Over the years we have heard our nonna express kind words and take action to generously reach out to strangers, friends and family in need. The kind words and actions are a testament to the wonderful way she lived her life and touched the lives of others. We will continue to celebrate her life by sharing her legacy of love and the nurturing she imprinted on our hearts.

Our nonna was born in Siculiana, Sicily in 1942 and came to Canada where she met the love of her life Biagio. For 61 years together they lived a simple life of working hard; providing opportunities for their family and others.Their devotion to each other was undeniable. Nonna took care of nonno and he took care of her, giving each other strength. As described by our nonno, she was a loving wife, an incredible woman who raised 3 beautiful daughters, and an admirable big sister who always showed unconditional love to everyone.

Our nonna had many passions. She was a seamstress at heart and she loved to sew. She pushed the pedal on her sewing machine as if it were a Ferrari and stitched with precision. She was our very own “Chanel” Designer.

Who can forget Nonna’s lunches with the finest, Sicilian Style spicy tomato sauce, homemade gnocchi or fettuccine and tasty meatballs, always served on her favourite dishes on a perfectly set table.

There was never a shortage of flour, sugar, Crisco or almonds at Nonna’s house. She baked the best traditional cookies and breads. Amaretti, Taralli, pizzelli, and her festive specialties cuccidati and easter bread shaped as baskets, bunnies or lambs decorated with the Italian Flag that was crocheted by our great grandmother.

There was no Peloton for Nonna. She got her workout meticulously cleaning her home from top to bottom. The floors gleamed, the mirrors sparkled and her kitchen was spotless. We often wondered if she had a magic cleaning wand. When she was finished with the inside, she would take real pleasure in working in the garden to grow beautiful flowers, vegetables and herbs that she proudly grew from seeds.

Nonna always welcomed everyone with open arms into her home. Her greatest love was her family. She proudly boasted about her grandsons and enjoyed every minute she had with us. Every occasion would be celebrated with her special touch and thoughtfulness. A special cup and placemat for your birthday, trays of your favourite cookies, personalized tabletop trinkets, or something sewn at the spur of the moment …all simple gestures to capture the moment and make you feel cherished.  Nonna loved having company and would get excited preparing to entertain. She managed and organized everything from shopping lists to table decor never missing a detail. Every meal was a feast and there was never a shortage of leftovers. But best of all, nonna loved sitting around the table enjoying the conversations and laughing. Our meals began with a prayer and finished with one of her entertaining toasts, “Facciamo un brindisi”. Her hospitality was more than generous and admired by all. Nonna enjoyed playing cards with the family. Who knew our quiet nonna, was a card shark at Sette Mezzo, Briscola and Scoppa. She would be thrilled to win the jackpot of 50 cents. For her it was all about spending time together and passing on traditions.

Nonna’s faith was incredibly strong and rooted in her life. It was her unwavering faith that guided her through many of the hardships she faced.

Nonna will be remembered for the respect she always showed others, her commitment to family love, her devotion to friends, her sense of humour and the strong values that guided her through life. Nonna leaves behind a tremendous footprint; one wrapped in love and nurturing. She upheld a profound understanding that in life we need to show kindness, patience, perseverance, and embrace every challenge with resilience and hope. She recognized that the simple things are the most extraordinary things…

Throughout her 79 years our nonna showed craftsmanship in threading, mending and stitching a beautiful life for herself, family and friends. Her artistry taught us to be good and always do the right thing. Nonna you will forever be cherished and held dear in our hearts. Noi ti amiamo per sempre …i tuoi tesori.
