Kimberley Pickett(Justin), Christina Plat(Tom), step granddaughters Shayla and Gemma Pickett and step grandsons Zoran & Goran Zoranovic. Many thanks to the nurses and PSWs at the home for their loving care. Donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
I was so honoured to not only have my skates done by Rene but also a lifelong friendship with his son Jake. Making 100 was such a big milestone for Rene who beamed at his party. What a great 100 years
I remember Rene as a welcoming host during many gatherings at his house and cottage. I was close to his son Jake and was treated to boat rides, windsurfing and water skiing. Of course, whenever there was a gathering of friends or family at the cottage, he hosted the very memorable Croquet Tournaments!! RIP Rene. A long, active life well lived!
I first met Rene when I was 3, 57 years ago. My mom took me to get my first skate sharpening. Jake and I would play together out back at the tennis courts Rene and Jake’s mom Tina had, while Rene and my mom chatted about Rene and his amazing adventures. My dad was in the bakery business and would give Tina yeast to make her amazing baked breads, which Tina always supplied us with on each visit to get my skates sharpened. Needless to say my blades were always sharp and too perfection. Jake your dad was an amazing wonderful man and your mom was the perfect mom, together they were just the nicest couple I had met at the age of 3 and learned as I grew up, that their son Jake was just as wonderful as his dad, in business and as a friend. I am so glad we took our trip to Obertsdorf together to compete and accomplished a win for your dad to see. Sam and I are so glad we were there to celebrate your dad’s 90th and 100th birthday. Rene was a very special wonderful person and the Jake Apple didn’t fall far from the tree. RIP Rene you will be forever in our hearts.
The Black-Calleri and Calleri family.
Rene, a force of nature! Keep radiating your sunshine among us. Much love to you and family.
Beste familie
Van harte gecondoleerd met het overlijden van jullie vader en grootvader. Wel heel bijzonder dat onze om 100 is geworden. Misschien wel de eerste in de familie. Wij wensen jullie veel sterkte met dit verlies.
My sincere condolences, Jake, on the loss of your dad. He, and now you, have been sharpening my skates for decades. I remember going to the house and being in awe of the tennis court. Making 100 is amazing! He will live on in your memories.
