elevated XS0sg Obituary
In memory of Romano Zohil,
elevated XS0sg It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Romano Zohil, at the age of 91. Born in Tončaki, Žminj, Istra (Croatia) to Ivan and Marija Zohil, he was a beloved husband to Albina (née Slivar) – together for just shy of 67 years, a devoted father to Doriana (David) and Jason (Crystal), a proud and loving grandfather to Maggie and Cristina, survived by his siblings, Angelo (Lidia) and Milka, and an uncle, cousin, and friend to many, both in Canada and Croatia.
elevated XS0sg Romano’s Canadian journey began in 1964, when he bravely fled the former communist Yugoslavia, leaving behind everything familiar in pursuit of a better life and a future full of opportunity for his family. With Albina by his side, and their two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Doriana, in their arms, he arrived determined to build a new beginning rooted in hope, hard work, and love. Once new roots were planted and the future looked so much brighter, they were ecstatic to welcome their son, Jason, and the Zohil family was complete.
elevated XS0sg His cultural legacy continues to flourish today through Istrian Gardens and Istra Učka Canadian Club, where he proudly served as a founding member in 1979. He worked to build community and preserve the cherished traditions of his homeland for future generations.
elevated XS0sg Romano touched every life with his warm and spirited personality. He was hardworking and strong – the kind of man who never missed a day of work, yet beneath that strength was a joyful and playful soul who danced, sang, and laughed loudly and freely. He was strong when life demanded it, and gentle when love called for it.
elevated XS0sg Romano loved tending to his garden, a place where patience, care, and nurturing paid off in beautiful ways, which reflected who he was: driven, steady, and always giving more than he took. His favourite people, Maggie and Cristina, were his prized possessions. In his eyes, they could do no wrong. Their joy was his joy, and their love was his greatest gift.
elevated XS0sg He leaves behind a garden of love, planted over a lifetime. With deep roots, the garden will continue to grow in every season of our lives.
elevated XS0sg The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate team at Hospice Vaughan, especially Dr. Vincent Maida, Barbara Polowczyk, and Nurse Natalie, for the exceptional care and kindness shown to Romano. In his memory, donations may be made to Hospice Vaughan.
